[RBW] Re: Pittsburgh night ride

2013-10-17 Thread Claude LaVallee
Hi Andy,

That looks like a nice ride.

Could you let me know how I might perhaps join in? I'm moving to Pittsburgh
in a few weeks, and it would be great to connect with people there.

Do you bike the same route every time out, or pick a new one and explore?
Any weekend day rides? Are these rides mainly for the athletic set? Are
there any women in the group (I'm one, despite my typically masculine name)?

Thanks,
Claude

A very pleasant group I've ridden with every Tuesday, April through
September has now gone dormant for the dark seasons. Several of us have
decided to keep up the riding under the cover of darkness. It's become a
celebration of generator hubs and LED headlights. We gather at Tazza d'oro
coffee and head out for the highs and lows, enjoying the pretty vast
infrastructure available off the roadways where possible.

We wound our way through the Carnegie Mellon University campus, through a
dark Panther Hollow, along the jail trail and the Hot Metal Bridge (named
for the one-time cargo of the insulated railcars taking molten iron or
steel across the river to secondary mills) to the South Side. We picked a
reasonably desolate path up into the heights of Mount Washington and along
the non-view neighborhoods and then crossed the summit line to Grandview
Avenue to enjoy the proceeds of our work.

Mount Washington had coal seams that were mined horizontally with some
opening on the face overlooking town. Chutes delivered it to the riverbank
for a simple barge trip to the fires of the steel industry up and down the
rivers. Hell with the lid off James Parton wrote in 1868. Certainly
different now. This place is now about education, medicine, and technology.
Other recent insights include the growing value of the waterfront *
mileage,* which had been avoided as the uncomfortable place where
industry was. Redevelopment has been managed to value those massive tracts
and many bikeway miles have been established along them. The Great
Allegheny Passage starts at the fountain in Point State Park and runs
upstream along the city side of Monongahela (*Mon*) River, crossing the
Hot Metal Bridge and continuing to the town of McKeesport where it picks up
the Youghiogheny (*Yock*) River along which it runs into the Allegheny
Mountains toward Cumberland, MD then Washington DC via the CO Canal
towpath; 325 miles. Too much for tonight.

We descended Sycamore Street (part of the old Thrift Drug Classic and The
 Dirty Dozenhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dirty_Dozen_(bicycle_competition))
to Station Square, crossed the very decorative Smithfield Street Bridge to
downtown and the jail trail, and back to the start where several of us
retired around the corner for a pleasant post ride refreshment and
 conversation.

Nice to keep the positive vibe of the ride group going into dark part of
the year. Sure is a glowing plug for lighting, I know it takes little
provocation to spill praise for mine.

Oh yeah, pictures prove... Pittsburgh Night Ride

[RBW] Re: Dynamo Lights and Theft

2013-04-09 Thread Claude LaVallee
A similar thing happened to me during a trip to the grocery store, also on
a busy street, in front of a busy bus stop, and in broad daylight, except
the thief tried to get my basket!

I came out of the grocery store to find that someone had cut 5 of the 8 zip
ties that held the basket to my front rack. I promptly got some metal
plates and screwed my basket to the rack, and also now keep both my basket
and the rack locked to my frame with a cable, as a deterrent. My seat post
and saddle are locked to my frame too, with a U-lock.

I'm a fan of pitlock skewers and, as soon as I can afford them, I'm also
getting some of those to secure my wheels to the frame (for now I just TiGr
lock both wheels to the frame and a bike rack (30 TiGr lock), and back
that up with a U-lock).

Lights are way more valuable than a basket, so I would consider a good
pitlock skewer set lock yours onto your bike.

Good luck, and don't let this stop you from the practical use of your bike!

Is light theft like this common? It was on a busy street in daylight. An
 Acorn bag was left alone.

[RBW] Re: Lock question

2012-11-20 Thread Claude LaVallee
Hi Ned,

I can relate to your wife; my Rivendell bicycle is my sole vehicle so I'm
very protective of it.

TiGr (http://tigrlock.com/) makes a very strong, lightweight titanium lock
that allows you to lock both wheels and the frame to a secure bike stand.
It is the strongest theft deterrent I have found.

I supplement that with a D-lock, and intend to install pit lock skewers
(http://www.pitlock.com/) to lock my seat post, wheels, saddle and seat
post (in the meantime, I secure my seat post and saddle with a second
D-lock).

Another couple of security items I'd like to get and install are a GPS
device (ex.: www.spybike-gps.com) to alert me in the advent of someone
taking my bike, and an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification Device like
www.snagg.com) to help me in recovering my bike if it is stolen. These are
not common in North America yet, but I think there is growing interest.

Lastly, she might be interested in looking into bicycle insurance options
that are becoming available, like Clipp (http://getclipp.com) or Better
World (http://www.betterworldclub.com/bicycles/bike_assistance.cfm/) which
doesn't, as far as I know, cover theft, but offers interesting benefits.

Good luck!
Claude

[RBW] Re: bicycle karma

2012-08-10 Thread Claude LaVallee
I've been looking into bicycle insurance, too, and am considering
Better World Club because it's comparable to driver insurance
policies (if you have a car, you can apparently add bicycle and
cyclist insurance to it; I don't have a car). Clipp is interesting as
well, but not available in my state (Maryland).

 Thanks, all!

I'd just gone out to RBW WHQ this afternoon to get the original receipt to
prepare for all the claims paperwork that would start tomorrow, and just like
magic, the minute I left the shop I got the call with good news.

So, two related questions now that I'm coming out of panic mode:

 (1) Can anyone recommend their hard case for airline traveling and shipping?
I fly quite a bit and eventually will look into a folding bike or a coupled
bike, but for now I want to upgrade from the barebones soft-sided Ground
Effect Tardis bag I'd been taking.  I'd originally skipped the hard case
because they are very heavy and I didn't want to risk extra overweight
charge, but now I see that the major airlines are declaring *no* liability if
the bike isn't packed in a hard-sided case.  (Bonus points for a smaller case
that might fool airlines into thinking it's less than 62 linear inches and/or
 not a bicycle.)

 (2) Can anyone recommend reasonably-priced but decent bike insurance?  I had
some insurance in Germany, where I was until now, but I need to get something
 in the US now.

 Thanks again and happy riding,
 Nicole

put up with it if there are enough words and photos from cool rides/tours.

 What are you folks reading?

[RBW] Would like to test ride Betty Foy in DC area.

2012-05-02 Thread Claude LaVallee
Hi all,

I'm new to this Group, and am thrilled to have found you all!

I'm writing to ask for your assistance in finding a Betty Foy to test
ride in the D.C. area.

I've been lusting over the Betty Foy for a while, but I'm concerned
about buying a bike without having tried it first, because it's a big
purchase for me. Ideally, I'd like to test ride a Betty Foy in my size
(5'3), but any mixte Rivendell for a person about my size would be
great. Though I have a preference for drop-down noodle handlebars, I'd
still like to try out the Albatross.

My 70s, steel frame, mixte design Motobécane with drop-down noodle
handlebars has gotten very beat up and now needs such a serious
refurbish that it makes more sense to just get a new bike for my
commuting, errand and recreational riding (I don't have a car, so my
bike is my main transportation, year-round).

Thanks to anyone who can help!
