[RBW] Re: 1 Toptube or 2 -- Comparing the Two Versions of the Hillborne

2010-09-01 Thread EcoVelo
I think it's cool that these various iterations of the Hillborne are
out there - keeps it interesting. Mine is a single top tube 60cm
Maxway with cantis and the fork shown on the Waterford in Bryan's
photos. It might be just a tad flexy for some people, but it feels
just right under my 160 lb. I'd love to ride both of Bryan's frames
built up with identical components; what a education that would be!

Obviously, the double toptuber is the Waterford version.  It also
includes braze-ons for cantilever brakes, and a rear bridge for the
cable stop.  The fork crowns are different.

Because I know people will ask ... the weight difference between the
frames is 8 ounces.  For perspective, that is about the difference
between a full water bottle and one that is 3/4 full.

Both bikes are in our build queue; we'll post pictures when they are
 complete.

Now, let the debate begin ...

As with any re-touch, it won't be 100% as good as new, but this is
just about as perfect as can be expected.

And for making the surface smooth ... well lots of thin layers (and

[RBW] Re: Sam Hillborne Photos and Review

2010-06-28 Thread EcoVelo
Hi Patrick,

I have a house full of cargo bikes including a Civia Loring, Yuba
Mundo, and Surly Long Haul Trucker; the Hillborne is much livelier
than any of those tanks.. ;-)

Seriously, when I say lively I'm thinking more in terms of frame
compliance than weight. The LHT is a good bike to use for comparison
because it's very popular and similar in configuration to the
Hillborne; the Surly is much stiffer and, to me, has a dead feeling
in comparison. In this sense, the Hillborne is indeed lively (at least
in the 60cm size).

I'm surprised at your comment regarding the steering - I find it
perfectly spot on. Were you, by chance, running a heavy load in the
rear?

Enjoy your new bike - I hope it ends up working out for you.

Regards,
Alan

On Jun 28, 9:41 am, PATRICK MOORE bertin...@gmail.com wrote:
Interesting writeup, Alan, particulary about how you find the bike lively. I
think that my greatest disappointment has been, after the floppiness and
light feeling of the front end, a sort of sluggishness when accelerating
compared to my other bikes, even the heavy and relatively cheaply built
Motobecane Grand Record. When I stand on the pedals on the SH, it feels
 reluctant to surge.

Now the SH is pretty heavy with rack and fenders in rear and dynohub in
front, but it's not heavier than the Motobecane, I don't think.

Now, to place my criticisms in perspective, I don't find the SH handles
annoyingly badly; it just doesn't shine like the bikes that remain in my
possession after filtering dozens through my garage over the last 20 years.
Perhaps riding position has a lot to do with it, since I also take a 58
usually, but chose a 56 with saddle pretty far back and Noodles on a 9 cm
Technomic just a wee bit higher than plane of top of saddle (rump to nose).

Anyway, it will be fine for the sort of touring I plan to do, firmish dirt
with pavement. And I'll spend this week riding it to make sure I explore its
possibilities fully -- I've put only 180 miles or so on it since buying it
 in March.

[RBW] Re: Selle Anatomica

2009-09-27 Thread EcoVelo

I have S-A Titanicos with slots on two of my bikes, and a Brooks B-67
and B-17 on two others. I love the B-67 on bikes with upright bars
like North Roads, but for bikes with more drop to the bars, I find the
S-A saddles more comfortable than either of the Brooks saddles (this
is purely personal preference). I've heard many complaints about the S-
A stretching prematurely, and I don't doubt it, though I'm sure that
depends upon a person's weight and riding style. I weigh 155 lbs. and
the stretching on both S-A's has been minimal so far (I've been riding
one for over a year). I'm curious to try an Imperial, but I have to
think part of what makes the S-A different than the Brooks is the
softer leather in addition to the slot. I'm sure in the long run the
Brooks saddles will outlast the Titanicos, but for me it's a
worthwhile investment.

[RBW] Re: expanded frame geo sparse sizing

2009-09-23 Thread EcoVelo

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I suppose if you think of the
limiting factor as handlebar height, then frames with upsloping top
tubes do provide a wider range of adjustment per frame size. Rarely
(at least among the circle of riders who would be interested in these
bikes) do we hear anyone talk about wanting their handlebars lower,
but we frequently talk to people who would like their handlebars
higher, but are limited due to stem extension, steerer length, etc.
The upsloping top tube gives the rider a few more centimeters of
upward adjustment, effectively extending the fit range. Again, this
only makes sense if you believe maximum handlebar height in relation
to stand over height is the limiting factor.

On Sep 23, 6:56 am, newenglandbike matthiasbe...@gmail.com wrote:
First let me say that the Hillborne is an awesome looking bike and
seems to have incredible versatility.     It is truly a unique bike!

What I'm wondering about is the sparse sizing available for
Rivendell's expanded geometry frames, such as the Hillborne.   As I
understand it, the reasoning behind offering fewer sizes of these
frames is that one size will fit a wider range of PBHs.    However, it
seems to me that the upsloping top-tube should not actually add any
versatility in terms of fit, because the numbers that matter in sizing
a bike are not actually affected by it.

Specifically, I think that given a particular BB drop and seat-tube
angle, the two *main* numbers that matter in how comfortable a bike
will be are (1) how high the handle bars are and (2) how long the top
tube is*.   For a given rider, their chosen seat height is not going
to change no matter how tall the seat-tube is, unless of course the
seat-tube exceeds their seat height.    So in 'normal' frame fitting,
the 2 cm seat-tube size intervals for a particular model are really
allowing the rider to choose their base handlebar height and handlebar
distance, to be fine-tuned with stem length etc.     Perhaps it would
make more sense if the industry had chosen head-tube length/TT length
rather than seat-tube length as the number indicating frame size(?)

Anyway, in offering only 4 sizes of a frame for the Sam Hillborne, you
are really only getting 4 choices of base-handlebar height (not
including the bounded, yet infinite number of positions you can adjust
a quill stem) and top-tube length.   If those are the most important
measurements in fitting a frame, I wonder if the wider-range thing
 really holds true.

Just to clarify, I'm not criticizing Rivendell at all for only
offering 4 sizes of the Hillborne frame.   Also, I know NOTHING about
frame design next to Grant Petersen and the folks at Rivendell.     Of
course I realize that it makes sense from an economical point of view
to limit the sizes of this frame--   however, it still does not make
sense to me that one of these frames will fit a wider range of riders,
any more or less than a frame with a standard geometry.

 Matt
Admiring the Hillorne but just wondering

*this is assuming typical head-tube angles, rake, cs length, etc, and
 of course a comfortable seat.
