Re: [RBW] Re: How do I know when a saddle fits?

2024-03-28 Thread Emily Guise
Hey all, thanks so much for your insights! I'm local to Portland OR, and
there is a bike fitter in town, Pedal PT, who also does physical therapy.
I've been wondering if I should get a fit with them, and it seems like I
should look into it more seriously.

My travel/adventure/distance bike is a Bike Friday, and that's the one I'd
get fit. I do tend to like the flatter saddles, and usually ride with the
nose titled up. A challenge is that I have very long arms and legs but a
shorter torso. Anyone with a similar body type have any advice?

I have tried women's specific saddles- I tried a Terry Liberator for a
while, but it was just SO hard, even though the cutout was fantastic. The
same with the Brookses, I always felt like I was sitting on the metal edge
or the leather was as unforgiving as wood and as uncomfortable. I'm trying
out Riv's new plastic saddle on my Platypus right now. It's sort of
comfortable but also feels maybe not quite wide enough. I'll have to give
it a few more weeks.

[RBW] How do I know when a saddle fits?

2024-03-20 Thread Emily Guise
Hello folks, I come to the group with a dilemma. I've never had a saddle
that I could ride for longer than 20 miles comfortably. I've always ended
up with sore sit bones, numb soft tissue, or both. This has really limited
my ability to go on longer trips and after my five day ride on the C
canal trail last Sept, it was more apparent than ever I need to find a
saddle that won't hurt.

I've tried dozens of saddles over the last 15 years- leather, plastic,
cutouts, no cutouts, wide, medium, softer, harder, you name it. :( Most of
the saddles that have stayed on my bikes for longer than a month have a
central cut out, are on the wider side, and plastic. They're good for
around town, but that's it. I've never had my sit bones measured.

It occurred to me recently that because I've never had a truly comfortable
long-distance saddle, I have no idea how one feels. So I figured I'd ask
the group. How did The One saddle feel for you? Did it "disappear"? Was it
love at first sit? Did it need to be adjusted a lot before finding the
ideal position? Is there a certain amount of miles you ride before it
becomes uncomfortable?

I'd love to hear the group's collective wisdom so I know what to look for
in the next saddle I try out. Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Style on the bike

2023-09-10 Thread Emily Guise
I have been all about the coastal grandma trend this summer, so I've been
wearing a lot of flowy wide-legged pants. All of my current bikes have
exposed chains, so what I've been doing is the peg and fold (as mentioned
above) to my knee on the drive side leg while riding, then a quick unfold
upon arriving at my destination. Folding it at least 3 times seems to be
the key for these kinds of fabrics, as folding it only once or twice has
caused unfortunate mid-ride unfolds. For fall, I usually wear slightly
stiffer fabrics like denim and twill, so even though they are wide-leg, if
I roll them up a 1-2 times then they stay and I don't usually need to peg
them as well. If I get grease on them, it is at least on the inside. I wear
mid-calf or knee-high socks so my legs stay warm.

Leah, I think we are close to the same age, and while the skinny leg and
boot trend was great for biking, the thigh constriction was not, IMO. So I
too am loving the return of high waist wide legs and freer thigh movement!
:)

[RBW] Re: Anyone using an ABUS frame lock on a CLEM JR?

2022-05-20 Thread Emily Guise
Mackenzy- I put a frame lock on my 59cm Clem L last fall. I think this one
<https://www.dutchbikebits.com/locks/axa-block-xxl-lock> is it (I got it on
clearance at Clever Cycles, so it didn't have packaging). I've found it
hasn't added significant weight, nor was it hard to install (definitely a
LOT easier than fenders) and I've used it with both 60cm and 57cm tires, no
problem. Even on muddy paths the tire clearance hasn't been an issue,
surprisingly. It's a nice bit of extra security when I'm locking up around
the city, so I'm a fan.

I had this same fender chain rub issue, and had a bike shop cut out that

[RBW] Re: Help me buy a Riv

2022-03-29 Thread Emily Guise
Hands down, IMO, get a Platypus! Honestly SO good for riding around town,
it's super comfortable and stable. Climbs like a dream, fast on the flats
to speed through those yellow lights, easy step through frame for hopping
on and off. Looks gorgeous and you will receive many compliments, but it
can definitely handle all-too-frequent potholes and unpaved gravel sections
of streets (maybe that's just in Portland?). I have a basket up front and a
rear rack for carrying stuff and they don't weigh the bike down at all, and
they're fantastic for errands.

Re: [RBW] Re: I'm a New Bike Commuter

2022-02-07 Thread Emily Guise
Congrats on the new commute, Roberta! Biking to work is so great, and now
that I'm working from home, I miss it a lot. My own stuff carrying
evolution went from backpack -> backpack in milk crate on a rear rack ->
Dutch style double panniers -> Ortleib pannier -> tote-bag style pannier
(more professional looking than an Ortleib off the bike) -> back to a
backpack inside the Dutch style panniers, which kept it dry and also left
room for errands on the way home. I also had baskets up front, because
baskets are the best.

This is brilliant!!! I like simplicity and no fuss. The She-Devil

If I take my third bike H. Homer Hilsen for a long after work ride, I can

[RBW] Re: Platypus Questions

2022-01-11 Thread Emily Guise
I've had the Pletscher double-legged kickstand on my 60cm Platy since day 1
and it's been great at keeping the bike stable; would definitely recommend
it.

can be too heavy for me to lift onto a bike rack or over a log. I never
weighed my Platy, but I built it up with lightish parts--Brevet rims, some
kind of Gravel King tires run tubeless, 1x with Garbaruk cassette (they
remove unneeded metal), SKS fenders and lighter Axiom rack. One light
nylon bag. I did spend "poundage" by installing a Brooks B68 and
Greenfield kickstand. I can lift it, but it is heavier than my more bare
 AHomerHilsen.

The *ride*, though, is light--light and breezy. My old "lightened up"
Appaloosa probably weighed about the same, and it rode great, but not the
light and breezy ride of the Platy.

If you're ever on the eastern side of the state, I'm in Philadelphia
and wouldn't mind letting your wife test my 55cm Platy.

Re: [RBW] Susie v. Clem Help Me Off The Fence

2021-11-27 Thread Emily Guise
These kinds of questions are so fascinating to me! I have a 2018 59cm Clem
L, and I've test-ridden the medium (55cm?) size Gus (at the Rivelo event
that Maxcr posted video of). I'm 5'9" and my PBH is 89, so similar to
yours, Kiley, although I'm 195 lbs. My strongest impressions of both bikes
are how comfortable they are. They both felt like they fit me right away.
The Gus had albatross bars on it, and that seemed like the right choice. I
was surprised the medium Gus fit me so well, when I am used to riding
larger bikes, but it did. The bars were set about 2 inches above the saddle.

Since it was a test bike, I didn't get to ride it for long, but I did take
it on a paved and unpaved trail and it felt very stable and was easy to
control, which is the same feeling I have about my Clem L. They are both
much faster than they seem- my Clem has a magic quality on a few Portland
hills where it just seems to propel itself up, and I felt that on the Gus
too. I also like the longer rear on both for stability when climbing steep
hills, with or without full panniers.

At that time I wasn't really interested in a Gus or Susie because it did
seem pretty redundant with my Clem, and I prefer the looks and ease of the
super low step-through for city riding, although it was fun to ride the Gus
and compare! Probably if I did more off-road riding they'd appeal more.
However, I absolutely love the music decals and paint job on the
Gus/Susies, though. They were really detailed and special.

[RBW] Re: New Wheels for Clem; need advice

2021-09-01 Thread Emily Guise
Leah, I do find my Clem heavier than my Platy- although some of that is due
to my choice of accessories, like a rear rack that's heavier than it could
be. I've put the Clem on bike camping and grocery/stuff hauling duty and it
seems to shine more there. I even climbed up an 11% grade with it fully
loaded this summer. It was so hard and I hated every minute but I DID IT.
Clems are wonderfully capable machines!

[RBW] Ride Report: 2021 Rivendell Bicycle Works Appreciation Pedalpalooza Ride

2021-08-21 Thread Emily Guise
This past Saturday, my partner Greg and I led the RBW Appreciation
Pedalpalooza Ride in Portland, OR. Pedalpalooza is a regular summer event
here and it's basically fun bike rides about anything, led by anyone.
Usually it's only in June but this year it was June-August. It has been so
fun this summer and a great way to feel connected to the bike community
during COVID. It's meant a lot to me this year.

Greg and I noticed there wasn't a Riv-themed ride like there had been in
years past, so we decided to lead one! It was so hot and muggy on
Saturday, so we weren't sure how many people would come, but I was so
happy to see about 30 folks waiting for us at the start point in Creston
Park. After saying hi to people and admiring bikes, we had a round of Riv
trivia before heading to Coffee Beer for refreshments. Then we biked along
the Willamette River, with another trivia stop on the Esplanade.

Meandering up to N Williams Ave, we had a shade stop at Dawson Park, then
rode up to Golden Pliers for refreshments and to visit our local Riv
dealer. Kevin and Becky are absolutely the best and they were so excited
to see all the bikes. I was super excited to cool off in the AC in the
shop for a bit!

At this point, we were down to about 10 people (as expected-we'd ridden
about 9 miles in mid-90s mugginess) but we had our last round of trivia and
then a few of us rode to the Skidmore Bluffs to enjoy our drinks and hang
out in the shade.

Overall everything went so much better than I hoped! Riv people are really
so nice, and this group was no exception. I got to meet a lot of folks IRL
that I knew from online, and even the leader of previous Riv-themed rides.
Greg and I are already planning on doing another Riv ride in the fall and I
really hope it will not be so hot so we can all wear our wool. :)

Link to check out photos of the ride!

Re: [RBW] Basket shop sack Brompton bags

2021-08-19 Thread Emily Guise
As a Brompton owner, I'd agree that the folding basket is the most flexible
way to go for carrying loads. I regularly stuff mine with very full grocery
bags or all the things for an afternoon by the river and it accommodates a
surprising amount. Mine is probably about 7 years old and has been really
durable.

Phillip, I think this bag has replaced the T-bag:

2021-05-19 Thread Emily Guise
Joyce, so glad you were able to get those Shikoros! I have them on my 60cm
Platy and have been very pleasantly surprised by how nice they feel on the
road; they seem to really smooth out the rough spots. So far I haven't had
a flat in a month of ownership even though our streets are full of glass
and potholes. Two thumbs up from me!

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-04-30 Thread Emily Guise
Congrats Bones and Tom! So happy the Platys are starting to arrive, and I
can't wait to see more photos of builds.

Bones, I really like the tanwall tires with the lime-olive color (I have
them too). The colors really complement each other in a nice earthy way, to
my eye.

Re: [RBW] To My Platypus People!

2021-04-17 Thread Emily Guise
Roberta, I think it will probably be ready at the end of next week or so. I
totally forgot to ask in all the excitement. I went with a soft orange bar
tape and red grips, but I do think that purple would look good too!

Joyce, Golden Pliers is the BEST. Becky, Kevin, Gram, and all of the other
people working there are so knowledgeable and kind. I never feel talked
down to or brushed off and they take the time to answer all my questions
thoroughly. Gram (who is in the background of the first photo) built a dyno
wheel for my Clem and did not sigh impatiently even when I brought in a rim
and hub with two different spoke counts (I had forgotten to double check!).
They're a true gem of Portland bike shops.

I’m waiting on a 60cm from Golden Pliers here in Portland. When I asked if he’d
been given an ETA on frame arrival from Riv, Kevin the owner hadn’t gotten one,
so no idea when mine will arrive. I’m looking at it as a nice spring surprise :)

Re: [RBW] Re: To My Platypus People!

2021-03-31 Thread Emily Guise
Leah, I think what Amtrak is referring to is overall length instead of
wheelbase, because the bikes are hung up on hooks inside the baggage car.
But that's still helpful to know, thank you!

Thanks Joe and Phillip for your help on those numbers. I suspected it would
be a bit too long (one downside of the cushy ride) but was still holding
out hope.

Leah: Greg has chosen to go down the single speed route instead and is
currently building up a surly cross check, so for now we only have one matching
set of bikes. :)

Pancake: some lovely photos the Cheviot! I think it is something about the head
tube length that makes it look extra long. But that orange is just so dang
gorgeous.

Joe: I also said I wasn’t going to get a new bike, and then the stimulus check
came thru and the photos of Platypuses started going around. I was helpless in
the face of such stunning bicycle beauty.

John: can’t wait until Golden Pliers gets their shipment! What an exciting day
that’ll be, and obviously my cry for a photo of a 60cm lime olive frame was
heard, so thank you for alerting the Riv-Powers-That-Be.

[RBW] Re: #ClemWaiting

2019-08-23 Thread Emily Guise
My boyfriend is replacing his Disc Trucker with a Clem L 52cm. On test
rides, he said the Clem climbed better and accelerated faster, while still
being able to carry a lot. That's been his main complaint with the
Trucker-it's great for carrying a lot, but is tortoise-like. Since we
mostly ride around town, with a few longer trips (20-40 miles) a year for
camping, I think he's going to find the Clem fits the bill better.

Anxiously #ClemWaiting until the bike comes in to Rivelo and then we will
BOTH have them! :)

[RBW] Re: Stockholm/Amsterdam/Copenhagen recommendations/meet-ups?

2019-03-29 Thread Emily Guise
Oh man, that sounds like so much fun! I was in Amsterdam this past October,
and really enjoyed visiting the countryside on a tour with We Bike Amsterdam
<https://www.webikeamsterdam.com/>. Bike rental comes with the tour. We
took the free ferry to Amsterdam Noord from Amsterdam Centraal station, and
then biked through the suburbs to Landsmeer and had cake. It was so
peaceful biking by the canals, with folks fishing and boating. We stopped
at the Krijtmolen d’Admiraal windmill, built in 1792, which is a free,
operational windmill, and had excellent interpreters for people like me who
want to ask a *lot *of questions. The outside was made of thatched reeds,
which absolutely blew my mind. Apparently they have problems with folks
pulling the reeds out for souvenirs, and it's hard to find folks who can
re-thatch anymore.

My favorite restaurant was Omelegg <http://omelegg.com/> in the city center
at Nieuwebrugsteeg 24. As their name suggests, they do pretty much all
omelets, and wow, they were GOOD. I live in the land of brunch (Portland)
and I regularly want to go back and eat at Omelegg.

[RBW] FS: Summer'Sunset Cockpit-Bit SALE

2015-09-19 Thread Emily Scott

Hello all! So, a certain automotive matter has come to my attention,
motivating me to clear out some shiny things that ought to be in use
anyway.

Unless noted otherwise, all items have been gently used, or
mounted-and-removed and thus not used, and are in totally great shape.

Hi all,

I'm in the hunt for a gently used Alba-style bar. 26mm stem dia. Prefer to
pick up one in DC, but certainly will welcome all ideas. Feel free to

Thanks!

[RBW] Re: FS: Woolies

2014-06-14 Thread Emily
Folks, a few matters to clarify: These are men's/unisex; the sizes listed
are men's sizes. Images can be found here here.
https://plus.google.com/photos/100585884632025770406/albums/profile?banner=pwa
 The
photos are not so hot, but all of the tops are in great, albeit used,
condition. None of them has pockets. Also of note: 'tis the season for
rampant dog hair to float about the apartment--rest assured, if you claim a
wooly, I will roll it clear of hair, but if you have pet hair allergies,
this is something you should know.

Cheers,
Emily in Alexandria

[RBW] Leaping onto an Atlantis

2014-03-20 Thread Emily Hutchinson
Hello,
I am trying to talk myself into or out of a really pretty new Atlantis with
all it's parts. It would be the smaller frame because I'm short and average
weight 130. The price tag is somewhere around 4000 all said and done and I
feel stuck. My gut is pushing me in both directions because I've never
ridden an Atlantis. I'm also out of country and can't just go find one to
try. I love touring and I'd love to do some long international and national
tours and live in Colorado with hills. Okay thanks.Someone help tip me! Is
it irresponsible to spend this much money?

[RBW] WTT: my Brooks Swift for your Flyer

2012-07-07 Thread Emily
Fellow Bunch-Mates,

I have a nice Brooks Swift (black and copper) I'd like to trade for a
Flyer. I had this on my QB initially, but replaced it with a B.17, which
has been great. Now I'm thinking a sprung B.17 could be even better.

This Swift http://tinyurl.com/7kzupz8 is used - or it's a good deal
softer than a new one out of the box - but it clearly isn't fully broken in
yet. It has been Obenaufed with love and devotion (but not too much!) and
then put back on the parts shelf. Something of a tragedy really. I'd prefer
(never to see it again) that it be used and enjoyed. I'm looking for a
Flyer in similar condition. Color isn't really much of an issue.

Please contact me off-list.

Thanks,
Emily in Charm City
