[RBW] Re: Considering an AHH - Advice sought
I had multiple excursions over 50 mph on my Riv at the Bike Tour of Colorado in 2006, going downhill. You probably won't be able to keep up with your friends going uphill, but you can bomb past them going downhill ;-) On Mon, Aug 31, 2009 at 2:55 PM, Erikelang...@gmail.com wrote: Hi all: I am in the market for a lugged steel frame, and am about ready to pull the trigger on an A. Homer Hilsen. Based on my needs (described below), I would greatly appreciate any guidance as to whether or not this is the right bike for me, and how I might choose the right tires. I live in Boulder and plan to use the bike primarily for road riding in/around Colorado, so there will be a significant amount of climbing involved. There are also quite a few gravel paths that I would like to take advantage of around my house. I have no experience camping or doing longer multi-day trips, but the concept intrigues me. Basically, I do not currently own a bicycle, so I want this bike to serve all of my needs. My largest concern is this: most of my friends and neighbors go on 3 - 4 hour rides up into the mountains on their super-light carbon frames. Is there a way for me to set up the AHH so that it is functional on mellow gravel roads, but also keeps up with my friends on the steep climbs? Will a 32 tire work for this? I would prefer to only own one set of tires if this is possible. And I am leaning towards building the bike with bar-end shifters. Any reason I should consider otherwise? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Cheers. --~--~-~--~~~---~--~~ You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Thank goodness for steel spokes and Rich Lesnik
There are other carbon-fiber spoked wheels out there that have been performing well for years. This particular Mavic rim is just a bad design and prone to failures. But then again, so are the Ksyriums for that matter, which are metal rims with metal spokes. I've seen enough of them taco'ed to stay away. I don't see people going around blowing up Zipp wheels on a regular basis, or Hed or Spinnergy either. I will admit that, I am not a fan of Mavic rims at all, no matter what materials they are made of. They have given me lots of problems. On Tue, Jun 16, 2009 at 11:23 PM, David Faller dfal...@charter.net wrote: Although nothing conclusive has been determined regarding the actual cause of this structural failure (spokes vs. rim vs. tire vs. frame material), when I get a flat tire on my metal wheels, they don't blow apart like a Christmas cracker. The culprit here, fundamentally, is carbon and using it where it probably doesn't yet belong. We all realize the pressure the industry has to race to the Next Big Thing, but riders (racers, in particular) are being used as Guinea pigs. Advanced engineering requires advanced, and extensive, testing. I trust Mavic to make metal rims. But that's all. Until they quit treating their customers like crash test dummies, I'll stick with their old school metal products which, thus far, have been reputable. Stick with what you know. [RBW] Re: Tire Wear and Tear
Yes, that is what I am speaking of when I referring to the failure mode: a bulge that eventually will not go under the brake bridge anymore. This has happened to all the rears that I have mounted. None have lasted longer than 1200 miles. The fronts don't last that much longer. This is mostly in brevet usage. I may be exceeding the weight rating of the tire, I weigh 240 and I ride a Rivendell with lots of gear along for the ride. The tire weight limit is 275. You do the math :-) I still love the tires and will continue to run them. I don't know how to break out of this without replacing relatively new tires at some point. Your front should out last the rear 3 to 1 if not more. So, to break out of your cycle of yearly replacement, which actually isn't a bad idea, you could just rotate your tires - toss old worned rear tire, move front tire to rear and put a NEW tire on the front.
