Re: [RBW] WTB - John’s Strap

2023-03-21 Thread E. Ricky Creek
John's straps are the same as the classic Arno straps. If you don't need
the rainbow version, you can get them in black for cheap by the pair at
scamazon or wherever. I used to be able to get them at my Ace Hardware.

in shipments and some are held back for builds, but I was bummed to see

Bag is pending.
Eric, it needs a rack to work. The bag is huge. The distance between the
rack and the saddle is flexible. If the distance is low then the front
scrunches up, but it still works fine. Unlike a large Carradice that will
side sag if it doesn't have enough clearance, this one works fine even
scrunched. I use this model of bag for all my touring along with a
handlebar bag. I have done 3 weeks with that setup and nothing else.

[RBW] FS: Sackville Saddlesack Large

2022-06-15 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I have an almost brand new large Saddle Sack. This is likely from the 3rd
run. I bought two at the same time to safeguard against the future, but my
first one from 2011 is still my main commuter bag and I honestly don't see
it ever falling apart (though it looks really beat), so I am selling this
one. I mounted it a couple of times, maybe rode with it twice, and then
moved it around the garage for a few years. It has two grease spots and the
saddle mounting leather shows a tiny bit of creasing from being mounted.
The plastic stiffener inside is spotless and the underside is the same.

It is gray.

How about 170 bucks shipped?

Re: [RBW] 1400 front derailers

2022-04-25 Thread E. Ricky Creek

It is probably some version of the IRD sub compact.

My last apartment had a side door that took a skeleton key. I had a box of
old keys and one worked on that door. I found another similar key and filed
it down to work, too. So that became the door we always used, because why
wouldn't I? This was just a few years ago.

On the March 18th email update, Rivendell reported that the container
full of frames would also contain *1400 Front Derailers*. They
indicated this model will work with all their bikes, but they didn't say
exactly what it is, giving it the nickname "skeleton key". I wonder how
much space 1,400 front derailers will take up.

For those who don't know what's special about "Rivendell Front
Derailers", it's a combination of a few things:

 1. Rivendells typically have a bit more BB drop than most other bikes
 2. Rivendell builds often have a small-sized "big" chainring. Like a
 42 big ring, or a 38, or a 34!
 3. Rivendells typically have a more laid back Seat Tube Angle than most
 other bikes

the combination of those three things brings the trailing edge of the
front derailer down close to the chainstays. So close, that in many cases
you flat out can't set up the front derailer "correctly". You have to run
it floating way above the chainrings. For a lot of people, this works
 just
fine, and some people actually brag about it. When somebody claims that
Combination X is a problem, it's fun to retort "I have Combination X and
 it's just fine!"

Anyhow, 650B bikes have less of this problem (because less BB drop).
Still, it's something to think about. I prepared by stocking up on
 Shimano
CX70 Front Derailers when they existed, and now I'm super stingy with
those. I'm going to give the "skeleton key" FD a look and may buy a few
 of
those also. As an amateur machinist and maker, I've even dabbled with
 making my own Front Derailers.

Or, you can avoid this altogether and run a 1xDrivetrain!

Re: [RBW] Re: Which RBW model (current or former) is best for light touring?

2022-03-31 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I replaced, sort of, my 2005 Surly LHT with a 2011 Waterford Canti-Sam. I
rode up and down the West coast and then across the USA on the Surly. I got
the Sam as a Country Bike to complement the LHT (this was to remain my
loaded touring bike).
The Sam ended up being my dedicated touring bike almost right away. It
handles whatever sized loads just fine and is significantly stiffer in the
BB, which is important to me as a heavy rider. I have done some 2 day tours
and some 2 week+ tours on the Sam and the only thing I noticed was some
front end wiggle on descents, fixed with setup adjustments.
Then in 2017 I finally got my dream bike, a Waterford Atlantis, which is
now my touring, etc. bike, but the Sam really can't be beat and I wouldn't
hesitate to ride it on any length tour shy of full off-road touring.
The LHT has been a frame and fork hanging in my garage for years now. I
don't imagine I'll do anything with it, but I have so many memories with it
that maybe someday...
For what it is worth, my wife has an Appaloosa, and it is awesome! But I
would consider it more of a long WB, long TT Atlantis type bicycle. Not my
thing, but she loves it. It is stout as F*$K!

[RBW] Re: Show me your derailleur stash

2022-02-17 Thread E. Ricky Creek
These are all really cool when seen together like this. I have been curious
to try and old Campy derailleur with the Soma adapter cage.
https://www.somafabshop.com/shop/product/soma-derailleur-cage-threaded-set-2790?category=764
Has anyone tried that and was it a keeper or just an oddity?
I honestly probably won't ever stray from the Altus 310 for the rest of my
bike life. I stocked up early in the pandemic and have recently been buying
the replacement pulleys, too, so I am set.
Now for front derailleurs...

IMO it's hard to beat the look and feel of the Albatross. I've set up
my Sam with something like 6-7 different bars at this point; started with
the Albatross and finally came back around to that setup a few months
 back.
It seems like most newer bars that Riv makes come back extra far to
complement the longer reach of their newer models. Since the Albatross
predates those bikes I think they strike a nice balance when coming from
drops. I think something like +2cm on a stem will keep the fit/feel from
popping you too upright if you're used to Noodles. I have an 11cm stem and
 have considered a 12, but since it's pretty fine as-is I haven't bothered
 with the swap.

Shifter choice might also play into your decision. I have Microshift
thumbies flipped inboard which sorta takes away the "in between" hand
position because it clogs up the bars a bit. This is less of an issue on a
bar like Chocos because they have additional sweep. If you run bar ends,
you get that extra 2ish cm of sweep from the bar end pods and also get to
keep the "in between" position. I've been thinking about moving to stem
shifters or moving the thumbies up next to the stem in the forward-most
 hand position.

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 55cm Hillborne PRICE DROP

2022-02-02 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I hope you find a buyer, Ahmed.
I hope folks realize that the Hillborne was sort of the bike that started
the whole modern era of Rivendells, as I don't feel like the Hillborne gets
as much regard as the newer, evolved models. The Bomba came first as a 6
degree upsloping tubed bike, but the Hillborne was the first of the Taiwan
expanded geometry bicycles that have come to exemplify Rivendell (this is
according to my fuzzy memory). It was meant to be a do all, beat it up,
ride it like crazy, never repaint it (I recall grant saying he hoped nobody
would ever repaint one), and pass it down to your children bike. I honestly
think anyone looking for a Riv and fits this 55cm Hillborne couldn't find a
better bicycle. I have had a super secret 56cm double TT Waterford
Hillborne since 2011 and it is a never sell for me. It was my primary
touring bicycle for a number of years, also commuter, shopper, and do all
bicycle. It can use drops or uprights. Folks seem to want a Riv mixte or
droptube, and I have had both and sold them both because I never actually
used the lower tube for stepping "in" to the bicycle, I still throw my leg
over, and with the expanded geometry of the Hillborne, you don't have to
worry about standover anyway.
Also, and this is again only my experience, I never got along with the long
wheelbase that the newer Riv's have. I much prefer the ride of my old style
Atlantis, Hillborne, and Simpleone.
I hope this helps anyone on the fence.

[RBW] Re: Please help me find a Rosco Bubbe MMM!

I have a vague memory of Grant posting a series of pictures of homemade
"lift tube" alternatives, including a bunch of duct(k) tape and maybe some
leather and a twig? Does that sound familiar to anyone else?

[RBW] Re: Updates on, and further questions regarding the Riv Road Standard 1995

2022-01-29 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I would pass on this frame and buy a complete early Trek 520, 620, or 720,
all of which can be had for $400-$500. There is a 50cm 620 on SF Craigslist
right now. Then keep an eye out for a Toyo/Waterford Atlantis, which will
become your forever bike! I had an 88 520 that took 35mm tires and fenders
without issue. That said, nobody can tell you what your perfect "forever"
bike will be. I've gone through 20 bikes before settling on 2 perfect
bicycles (Waterford Hilborne, Waterford Altlantis), and one fun bike
(Simpleone).
Also, consider the trauma of getting a bicycle stolen recently and how you
will treat a bicycle that could easily have $3000 invested in it, plus the
rarity factor. I'd never want to park that thing outside.
All that said, if it fits you and you like riding it, then it is the best
bike for you. To paraphrase Grant from years ago, the best bike is the one
you ride.

Re: [RBW] From One Curious Photo . . . .

2021-12-28 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I spent an afternoon with Greg Siple a number of years back while riding
across the USA, and using my memory only he told me the adapted derailleurs
and any other modifications for those early epic touring bikes were done at
a local Missoula shop called Braxton's. I think he built bicycles as well.
Ian Hibell's Africa bike is also up in the rafters of Adventure Cycling's
headquarters and worth a look.

[RBW] Re: Clicking MKS bear trap pedal

2021-09-29 Thread E. Ricky Creek
This is bad/lazy advice, but when my MKS touring pedals start clicking
(these are the only pedals I use), I take the dust cap off and and just jam
a bunch of grease in there. It always makes the click go away. I eventually
overhaul them correctly, but who wants to do that instead of riding.
Also, in my experience it is pretty easy to tell if it is the pedals just
from riding.
Again, this is only my experience with these specific MKS pedals.

Re: [RBW] Ride Quality Difference between the Atlantis and Clem H?

2021-06-24 Thread E. Ricky Creek
It is time for me to fess up as to how many Riv's were (until recently) in
my garage: 7. I ride a Waterford Atlantis, a Waterford Hillborne (rare
canti/double TT 56cm), a Simpleone, and I recently sold a Gomez and a Clem
H. My wife rides a Cheviot and an Appaloosa (both are in my size range). I
rode the Clem H for 5-6 years and every time I rode it I thought "I just
don't love this bike, but it is the bike I ride the most (commuter)." I
ride a 58cm traditionally sized bike and found the 52 Clem H just never fit
right (too small). The 60cm Yves Gomez was too big and never felt
comfortable. Much like you my dream bike (since 2004) was the Atlantis.
I've had mine for 4 years. If I only could keep one bike, it would be the
Atlantis. I am not as fond of the long chainstays as others here are, but I
have ridden them and didn't think they are bad, but I prefer the ride of my
Hillborne and Atlantis (and sometimes when my knees are feeling okay the
Simpleone). If you are into bikes and dream of different bikes and spent
crazy amounts of time looking at bikes (and parts!), thinking that X bike
will complete your bike quest, then buying your dream bike now may not
truly satisfy your hunger. I bought, rode, sold, traded, gave away many
bikes on my journey to my current stable, which is perfect for me. But if
I'd started way back in 2003 (when I got into riding as an "adult") with
this bunch of bikes I likely wouldn't feel the way about them as I do now.
I don't know what the answer is for you, nor does anyone, really, but you
can't go wrong with any bike that fits you and you enjoy riding. Plus if
you score a Clem on this list, it will still be worth what you paid in a
year (maybe more?!), and folks on this list are always up for a "new" bike.

That was long winded and didn't answer your question. The Clem H rode slow
and fat for me (as I am slow and fat), and it didn't fit me right because
of the huge gap between sizes. The Atlantis (original style) rides much
more like a traditional touring bike (stable, easy handling), which I
prefer. I rode a LHT for years and the Atlantis rides more similar, though
much better, that that. The bikes were set up with upright bars (though the
Atlantis now has wide drops, which I prefer).

[RBW] Re: Anyone going to stock pile 650B rims for non-disc brakes?

2021-06-10 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I'm usually not an alarmist, but I've been stockpiling parts since last
April. I hope to ride rim brakes and 8 speed friction until I can't ride
anymore, which I hope is 35-40 years from now. It was tough seeing all the
shimano and sunrace 8 speed cassettes with a 34t dry up or go for way too
much money. They are starting to show back up again slowly, but it spooked
me. I have accumulated a pretty nice larder of consumables (tires, tubes,
chains, brake pads, cables/housing, some rear hubs) in the last year. My
next big project is buying 10 or so Sun CR18 rims (700c, polished, 36
hole). I don't think 700c rims are going anywhere, but this particular rim
may disappear some day and I just like how cheap and good they are. If you
can afford to do so, I'd snatch up a couple extra 650b rims just to sleep
better at night. I don't mind having parts on hand, even if they will all
be available again next year, because I love bikes, bike parts, and I do
all my own mechanics for my wife's bikes and mine (5 Rivendell's between
us).

[RBW] Re: Seat bag security

2021-05-24 Thread E. Ricky Creek
When I lived in Chicago and used a Carradice I would pair it with a
Pletscher rear rack with a mousetrap. When I parked the bike I would open
the mousetrap over the bag and then use a little padlock to lock a loop on
the bag to the mousetrap. It was an easy lockup trick and nobody every
messed with it.

[RBW] Wider Noodles

2021-05-10 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I noticed in Will's email update a mention of a 54cm Noodle prototype.
Well, consider me excited. I recently put Nitto/Crust Shaka bars on my
Atlantis to get something wider than a 48 Noodle and absolutely love them.
It got me thinking that it would be cool if Riv put the same effort into
perfect wider drops that they put into all the wide variations of
loscotoscochocobosco sweptback bars. Also, I recall over the years that
various threads about drops have mentioned demand for 50+ wide noodle bars.
Anyone else jazzed?

[RBW] Re: Racks & Baskets - weight on the front...

I've been toying with this for a few weeks:
https://www.amazon.com/Wald-Rear-Medium-Basket-13-5X6-25X11/dp/B001EL7P34?th=1

I see folks piling ridiculous amounts of junk on baskets and strapped to
saddlebags because panniers aren't "cool" anymore. Why not start your own
new style of basket pannier packing. If it takes off, I'm sure a new
cottage industry of makers will sell custom Wald 520 bags to go in the
baskets (thus become panniers again), available in any waxed canvas color
you want. I'm joking, of course.
(I'm not joking about the Wald pannier baskets on my Clem...)

[RBW] Re: Intro from Pittsburgh

2021-03-08 Thread E. Ricky Creek
Welcome!
Cool bikes!
My wife and I visited Pittsburgh a few years ago and brought our bikes.
Lots of hills, lots of busses, but we had a great time pedaling around a
new city.

I moved to a new town a three years ago and my daily bike commute stopped
being a daily thing. I found that recreational riding is boring if there
isn't a theme or destination. I got back into film photography and now have
things that I search out. Right now I'm super into ice freezers that you
find outside of gas stations or liquor stores. I don't know why, but they
seem really classic to me. Cemetery rides can be fun, too.

[RBW] Re: bike and paddle

2020-05-29 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I have a cheap inflatable kayak and a cheap folding bike that I use to ride
up river and float down. The folded up bike without wheels attaches to the
back and the wheels stow on the front. It works fine but a little bit of a
pain. I am planning on adding a tube into the mix to put the folder in and
tow with the kayak. My river is slow and wide so I'm not worried about
rapids or anything. My old river was small, shallow, and was only passable
when the water was high.

I have never tried paddle boarding but I hear it is fun. Thanks for the
cool idea!

[RBW] Re: Orange Ram Touchup Paint

2020-05-28 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I had a thought about a month ago that it would be great if there was a
collective effort to list touch up paint for Riv colors. It was nice to see
how quickly the Riv Reader Archive came together as well as the models,
years spreadsheet. I would personally benefit as I'm brutal on my bike's
paint jobs and have many different colored Riv's in the garage. I have
noticed also that Testors is no longer making some of the classic colors,
like the Atlantis green, but Waterford has a close approximation. Even
folks that have discovered nail polish that works with some colors. Since
the Riv Timeline spreadsheet (
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1JRuMAwuQ-Rc6bQXCBmfkmXA9jMMF5zBdBIyUOmkruYM/edit#gid=0)

is editable, would it be okay to add a column with touch up paint/polish?

Re: [RBW] What have you learned during the isolation?

2020-04-27 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I grew up with a multi use path at the end of my street. I started using it
at 5-6 when I learned to ride a bicycle. The etiquette of the trail was so
ingrained in the culture of childhood for my peers and I that even in our
punky middle school BMX years, we were still "on your left" conscious. I
still get annoyed when folks don't respond to the bell, clicking levers, or
on-your-lefts. Now with the paths flooded with folks just trying to get out
of their houses, I am more aware that the inherent social contract of MUP
etiquette isn't something that others know or were taught, and I am
accepting of it more now than ever. While some signage exists, I'm sure, I
don't expect a family with two dogs, a couple of kids on Razors, another on
rollerblades, and a stroller to be on edge in case a middle-aged weirdo on
a lugged bicycle and a wool cardigan rings his bell.

What this traffic has done for me is make me get out my local maps and come
up with new rides, which has been fun. I moved to Elgin, IL a year and a
half ago and have been working on riding all of the streets in town and
admiring all of the brilliant old houses, flowers, learning all of the
street names, etc.

[RBW] Shinshields?

2020-04-10 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I was up at 3:30 this morning (I couldn't sleep) and was flipping through
some old Riv material and came across Shinshields in the 20th catalog (
http://notfine.com/rivreader/Catalogs/RivCatalog20.pdf pg. 77). The copy
reads:

"It's for poncho wearers who want to keep their lower legs dry without
wearing rain pants. One size fits all calves, and they're orange. At
current sales rates, we have a ten-year supply. When we run out, that's it.
Orange, with Velcro and reflectors."

Alas, these seem to be no more and I missed out. I have a pair of Clem OS
pedals (one has some scuffs from laying the bike down) or a pair of Shimano
105 aero levers (nice condition ) to trade if anyone has a pair they are
willing to get rid of. I also have a scuffed up Ritchey seatpost (27.2) to
throw in with either to "sweeten" the deal if needed.

 Lemme know.

[RBW] Re: New Bike Day: The Wait is Finally Over!

2020-03-20 Thread E. Ricky Creek
I love that you used a Pletscher rack. I have one on my Atlantis and my
wife has one on her Appaloosa. I always pick them up at flea markets if
they are under $5. They are almost always missing hardware, but there is a
way to mount them using the leftover P-clamps that come with Nitto racks.
  Congrats and engoy!
