Oops. You're right of course. I should've read what I wrote more
closely. And you're also right in that the Rawland Nordavinden seemed to
handle a loaded handlebar bag just fine. It was a full camping load that
seemed to tax it. A great bike otherwise.

[RBW] Re: Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-31 Thread Dick Denning
Kieran:

I went on a 5 day fully loaded tour on my orange 58cm Rambouillet back in
September. It was the tenth annual fall tour I take every year with a few
riding buddies. Had a Jandd hooped low rider rack held onto the stock fork
blades with P-clamps. I used full sized rear panniers on each side of the
rack and had 15-17lbs in each pannier. Also had a VO rack that held and
supported my Sackville handlebar bag. Used an old Adam (Rivendell bag) in
combo with a Bagman off my saddle and carried my tent in the bag. Used
Gran Bois Cerf (28mm - but measure more like 30mm) tires with VO Fluted
fenders.

I was very happy with the way the way the bike rode and with the weight low
didn't get an annoying amount of wheel flop.
Not tons of clearance between the tires and the fenders, but enough to get
by. This was the first time I rode the Ramb for camping, much less with a
front load. I've camped with other front load setups and very much prefer
it to a rear load bias. I thought the Ramb rode great and will
absolutely use the same set up for future tours. I weight about 160lbs.

Like you, I've thought about having my Ramb modified with a different fork
(a bit more trail, room for more tire, mid stay eyelets..), having the rear
brake bridge raised, etc., but haven't gotten to it.

For comparison, I rode a 57cm Nordavinden on the prior year's tour with the
same set up (less tire b/c the Norda had even less clearance than the Ramb)
and didn't care for it as much as the Ramb. The ride was too noodly, there
wasn't enough tire width under me, and maybe it had too much(?) trail as
the Norda's have a lot of fork offset (70mm?).

Kai from Brooklyn is right. Side to side balance is what matters. I had a
total of 40-45lbs of stuff on this years tour and had all but maybe 10lbs
on the front end between the panniers and my h-bar bag.

Hope this helps.

Dick

Justin:

This may/may not be a good alternative for you. I have a 61 Bleriot (f
and headset) that I would be interested in selling. I bought the f and
headset from another list member a few years ago. I intended to build it
up but it never happened. Not a Saluki and not a 62, but in the
neighborhood. A few normal scratches/scuffs, no dings, an 8.5(?) out of
10. Let me know if interested and I'll answer any questions you might
have.

Thanks,

Hi all, after normal bike selling indecision and second guessing am
putting this Rambouillet up for sale.

I bought this from the original owner, another list member, but have ended
up only riding my Roadeo. I will email you detailed pics if you are
interested. Professionally packing and shipping included in the price.

Mostly Ultegra build with details listed below. Many new parts as noted,
rest have normal wear but are fully functional and good for many more
 miles.

Ultegra triple crank, 172.5 mm, 48, 42, 28, with Shimano middle ring and
unknown but good inner and outer chainrings
 Ultegra front and rear Derailleurs
Shimano HG 27-12 9 speed cassette
 Suntour bar end shifters
Wheels are Ultegra hubs with 32 spoke Open Pro rims and new Jack Brown
Green tires - true and fast, I love them
 Nitto 65 seatpost
 Nitto Noodles, 46 cm
 Nitto Technomic 5 cm stem
Shimano brake levers with Tektro cross levers
 New SR Respiro saddle
 New SKS fenders
MKS GR9 pedals and half toe clips
New bar tape with gel pads underneath
I don't know what kind the brakes are, seems to me they are an IRD
predecessor I got from Rivendell some years back. They work great.
 Original Harris Cyclery decal.

Paint is very good with a couple of minor chips/scratches and a small
chain suck scrape that I can see. The one flaw this bike has is a shallow
dimple in the right side of the top tube. It came to the original owner
that way and is a minor cosmetic flaw with no impact on the integrity of
the tube. Detailed close ups available.

Great riding highly versatile bike, as you already know.

[RBW] Re: Uber-Tall Cockpit Dilemma

2012-02-24 Thread Dick Denning
Mike:

Think about using a Soma High Rider Stem Adapter, along with a threadless
stem. You'll get up to 60mm more height out
of the stem adapter than you can get out a Technomic or a Tallux, more
extension that the Dirt Drop, and you can gain a
bit more height by using a stem with some rise to it. And the Soma part is
available in silver. It will look more ungainly
than the Tallux, but it might fill the bill for what you're looking for.

[RBW] Re: Is the San Marcos a true Rivendell?

2012-01-26 Thread Dick Denning
Pat:

I'll add some comments regarding the San Marcos since I just finished
building one (my first San Marcos)here in my shop within the last couple of
days. A 54cm in particular. It's winter here in Ohio so I haven't had a
chance to take one out for a test ride, but from the way it looks I expect
it will ride exactly like every other Rivendell: beautifully balanced,
lively, all-day comfortable. In fact, in terms of tire clearance and the
way it looks it, it looks like a Romulus or a Rambouillet, but with the
expanded frame geometry of a Sam Hillborne.
I find the Romulus or Rambouillet to be a bit more toss-able/touch more
lively than the Sam Hillborne and I would expect the Sam Marcos would be
more like the Rom/Ramb, but that's just guessing at this point.

I have the one here in the shop built with 700 x 32 black Pasela's with
P-45 silver SKS fenders, and like the Romulus or Rambouilet it all fits
together just great. And like the Romulus and Rambouillet I expect you can
squeeze Jack Brown Greens into the frame with fenders - though some would
argue that it's a bit too tight. I've always been comfy doing so, but
that's your call.

I'm not sure what you have in mind when you say light touring? And not
knowing what frame size you're looking at I can only suggest the San Marco
should do just fine, as long as you're okay with the limitations on the
size of the tire and the braze-ons on the bike. I have a buddy of mine who
rides his 61 Romulus on fully loaded tours and he seems to do fine. I'm
guessing the San Marco would do just as well, especially in the 58 63
frame size with the double top tube.

This bike was a first run Saluki, not a Protovelo. If I recall correctly the

I wanted it b/c at $1000 for the ff, including a custom rack, I could resell
it (at a profit) to someone who
heard me gushing about the nice ride of my 59 Bleriot. I figured I'd be able
to resell it. Anyway, someone
else beat me to it. Too bad. I was not actually thinking of owning it myself.
I already have far too many
bikes. I'm already at N. Why would I possibly want another bike?

[RBW] Re: FS: 60 cm Saluki

2011-07-11 Thread Dick Denning
Steve:

I'd like to buy your 60 Saluki. I have a 59 Bleriot, but I have always
wanted a Saluki and yours looks like a great one.
I especially like the front rack with the light attachment. I like the
green color as well.

Let me know.

Also, just curious as to why are you selling it?

Thanks so much,

Dick Denning,
Celina, Ohio.

[RBW] Re: Riv TOSRV Riders

2010-05-02 Thread Dick Denning
Mark:

The last couple of years, at Friday evenings' TOSRV registration, The
Country Bike Shop
has had a display of Rivendell's. Glad you've enjoyed the display
Mark, but I couldn't
get the planets to align this year, and I'll not be doing a vendor
display. Maybe again next
year.

Maybe Mark has pictures of his AHH somewhere, and if so, it's worth a
look. It's a very nicely
done up Hilsen. I'm sure Mark and his Hilsen will be able to handle
the extra miles and hills
(detour due to a bridge out) on this years TOSRV just fine.

Hope to see you next weekend Mark, and I'll keep the beer truck open
for you, if you do the
same for me.

Dick puts on a nice display of Rivendell bikes at TOSRV Friday night
registration and the next day on the road I often get questions about
my AHH.  One woman in a pace line remarked that she didn't realize fat
tired bikes could go fast.  (Little did she know that it is not the
tires that make it go fast, it's that a 50 year old man is trying to
keep up with an attractive woman that makes it go fast).

There is a 1971 photo in Eugene Sloane's Complete Book of Cycling that
shows a pack of TOSRV riders climbing a hill.  Of 20 bikes,10 have
upright roadster style handlebars and most of them are wearing normal
clothing.   When I'm contemplating buying a new bike bit for TOSRV I
think about the thousands of riders forty years ago who didn't need
fancy bikes, shorts, lightweight this or that, to complete the 210
mile tour.  They just got on their bikes and did it; and they do it on
the same roads, over the same hills and in the same weather as we do
 today.

As the bike boom hit North America Greg and June Siple took their
large tour organizing expertise to a lot of new bike clubs to help
them put on a tour.   I think there are still rides called TOSRV East,
TOSRV West, and TOSRV South.  The NYC Five Borough ride is another
 offshoot of TOSRV.

Next year will be TOSRV's 50th.

Dick, I'll be working hard to get to Tracy Park before the beer truck
closes.  Adding 8 extra miles to the 105 mile route is not helping.

[RBW] Riv TOSRV Riders

2010-04-30 Thread Dick Denning
If you live at all close to Ohio, and have been riding for awhile,
you're probably familiar with the Tour Of the Scioto River Valley
(TOSRV), http://www.tosrv.org . TOSRV starts and finishes in
Columbus, Oh., and is always on Mothers Day weekend. This year is the
49th TOSRV and will be held next weekend, the weekend of May 8th
9th.

I usually ride with a group of riding buddies, and we have a few
Rivendells in the mix. Usually a couple of Rambouillets, a Romulus,
sometimes a Rivendell or Bleriot, etc. This year I know of one Sam
Hillborne that'll be joining us as well. I often see a couple of
other Ramb's (John) and an AHH (Mark?) too.

Just wanted to let any other RBW owners/fans know they're more than
welcome to join us on our ride to and from Portsmouth, Oh. We leave
from the SW corner of the Statehouse on Saturday morning. We aim to
gather there about 7:15AM on Saturday and try to leave by 7:30, though
we're often running 15 minutes late. A quick recreational pace gets us
to Portsmouth before 5PM.

Feel free to join us. Look for a couple of blue Rambouillets and
you'll know you've found us.

[RBW] Re: East Coast Riv

Not exactly east coast, but the country bike shop in ohio is also
something to keep in mind.  I am not connected with them in any way,

they are well versed in Riv fitting, etc  As a plus if you look at
their website they still have a number of saluki's, if anyone is
 looking for one.  http://countrybikeshop.com/

JPP:

Thanks for mentioning The Country Bike Shop. We do have a good number
of Rivendells
available for test rides (currently 12) but we're about as far from
the East Coast as you can
get in Ohio. We're actually just 15 minutes form the Indiana
border. Cincinnati, Columbus, Oh.,
Toledo, Ft. Wayne, In. Indianapolis are all about 2 - 2 1/4 hours
away. Detroit is 3 hours.

And I need to update the picture section of our website as we're down
to a 50cm Butterscotch Saluki
and a Fawn (Champagne) 54 Saluki.
