[RBW] Re: What do Rivendell riders use for cycling in the rain in the cold?

2015-10-06 Thread 'Rick' via RBW Owners Bunch
Some spendy shoes that I purchased earlier this year:

http://arcteryx.com/ProductFind.aspx?language=EN=Footwear=Shoes

We have had some wet weather lately, of the kind that would have inundated
my previous go-to gore tex hikers and blundstones, and these worked dandy.
Stiff sole in the approach shoes works well with my grip kings.

[RBW] Re: Dyno light recommendation

2014-10-07 Thread 'Rick' via RBW Owners Bunch

I had this little set up for about three years on commuter Atlantis:

http://www.amazon.com/Light-Motion-Stella-600-Dual/dp/B005NGQ0GO/ref=sr_1_9?s=sporting-goodsie=UTF8qid=1412714331sr=1-9keywords=light+and+motion+stella

One is a flood the other a spot. Two Phil mounts on either side of the
Mark's Rack, ran the cable through the front strap and into the loafer
where the battery resided. Very bright, had to angle them down to keep
from blinding traffic. Downside is of course charging. My commute isn't
too bad, so I could hold enough juice during winter by charging over night
once a week.

Experimented briefly w/ the Shimano dynohub on a Bleriot, I did have
considerable vibration.

Finally got Rich Lesnik to build a wheel with the SON28 and picked up one
of the upside down Edulux fellows. (I think these are no longer in
production, and there is no current inverted-edulux ii either,
unfortunately).

That's the lead up to me saying: I like the wheel, hub, and light a lot.

Rick.

[RBW] Re: SONdelux or Shutter Precision SV-8 Dynamo Hub?

2014-10-07 Thread 'Rick' via RBW Owners Bunch
What size tire? Rich said that on 700c that the SONdelux will cut out a
bit at lower speeds, whereas the SON28 does not. More resistance
(marginal) on latter.

Trying to decide on a dyno hub.

Which one has less drag and more power, and what else could be of concern?
I have read the blug about the Shutter, but it doesn't give definite stats
on how it specifically compares to the SONdelux.
Since this is gonna be a big investment, I want to be sure I am getting
something that's going to run lights really well, and not make noise, not
make the bike vibrate, and keep the lights on after the wheel stops
turning, etc. No flicker, no cutting out at low speeds, etc.

 Thanks for any info.

Weird, I had mine originally mounted on a 57 cm Bleriot. Pretty sure I
lopped off some material with a dremel too -- perhaps prior owner did same
on a smaller frame.

Love it. I used the bosco bars to update my wife's old specialized
rockhopper for a daily rider for my son. And the spot under the bars was
plenty big enough to put a swift industries saddle bag that I had laying
around.
