[RBW] Re: Atlas tubeless?

2023-08-07 Thread David Baldi
another anecdotal take, for what it's worth:
I have run a pair Dyads tubeless for about 3 years with no problems at low
pressure (oracle ridge, ~17-25 psi). But it did take more work and patience
to set up. As Patrick has already noted, in the absence of a good shoulder
you can build up the center of the well with Gorilla tape. I prefer
starting with two layers of tubeless tape to get the seal, and then
gradually building up the center with a narrower strip of Gorilla tape
until, with the tire mounted, the bead is super tight even in the well.
Which also means it sucks getting it over the rim in the first place, and
that you'll probably need to do it a few times until you nail it. By using
a thinner width for the gorilla tape, you create, if not a shoulder, at
least something of a lip to keep the beat from going back to center in the
case of a flat. Though IME the orange seal connection the forms at the bead
has always been enough to keep it in place.
What I decided for myself was: when it is time to rebuild or upgrade the
wheel, I'll go tubeless compatible for peace of mind, less trouble, and
easier field service. Until then, I'll stick with the Dyads. I should also
mention that, once I set up a pair of Oracle Ridge tires tubeless,
replacing them with new tires (Hatcher Pass) was easy—I didn't have to redo
that whole process.

[RBW] Re: WTB - Oracle Ridge or Antelope Hill

2022-04-09 Thread David Baldi
Still looking for very used oracle ridge? I have a pair that I am about to
replace. Standard casing, cracking around the center knobs, and some pretty
tired sidewalls. On the other hand, there is tons of tread left, I have
never had a flat or any problem with them whatsoever. I bet there is still
quite a bit of life in them.

[RBW] Re: Sam and 48 mm Oracle Ridge

2021-10-13 Thread David Baldi
Hey all,

Black and cream is mine. I can't report on how these tires fit on a
slightly wider rim, but will say that the clearance is totally fine on
Dyads, with a few mm of clearance everywhere. Tightest points are fork
crown and chainstays. Still running this setup about a year later.

[RBW] Re: Cazadero, Snoqualmie Pass comparisons?

2021-05-30 Thread David Baldi
+1 for RH knobbies. I build two wheelsets for my Sam, one with 44 Snoq and
other with 48 Oracle Ridge. I just switched back to the knobs and it feels
so good. You don't get exactly that same acceleration feeling on the road
as you do with the slicks, but they still are quiet and fast. IMO, what you
gain in the dirt is much more than what you loose on the road. The 42 HRs
look great on Rivs too—I think I recently saw them on another sam on this
list.

No luck here, but just chipping in to say that, when mounted on

[RBW] Re: Blue Hillborne pics?

2020-12-23 Thread David Baldi
greenteadrinker,

I have Oracle Ridges on my Sam and I love them. The extra volume and the
extra grab on the dirt (like your HRs, i'm sure) make the Sam such a fun
trail bike. Clearance is tight but safe—though I have mine mounted on
dyads, not cliffhangers. You could see some pictures here
 if you are interested.

Re: [RBW] How large of a tire will a Sam Hillborne actually fit

2020-11-15 Thread David Baldi
I just built up a Sam with Rene Herse Oracle Ridge on Velocity Dyads. Feels
fantastic, and the clearance is perfect for use w/o fenders.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone using 48mm Compass/Rene Herse tires on a Sam Hillborne

2020-09-07 Thread David Baldi
I am really excited that these fit. I have found that there are not many
700c tires around that sam max-out range to choose from. Has anyone here
maxed out a sam w Honjo fenders? I know the 52s fit.. but has anyone tried
bigger?

[RBW] Re: Camping bikes

2020-04-27 Thread David Baldi
Hi all,

I love camping with the Medium saddlesack. I have enough just enough
clearance to run the bag without any support (first run 59 Clem, PBH 90.5),
but I have a Mark's rack back there now and like having the extra
stability. I have a cheap Soma rack upfront with a 137 Wald. For a three
night trip through the San Rafael's (Bosco pics), I kept lighter stuff in
the basket plus one camelback bladder, and lashed stuffsacks to the
underside. We had to carry 13 liters each of water on this trip—I taped
waterbottle cages everywhere, as you will see, and carried two bladders in
the saddlebag, in addition to the camelback up front. No tent, still plenty
of room, but heavy! But I was so comfortable the whole time. Weight
distribution felt really good. For S24Os I do the more or less the same,
without the stuff sacks, and think I will sew a shallow framebag for when I
need to bring a tent (I am lashing it to the toptube currently, as in the
pictures). I am always surprised how much you can do with saddlebag +
basket.

[RBW] Water in Los Padres?

2017-06-08 Thread David Baldi
Hi all,

I am gearing up for three days in Los Padres backcountry (SLO-SB). Has
anyone been back there this year? And did you find water? I know we had a
huge amount of rain this year, but I've heard that much of it fell on the
"wrong" side of Padres.

I will certainly provide a ride report and share some pictures once back!
We've got a Clem, and old Shogun, and a Steelman between the three of us.

Cheers.
David
