[RBW] Your Boulder and Rivendell compare/contrast.

2015-05-30 Thread Clayton.sf

I have had an OS Boulder all road

.7/.4/.7 top tube
.8/.5/.8 down tube

Now I have a standard tubed Boulder all road

.8/.5/.8 top tube
.9/.6/.9 down tube.

Both are 61cm center to top. Both are as light a tubeset as Mike was
comfortable going with for the frame size and the rider (me ~170 lb.).

Both ride amazingly well. Yes, the plane ;-).

There are some possible subtle differences that might just be in my head since
I never rode them back to back so take this with a grain of salt.

The OS bike felt just a little more sure footed and maybe just a smidge
harsher. Not in a bad way. the standard bike feels a bit smoother and the
flex a bit more gradual. Hard to really describe. It still feels sure footed
but in a lighter touch sort of way that might take some brief getting used
to. Both are fantastic. I'd likely go standard tubed again in the same gauges
(not lighter) if I had to do it over, but you won't go wrong with either. Key
thing is to talk to Mike. He knows what he is doing and will steer you right.

Re: [RBW] Re: Bullmoose bars and width, who cut theirs?

2015-05-27 Thread Clayton.sf
Don't cut them. ;-). By today's MTB standards the bars are already narrow.

Move break levers inward so you can just reach them with your index finger
from the end of the grip and tape up the rest.

I use the full length of my bars.

The width is great for descending (and climbing) but make sure you adjust
your arms to an elbows out position. Will give lots of control and absorb
shocks better.

notch for better leverage or control, or leave them wide. and if bike size
matters to bar width. I'm 5'7 per the other comment.

I am well aware of the Herse brand. (No longer Kone's btw.).
That being said a Herse will not ride inherently more plush than a Boulder so
I was wondering if there was another brand he is involved in. Right now all I
know of is Boulder.
I might be misunderstanding the use of the word plush though which is what
prompted the my question in the first place.

Now my question is: for those in countries where you drive on the right,
which side do you put your light on, if you have to sacrifice a little tire

Left so that those coming at you and turning left will see you better?
Right so that those turning on to your road from the right will see you?

The keep feet on the pedal and provide enough protection from it to ride double

keep feet strong, but on the bike I like a sturdier sole. For rides under 60

[RBW] Re: Dyna-Sys compatible bar-ends now available - opening up new possibilities

2015-04-16 Thread Clayton.sf
Using this shifter on the downtube of my 1x10. Indexes flawlessly with
dynasys zee short cage der and a 10 speed cassette.

On Thursday, April 16, 2015 at 10:18:32 AM UTC-7, Jim Bronson wrote:

In case you wanted to run something like oh a 40T in the back or any
Shimano 10 speed MTB deralier, or any permutation thereof, Microshift now
makes a dyna-sys compatible bar end:

 http://www.microshift.com.tw/BS-M10_Shifters.html

Microshift also makes a 40T compatible derailer with 47T capacity, which
is the largest capacity I have seen, granted, it is fugly, but if you value
 functionality over form...

 http://www.microshift.com.tw/RD-M78L_rd.html

I had not previously considered going to 10 speed but if I can get a
cassette that goes to 40 for a reasonable price, that would make it more
interesting for me because I might be able to get away with a standard 110
bcd compact double crankset rather than having to go with wide low
cranksets. I think the smallest smal ring you can get on a 110 is 33T,
IIRC. Currently running 28T on a 74 bcd on my triple converted to wide low
double, with 34 in the back

With the current config, 44/28 in back and 11-34 9 speed in , I have from
 104.0 down to 21.4

With a proposed config of 48/33 in front and 11-40 in back I get from
113.5 down to 21.5. So basically the low end stays the same, I don't have
to use geek doubles anymore, and I get 113.5 on the top end.

The only downside is that the cassette has a 17 to 21 jump on it, which is
a 23.5% jump, pretty large for a single gear shift. The current 9 speed
has a 17 to 20 jump on it which is a more manageable 17.6%. So maybe I
should be thinking 11 speed 11-40. Ha ha.

The reason I want 113.5 on the top end is that in tailwind situations on
brevet rides I have had problems gearing out at 104 inches. If I could
pedal to a little higher speeds in tailwinds especially in rolling terrain
like we have here in the Texas Hill Country, that would help me keep up
with my friends a little better. Grant is probably shaking his head now
but hey cycling is a big tent.

Of course being able to get the gearing I want on the low end using a
110bcd double is reason enough in of itself for me. I just have to solve
the problem with the big gap in the cassette. Hmm.

[RBW] Re: Tips for Quick beam for long, mountain rides

2015-03-10 Thread Clayton.sf
I think longer ss rides are best accomplished with the just do it approach.
Ideally make it an official ride. I have found Brevets to be ideal for this.
You can ride at your own pace but there is still enough shame involved to make
you not want to quit ;-).
Gearing is somewhat personal. I used 42x18 for last month's 300k and found it
too low. 42x17 would have been nicer.
Remembering that it does not need to be fun to be fun can help too

[RBW] Re: Anyone doing the EBDJ Wednesday Challenge?

2015-01-28 Thread Clayton.sf
Just adding my experiences to this.

Been doing the eating part since mid October 2014.
Added kettlebell and convict conditioning in November 2014.

To date I dropped 23 pounds and am able to do more sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups,
and squats than ever before. Blood pressure, blood work, etc. was deemed
really good by any standard by the doctor earlier this month (not that I was
ever told it was bad, but it was still nice to hear).

Mid November I went for one of my standard rides and felt like crap logging
some of my worst times ever. Early January I did the same ride again and broke
almost every personal record feeling great. In addition instead of my usual
hammer bar an hour I was fine riding on half a banana for 4 hours. We will see
how 12+ hour rides go, but so far so good. It does take time to adapt but for
me it has been totally worth it at least so far.

In terms of calories I don't worry much. I eat when hungry, drink when thirsty.

Dinner was bacon with Brussel sprouts, onions, and egg. The kids had seconds
and asked if we could have this again tomorrow.

Best,
Clayton, SF

Re: [RBW] Considerations for losing the front deraileure

Get a CLUTCH type Shimano xt rear der and wide range 10sp mtb cassette (like an
11-36 or some such). Pair that with a small (30-36 or so) wolftooth (or other
narrow/wide ring) front ring and you won't drop the chain.

I run a setup like that on my Mtb and have yet to wish for a smaller gear and
have yet to drop a chain. This is on a rigid setup over often fairly rough
terrain.

Enjoy!

It's designed for mounting a fender to a typical tubular brake bridge
(without the modern Square center section). If you were able to source one
of these, you could file the curved recess flat to fit the square section
of the bridge. Or if you know someone with a lathe, this could be a really
fast and easy widget to make.

Anyone interested in meeting up for a monthly Rivendell ride in the Bay

to an hour and include anyone located within spitting distance)? I feel
like there's a lot of you Oakland/Berkeley members on here, some of you
must be riding on weekends and fit within my style and timeframe of riding?
Or is there something like this already exists (besides Manny's rides which
look totally awesome but would take too much out time and energy out of my
weekend)? Would be nice to meet up and ride with some like minded folk.
More of a social gathering with some medium duty riding mixed in. Maybe
beers mixed in at the end?

One of my highlights this year was Entmoot. So much fun to meet fellow
Rivendell owners from all over. I've also enjoyed getting to know the
Rivendell employees, and fellow riders through the list and buying/selling
things locally. Would love to organize something where we meet up more
regularly, for a more casual, social ride setting. And by 'organize' i mean
that in the absolute loosest sense of the word. Last thing I want to be
responsible for is any sort of official group with insurance and waivers,
 etc.

I typically go for rides out of Rockridge (up tunnel road, snake rd, or
shasta in Berkeley, and figure it out from there) on Saturday or Sunday
mornings around 9:00 or 9:30 for around 3-4 hours (road, trail,
mixed)...usually, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter when time is tight.
Other times I'll go to N. Bay or further out in the East Bay (over the peak
and into Mt Diablo/Shell Ridge area) and find some routes there: road or
trails. I'm not very fast. Touring pace. Home in time for lunch and a beer.
I do this almost every week (rockridge departure) so could be a weekly
thing if enough people are interested. I'm not big on being out more than
4-5 hours or so, 4 hours is my sweet spot.

My thought is a once a month thing (like first saturday or sunday?) If
enough interest I can just setup a google group and we can take it from
there. Just gauging interest for now or seeing if something else is already
out there. Maybe an inaugural ride starting at the Rockridge BART the
weekend of Jan 3 or 10? I think I already have some travel the first few
weeks of Feb so could already be a rocky start for the second month, but
happy to make some amends for the greater good where I can.

Possible overnighter meet ups as well?

Let me know, PM or reply to thread.

Disclaimer: my main road ride is actually not a Rivendell, but a Gunnar
(outfitted with a front rack and sackville trunk bag of course), though I
have three rivendells now for trail (hunqapillar), commute (cheviot), and
single speeding (QB) that I can take out to fit in :) Unless someone wants
 to trade me an AHH.

[RBW] Re: Bar end vs. down tube shifting... What's your experience...

One (to me) huge advantage is the fact that DT are fairly well protected
whereas bar end shifters live in a fairly exposed place when it comes to
crashing, leaning, falling over. With a little practice both work just fine.
