Re: [RBW] WTB: White Industries 16T Freewheel or 16/18 Dos

2020-03-24 Thread Elton Pope-Lance
Still looking?

I’ve got a 16/18 DOS brandy new in the box.
$100 shipped.

I also have:

17T & 22T for $80 each (shipped)
18T Trials for $100 (shipped)

The 17T has been mounted and ridden almost not-at-all. It looks and feels like
new. Others are NIB.

[RBW] FS: BUMP - Peter Mooney frameset $550 shipped

2019-02-25 Thread Elton Pope-Lance

It’s got paint chips and scratches but no dents or dings. It’s straight and
true. Some time ago this frame set got me seriously hooked on 650B. It is
fast and fun with 650B x 38mm tires and 57mm reach brakes. It also builds up
as a mighty fine 700C road machine, of course. Included is a new IRD roller
bearing headset.

Size: TT 60cm (c-t) x ST 58.5cm (c-c)

More photos are here

Asking $550 (includes ConUS Bikeflights shipping)

Re: [RBW] Rivet Independence Saddle

2016-03-20 Thread Elton Pope-Lance
The Rivet Pearl is closest to a B17 width-wise. The Independence is closer to
a Pro in the Brooks line. My experience is that the Pearl is more stable,
holds it’s shape better, and is less likely to sag the the B17. This may be
due both to the thicker leather and the “fender tie” that prevents "fender
flare”.

Anyone have cases and waterproof mounting hardware they recommend? My

This would be for mounting on a Riv of course!

Hi All, just thought I'd share some photos from a recent ride to Vermont.

border, and took a nice route to get there and back.

 http://www.flickr.com/photos/43029278@N07/sets/72157635839369194/

There are many, many miles of dirt road and snowmobile/ATV trails on the way
up there, some smooth, some rocky, but all fun. Even the paved roads are
nice. The scenery was gorgeous, and the leaves had begun to change already,
especially north of White River Junction. The small towns and nice people
 in Vermont are the best.

The bike handled perfectly, and the only thing that rattled loose was my
mudflap(!) toward the end of the trip on a particularly bumpy section.
You may notice I only have one water bottle, but that's because I prefer
dromedary bags for carrying most of my water- the bottle is just a more
convenient vessel to drink from :)

This was my first fully loaded ride using moustache bars and the Nitto Large
back rack, which I bought from Riv a while ago-I had been using a Tubus
Cargo prior to this.I found the M-bars to be fantastic for all-day
riding. I had used them before for ~2 hour rides on my QB and reckoned
they'd be good for touring, but have always just stuck with Noodles since I
know they work well for me. This ride convinced me that M-bars give
plenty of hand positions for comfort and work well on bumpy terrain when
riding somewhat heavily loaded. You do need a short stem with M-bars though.

My only (minor) complaint about the Nitto rack is that platform is much too
far back behind the rear axle, and it is difficult to get weight far enough
forward with it due to the tombstone being so far back.Sliding the
mounting points forward at the top results in the rack tilting forward at an
odd angle. This is strange to me since I ride relatively large frames, and
most racks (especially non-adjustable ones) end up tilting backward because
of the steep angle of my seat-stays. The Nitto seems more geared toward
frames with ultra-short chainstays, or super-tall frames.BUT it is still
a ridiculously nice rack though, and I have like 5 inches of heel clearance
with it (size 10's) so if you have large feet/ heel clearance issues with
your rack it would be a good option.I may go back to the Tubus for future
loaded riding, as it seems ideally suited to frames in my size in terms of
where the platform is located.I also really like an R14 with the large
saddlesack when not riding with panniers.

Anyway hope you enjoy the photos.

 Matt

[RBW] FA: Shameless Self-Promotion of XTR Atlantis ending tonight

2012-02-29 Thread Elton Pope-Lance
Esteemed Listees,

19:24:25 PST this evening marks the end of the auction:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Rivendell-Atlantis-Shimano-XTR-Road-Touring-Bicycle-Lugged-Steel-MTB-bike-/300669187962?pt=Road_Bikeshash=item460147b77a#ht_648wt_1343

With 5 hours to go, it's perilously close to the very reasonable $2750 reserve.
Heck, even the BIN is a steal for this build.

Good luck all. I'll throw in a set of new MKS Touring pedals and a Rivendell
cap for list members.

Ultegra hubs are cup and cone. I overhaul and replace the balls about every
~10K miles, though they haven't really needed it that soon.

How long do the sealed bearing on these modern Ultegra hubs go before they
 need replacing or servicing.
Mine have about 15k miles on them.

Subject: [RBW] Sam Hillborne 56cm question

 Hi all -

My first time posting...I've been wanting to get a steel lugged bike
for a while now to use for commuting, grocery shopping, rides with the
kids...basically an all around general bike to use when I'm not riding
 a road bike.

I've finally landed on the Sam, and have been saving to get enough $
to do a complete build. I'm about half way there, and discovered on
their website that it seems the 56cm only comes with a double top
tube. I emailed a few days ago to ask if this is the case, but haven't
 heard back.

So, here's what I'm wondering - is the 56cm Sam only with a double top
tube now? If so, what would you suggest as some other options? I
really like the look and the idea of the Sam, but honestly don't like
the look of the double top tube at all...and if I'm spending that
much, I want to love not only the feel of it when I ride, but also I
want to love the look of it

Re: [RBW] hilsen build questions

2011-11-06 Thread Elton Pope-Lance
Shimano used to state that the max cog size for either Ultegra was 27t. They
now state 28t, IFIRC. This may be because they now make Ultegra level 11-28
cassettes. Either Ultegra model will comfortably manage a 30t cog - that's the
reason that Sheldon introduced the Harris custom Century Special cassettes in
13-30 and 12-30. They play nicely together. Some have gotten them to work
with 32t cogs by reversing the B adjustment screw and the like, but the setup
can be a bit finicky.

I'm happily running an Ultegra GS (medium cage) on my Atlantis with a 13-30
Century Special and a 20-33-46 triple.

If I'm not mistaken, max cog size (27t) is the same on both Ultegra

This is nuts!. . .

6 Rivs (+ 1 on order)
2 Macs
1 Lo Prinzi

Feels like the right ratio to me. . .

Two Rivs (one Quickbeam for me, one Ram for my wife); three Macs (if
you count the ancient ibook); two Martin guitars (does that relate?).
