[RBW] Re: New bike day: 60cm Sergio Green Platypus complete

2023-12-12 Thread BrettG
I've always gone Shimano as well, but I've read positive things about
Sunrace (Taiwan-based) and the quality of their "lower end" components.
When I was at RBW they mentioned it's a new thing going to Sunrace with
some of the completes and I trust they would only spec them if they were
good.

Of course a brand new drivetrain always feels great so the real test is how
the components hold up after a few thousand miles. Front derailleur is the
Skeleton Key one - not very attractive but works perfectly. In any case,
those components are easily replaced if necessary but will definitely leave
it as-is for now.

Can't wait to hear what you think when your Green one arrives!

Brett.

Thanks for your comments on the drive train. I somehow missed the part
about the rear derailleur being a SunRace I thought it was one of the
Shimano variants that Riv carries. I'm a little disappointed by that since
I have always gravitated towards Shimano. I thought the front derailleur
was the one they called the Skeleton Key. I was going to swap the front out
right away. Maybe now I'll keep both and see how I get along with them.

[RBW] Re: New bike day: 60cm Sergio Green Platypus complete

2023-12-11 Thread BrettG
Yes, although I'm in range for a 55cm it would have required a longer stem
and huge amount of seat post showing for the same setup. I always go as a
big as possible with Riv frames.

I forgot to mention 2 things:
- The novatech rear hub with the stock wheelset is one of quietest hubs
I've ever used. Even a bit quieter than shimano. I don't care for noisy
hubs so was quite pleased. Hopefully they stay silent.
- The sergio green color is even better in person than in photos. Has a
certain "shimmer" in the sunlight I didn't expect.

I'm impressed with the parts they chose for the completes. I would have
picked the exact same stem/bar/crank/tires if I was building myself. The
rest of the sunrace and tektro components are an excellent value.

2023-12-11 Thread BrettG
Some additional info some may find useful (I couldn't put in original
message because too long)

- Roman confirmed this morning it does not come with a saddle so I think
website description wrong (there was a discussion about this somewhere).
- Cranks are 173s (for 60cm anyway).
- Tires are 48mm and awesome! Perfect for this bike.
- Gearing was also perfect- 42/30 with 11-34. I used the full range on the
ride and didn't need anything higher or lower.
- "Lower end" Sunrace drivetrain worked really well. Not sure about longer
term durability but I was impressed.
- The cheaper V-brakes/levers always worked really well. Felt great.
- Even though wheelset is "machine built" they seemed to fine to me.
Perfectly true and even tension. Will just have to monitor longer term.

Brett.

- Cranks are 173s (was important for me).
- Tires are 48mm (and awesome!). Never tried tires that big but loved them.
- The "lower end" sunrace drivetrain works really well. Not sure about
long term durability but I was impressed.
- Wheelset is "machine built" but I put it in the truing stand and it seems
fine. Will monitor these...
- Gearing - 42/30 and 11-34 was perfect. I used the full range and didn't
need anything higher or lower. I may go to a 1x11 setup at some point but
not for a while.

2016-12-08 Thread BrettG
I sent a message to the seller 2 days ago asking for a bit more detail (age
of frame, wheelset info), but received no response. The frame itself looks
like it's seen little use unless it was recently repainted. I was
surprised at the lack of info in the posting as well.

[RBW] Setup of Paul's Cantilevers

2016-10-04 Thread BrettG
I have tektro 720s on my quickbeam and Paul cantis on my simpleone (which were
on the quickbeam for years). The Pauls adjust tension using a 15mm wrench a
5mm hex and are a breeze to setup and are noticeably better than the tektros in
power and consistency. The tektros as you know are adjusted by a small screw
but the tension adjustment is limited and I also find their performance is
lacking, but as I'm running fixed most of the time on the QB they are backup
brakes anyway. I think the Pauls would be a nice upgrade. I use neo retro
front, touring rear.

[RBW] Re: Question about running fenders on a SimpleOne or Quickbeam

2016-10-01 Thread BrettG
Just last week I finally built up a NOS SimpleOne frame I purchased so I
dealt with this exact issue. Having a Quickbeam for 12 years, I already
knew all the different ways to handle fenders (PW hubs are the easiest) but
in this case since I'm using an Automatix hub and long Honjo fenders, so I
found that I had to rotate the fenders forward quite a bit to provide more
space for the wheel to exit in the rear. I have to deflate the tires, of
course, but the fender lines look ok and there is minimal stress. Even so,
from past experience I did find it useful to put some reinforcement at the
bridge attachment to the fender (looks cool too!). There are photos here
if you want to see what the SimpleOne looks like with long Honjo fenders:

[RBW] Re: Front Rack Advice

2016-01-21 Thread BrettG
I've been trying to decide between Mark's M-1 or M-18.
They both seem identical except for the extra struts and light mount on M-1,
so I don't understand how the M-1 is rated 4.4 lbs and the M-18 is 17.6?
If you will only mount on the front, seems like the M-18 would be the better
choice as I don't see the advantage to the M-1 with lower weight rating.

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe Marathon Supreme 32s on a Romulus

2012-05-24 Thread BrettG
Last winter after getting several flats in the rain on my VO Rando
bike
I put on some Supreme 32s as a temporary replacement for Grand Bois
Cypress
as the width is close to the same (the Supreme 32s measure about 30 or
31mm).

I also have a Romulus with Jack Brown blues (measure 33mm) and
frankly
having ridden the Supremes I definitely prefer the Jack Browns on my
Romulus. I've never had a flat in over 3 years of using the Jack
Brown
blues on my Romulus. The Jack Browns are more comfortable, more
attractive
and produce less road noise that the Supremes. I've also used the JB
greens with success. The Jack Browns and Grand Bois Cypress tires are
by
far my favorite tires, it's just that the Grand Bois tires have been
more prone to flats.
