I'm 5ft and have a pbh of 68. I have a 47 Betty Foy w/26 in wheels. I
need the step through frame for stand over. I've never found a bike w/ a
horizontal top tube w/enough standover for me. But I don't know your
wife's pbh. My daughter has a 50 Betty w/650b and it's too big for me. If
you want to come to NC, she's welcome to try out my bike and my daughters
bike for size. I'm in Charlotte.

Re: [RBW] Re: RAGBRAI?

2024-01-24 Thread Pam Bikes
Leah, you could do any ride you want. There are rides in every state
including NC. Our cross the state ride is from the Mountains to the Coast
and will be 10/6-13. I've done it 3 times. Camping is the way to go b/c
there are not enough hotels and honestly they are motels since these are
small towns and not great. I plan to do it this year so maybe you can come
ride it w/me. The ride is smaller than RAGBRAI. It's about 800-1000
riders and a few Rivs. Logistics - fly into Charlotte then we can drop a
van at the end so when we're done, we drive back. Cycle NC puts on the
ride and registration includes moving your tent, luggage on the truck,
shower trucks and campsites. Lots of people do many of the state rides and
say the NC one is well organized. I would agree. The ride this year
starts in Spruce Pine and ends at Ocean Isle Beach. Charlotte is only
about 2 hrs from Spruce Pine. Come ride across NC w/me.

I had a 54cm Hunq a few years ago and foolishly sold it. Thanks.

[RBW] Re: B17 alternatives

2024-01-24 Thread Chris Halasz
I've enjoyed many a B17 Champion Special, and a few not, and only a few B17
standards.

NOTE: I'm six foot tall, 165lbs, with a 13cm sit bone width. I run a few
times a week and do a couple of 25 mile rides each week, and shorter rides
for errands, etc. Long way of saying I'm not real wide and there's not much
mass on me.

I've also got an Ideale Daniel Rebour in my stash, which is said to have
superior water resistance. Never tried the water resistance, though. It is
also very nice.

I never had good luck with the Berthouds. Like sitting on granite. Hard
hard hard. No break-in. Tried three different ones. Gave up. Ditto for the
Brooks C67 (the Cambium version of the B68). The C67 also had a very wide
nose, which did not work for me - I guess I've got developed adductors or
something.

I recently bought an LHT and have a more Albatross/Tosco-type upright
position on the bike. I tried a bunch of Brooks and Specialized and Ergon
saddles, all 155+mm width.

There is one that I settled on, that is really fantastic for me: The Ergon
Mountain SMC in a women's medium/large. I think it's about 160mm at its
widest, and weighs 300g, so maybe a half pound lighter than a B17, and to
me, just as nice. It was about $70. There's a picture on the Rivbike site
with what I think is the same saddle on Roman's Sequoia:

https://www.rivbike.com/blogs/news/romans-59cm-sequoia-86-5cm-pbh

A note about saddle width: leather saddles have those beautiful rivets. The
rivets, for me, reduce the functional width of a saddle. Here's a photo of
a 155mm saddle mated to a 220mm wide saddle. Their 65mm difference is
minimized by the rivets, and their functional width is similar:

Both those saddles (Brooks B68 and Ergon SR3-L) are available for purchase
if anyone's interested!

[RBW] Re: Seat lug crack

2024-01-24 Thread iamkeith
Where are you located, Logan? Maybe someone will know a builder or repair
service near you, that they can recommend.

It sure looks like a crack to me, and I too would guess that the most
likely cause was a too-small seat post. I also like Christian's idea: If
you're lucky, perhaps a small drill hole to stop it propogating further,
and then brazing the crack itself might suffice without a large area of
paint damage. Great that you caught it before it got worse.

Finding a good builder will be the first step. I wouldn't hesitate to ask
Rivendell if they have any ideas or experience. You're way beyond anything
that could be construed as a reasonable warranty period, so be clear that
you're not approaching it from a standpoint of expecting something or
pointing fingers. You're just asking for advice and brainstorming.

[RBW] FS: Nitto Deluxe/Tallux 120mm & Ritchey/Nitto 100mm stems

2024-01-24 Thread Paul M
The Nitto Tallux stem came off an early model Clem L that had seen very
little use. I sold the frameset but kept the components. 120mm reach with a
-17 degree drop but levels out once mounted. 225mm quill. 25.4 handlebar
clamp. Excellent clean condition with some very faint marks from
installation. $55 shipped

The Ritchey Force stem is made by Nitto from the early 90's. 100mm reach
with zero rise but will give ~6 degree rise once mounted. 26.0 handlebar
clamp. Excellent condition. $60 shipped.

More pictures if interested, just reach out off this site. Thanks, Paul

[RBW] Re: Seat lug crack

2024-01-24 Thread christian poppell
Amateur framebuilder here...

Id drill a hole to stop the propagation of the crack then TIG weld to fuse
the crack. grind smooth to finish. I would try that first before replacing
the whole seat lug.

"If my understanding of frame construction is correct, that also means the
top of the seat tube is cracked, since it extends through the seat lug and
is cut off even with the top of the lug."

Some seat lugs are like that, many lugs used in production have a shelf on
the inside where the seat tube would be cut at 90deg then inserted into the
lug. (image from torch and file
)

I believe that is how the lug is on the QB, I can check mine when i get
home and report back.

Are you at U Michigan? If so, there's Doug Fattic (Niles, MI) and Franklin
Frames (Newark, OH?) that are closeish. Doug is great, I don't have
experience with Franklin but have heard he is willing to take on odd jobs.

[RBW] Re: Seat lug crack

2024-01-24 Thread Jeremy Till
Replying not as a frame expert, but I did work as a mechanic for a while
and was often customers' first line of inquiry about frame issues. Take my
advice with a grain of salt. The only authoritative source of information
on this would be a framebuilder who has been able to inspect the frame in
person.

All that being said:
-I would agree that that looks like a cracked seat lug. If my understanding
of frame construction is correct, that also means the top of the seat tube
is cracked, since it extends through the seat lug and is cut off even with
the top of the lug.
-A crack there would be a big deal in that it would eventually cause the
frame to no longer be able to clamp the seatpost. The tension of tightening
the seatpost binder bolt would tend to expand the crack, and eventually the
seatpost would start to slip. Riding it in this condition would probably
accelerate the process.
-I'll let you evaluate what is an acceptable amount of danger for yourself,
given the failure mode I've described above.
-I would imagine that something like this could be repaired by a skilled
framebuilder, but the questions would be whether you could find one that
was willing to take on the work, and, depending on what they charged,
whether the repair would make sense financially. It's a tricky repair being
at the seat cluster joint, where four tubes come together, rather that at a
joint with only two tubes, or better yet in the middle of a single tube.
Given that the crack is also through the seat tube, a repair might
necessitate replacing that tube as well, although a framebuilder might be
able to cut it off somewhere in the middle of the tube and splice in a new
section to run through the seat lug. I don't know where you're located, but
as always, finding a local builder who could look at it would be ideal.

Good luck!

Re: [RBW] B17 alternatives

2024-01-24 Thread Ron Mc
Silly me, never considered there was an alternative to Brooks.
I'm backed up, with a couple stashed Select and L/E saddles I bought for
$99 close-out.
But if I was in the saddle market, I'd go to BikeTiresDirect and buy a B17
Special at their discount.

[RBW] Re: Favorite Bay Area S24Os?

2024-01-24 Thread Sarah Carlson
I do love Mt. Diablo but would recommend sticking to Spring nights or
timing your arrival so you minimize the time sitting out in the sun as the
campsites are up high in an exposed area (unless you know a spot with more
tree cover). We had a couple hours baking in the sun in 90 degree weather.
My daughter still likes to joke when we drive by the mountain, "I bet you
it's only 64 degrees up there!" It is one of my favorite spots but I
haven't convinced anyone in my family to do a repeat trip.

Donzaemon - I think most "require" a reservation, but some do have
first some site for bikers/hikers. A few friends also let me know that
 they
have never had an issue showing up during the week. Weekends are probably
 a
 different story.

[RBW] WTB Shimano A600 pedal

2024-01-24 Thread Bernard Duhon
Ok ,
ES600 pedal is less desirable than the A 600 it replaced.
one on ebay NOS is asking over twice the price of a new one.

So I’ll ask the gang if they have a nearly new A600 shimano pedals they would
be willing to part with.

Baring that how about a es600 at a reasonable price that I could try out .

If you're not going to do serious single track I highly recommend the PD-ES600.
https://blog.piaw.net/2022/10/review-shimano-pd-es600.html

My friends were really skeptical that it would make any difference compared to
the venerable and well respected (deservedly so) M520s, but the wings and wider
platform definitely make these pedals feel much better connected than the
M520s, and are the first pedals I've tried that I consider a significant
improvement over the M520s. My biggest issue with them is that you have to
mount them with an allen wrench instead of having wrench flats. Beware though,
they're singled sided (which is what makes the connection feel so nice --- the
design wouldn't have worked with a double-sided pedal, I don't think)! But for
paved riding they're really awesome.

I am in the hunt for a set of dual sided SPD pedals.
I'm going flat on my touring bike but there is too much total overlap on one of
my bikes to do anything but a clip .
I have been riding the old Onza elastomer SPD's.

any suggestions?
