[RBW] Re: Clem L: Color It Mine!

2023-09-18 Thread Kim H.
Congratulations, Kiley on your new 59cm Clem "L" in RBW Blue !

Looking forward to seeing pictures from you soon of your beautiful bike.

I have a lime olive green in the same size as yours. I would love to find a
59cm Clem "L" frameset in RBW Blue in trade some day. I am enjoying what I
have for now as my retirement bike, as well.

Well, will today’s threads ever stop delighting me? I am in raptures for
you, Kiley! I know you wanted orange, but I have that same blue Clem and
that paint is luscious. And, if you decide you simply must have orange,
then you can get it painted orange (several of your RivSisters have
custom-color Rivs) and be besotted with it.

If you can post photos and more stories about how you like the ride when it
all comes together, I would love to know. You’ve been waiting so long, and
it’s so good to see you get your retirement bike. I LOVE the L frame. Just
the best.

And I wanted a raspberry bike! So I also say make it happen for the yellow
or orange bike!

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this thread, start to finish. I was as
delighted as if it had been me who got the experience. How wonderful. But I
would not have been brave enough to be doing single track out there with
Riv People. You crashed twice? Nope, nope, nope. Put me back on the bike
path please and thank you.

I've gotten to ride with Grant a few times. The most memorable one was
when I was just stopping in for a couple small bits, and I was
contemplating a floor model 650B Atlantis. Grant walks up and:

GP: "Hey Bill"
BL: "Hi Grant"
GP: "We should go on a ride sometime"
BL: "I agree, that would be nice"
GP: ...
BL: ...
GP: "OK, grab a bike. Let's go!"

@ Takashi -

I love the Pacific Northwest here in Washington state with all of the
mountains and trees. It may rain eight or nine months out the year.
However, when the sun is out and not too hot, It is absolutely glorious.

I wanted to keep riding further on the Willapa Hills Trail, but I did not
want to go too far beyond my limits. To experience such a beautiful trail
was amazing.

I thank-you for your observation praise on my Clem.

I see that you have the same pedals as I do. Cool !

Have you considered buying some extension wings for your pedals ?
https://www.rivbike.com/products/mks-monarch-extension

They really do help.

Smiles to you.

 Hey All,

I wanted to share a special ride report from this past Saturday.

Originally, my wife and I planned to hop on BART from West Oakland and
travel to Walnut Creek to visit the Riv HQ, followed by a quick ride
 around
Shell Ridge. I've been to the showroom a handful of times to pick some
 odds
and ends, but my wife has never been.

She currently rides a Clem H in "Barf Green" as she calls it (ha!) that
I sourced for her from a fellow bay area Riv rider. It's an amazing bike,
but as she didn't pick it, it's never truly been *hers*. I was excited
for her to try out a few bikes and finally find her one true steed.

We arrived to find Grant in the showroom, helping another person find
their PBH size. Before long, my Wife and Grant were deep in conversation
about what type of bike she was looking for, and she hopped on a Platypus,
Homer (the new gold ones look amazing in person btw), Proto Charlie,
amongst others. She immediately fell in love with the Homer and was
 zipping
around the compound with a huge smile on her face. While she did that, I
nerded out with James, checking out his Homer and Atlantis.

Intermittently, Grant, James, and Riv Friend Dan, gushed about the
color of her frame, how unique the color was and how beautiful it was in
the light (all things I also thought when I scored the bike for her). For
context, my wife is obsessed with getting a yellow or orange bike, and
nothing else will please her :) Grant conceded to her that yes, one should
have a bike in a color that makes them love it, and so it in was in
friendly jest that for the rest of our time together Grant kept talking up
her "barf green" Clem. I thought it was hilarious.

After an hour or so, we said that we'd come back another day to hammer
out the details on a build, and that we were off to Shell Ridge to ride
some trails. I confessed that we'd never been out there before and James
let me take a photo of a map they had on hand to get there.

We set off, only to find both Grant (on his light blue Clem) and Dan
(on his army green Gus) waiting near the start of the trailhead!

They graciously offered to show us around (though were careful to give
us the option to get a few pointers and continue on with our date ride).
Obviously, we were more that elated to have Grant and Dan lead us on our
first ride in Riv's backyard. How cool is that??

So we were off! Grant and Dan tested our chops a bit through some light
trails, and eventually we came up to a fork in the road. Grant and Dan
 gave
each other a look and after a moment Grant said "well, you two look like
you can handle yourselves, so let's try some singletrack, it'll be fun!"

Full disclosure: my Wife and I are pretty avid cyclists, though we
spend most of our time on easier fire trails and pavement in the urban
jungle of Oakland. So... our experience on singletrack and trails in
general isn't the greatest. But when Grant says ride, you most certainly
follow. I also felt comfortable knowing we had them around. I must also
admit that I've never really taken my Clem L on this kind of terrain, so
there was a lot of learning to do.

What followed was an amazing jaunt around Shell Ridge. I fell at least
twice, but there was no shame to be had. Dan shared that on his first ride
with Grant in Shell Ridge, he fell off his bike and slid 50ft down the
 side
of a hill which scored some laughs all around.

As we went along, both Dan and Grant gave me some tips on how to ride
the terrain and by the second half I was having the time of my life. The
biggest thing I learned was to trust the long-wheel base, and pedal,
 pedal,
pedal. It took a bit of courage to do, but once I got the hang of it I was
amazed at how, yes, you really can pedal through those moments of doubt
 and
come away smiling. I'll never forget it. I was also in awe of how

5. Vintage used 1976 orange Eclipse Professional handlebar bag with a
rare Eclipse “Seat-Post Thing” made of cast aluminum. I recently machine

threading separation. Otherwise, it is very functional. I do not have the

9. One Used Silca 21” orange frame pump with leather washers – one new and
two used. $45.00, plus shipping.

10. One NOS Wolber 700c 36-hole M58 rim and one used Super Champion 700c
36-hole rim in good condition with side wall wear. I would like to sell

I had a longer, rambling, draft response on this topic that is better left
unread and may revisit to actually re-organize my thoughts at some point
and maybe add to the discussion but had to at least come back to add one
note: With all the mention of WIDE legs and '90's attire returning... as
another 90's (Gen. 'something or another' and class of '99!) member, I
can't help but imagine someone attempting a tuck/peg & fold or ankle
strapping on some of those ultra wide JNCO jeans for a ride. Thanks for
the much needed laughs! The kind with deep pockets could even carry a
pump, tube(s), toolkit, snacks, Hydroflasks, etc! Who needs racks or bags
or jersey pockets?!

I’m going to put on a fall outfit today, but I haven’t decided if it
will be my freshly-hemmed wide leg trousers yet. I shudder when I think of
trying to keep them out of the chainrings of my mermaid Platy. After years

Re: [RBW] Re: V-Brake Measurement Request

2023-09-18 Thread Coal Bee Rye Anne
Thank you, Will, for linking the archived v-brake page - I recall the
original page existing but forgot to where the archives moved (bookmark now
saved, thanks!) This helps a similar scenario on my Clem. I recall I
first tried to install a Nitto Mini Campee 32f at some point in the past
but that it was a no-go for the same reasons mentioned above: v-brake cable
crossing almost directly in front of the crown hole. The rack ended up on
a different build until recently and I decided to do another test with the
rack now in hand again. It seems I had only tried it with the cable going
OVER the rack support with that first install attempt. As it turns out,
moving my v-brake cable under the rack support has much less interference
once the rack is fully bolted onto the fork. The v-brake noodle boot now
just kind of rests against the underside of the rack support with very
little deflection of the cable itself.

During use on recent rides the boot did work its way over and out of
position from pressing against the rack tubing leaving direct cable/rack
contact but still very slight. Matching up my Tektro v-brakes from the
list linked by Will and a quick measurement on the bike I have one of the
110mm length Tektro models and moving to something a bit shorter (in the
95-100mm range) should clear just fine. As an interim (maybe even longer
term solution) I'm now considering just using a short piece of brake cable
housing and lashing it to the bottom of the rack support (with thread or
twine, etc.) to then guide the cable without wearing against the rack
tubing since the clearance really is minimal going under. Unless I could
get around to a brake swap with some Avid 1.0 v-brakes on one of my spouses
bikes that looks to have closer to 100mm arm length. Eliminating some
squeal on hers has been on the to-do list anyway so might be a no cost
win-win to just swap all the arms soon.

Just as I suspected, the Shimanos won’t work. BTW, forgot to mention
that my bike uses 700c wheels.

Definitely too stubborn to remove my beloved Nitto rack, but curious
enough to try the Tektros. Will post results when I get them in and
 attempt
 and install.

Many thanks for the responses and pics. Cheers,

[RBW] FS: Gravelking SS 650B x 43 Pair

2023-09-18 Thread Johnny Alien
Black sidewalls, tubeless ready, 650B x 43. The SS is the version between
the smooth guy and the SK guy. It is my favorite of the gravelkings because
it seems to be a master of all. I put these on my bike and rode a few miles
and then decided I wanted to try something new because I have these tires
on two other bikes. So I would call these 99.9% new. I could hold onto them
but I hate storing tires. *$50 shipped*

Man, I'd be interested -- to use it as a 12-28 10-speed -- but even with 11
cogs they leave out the all-important 16 t. Very odd. I was exerting a
