[RBW] Re: Question off topic mostly

2018-05-19 Thread Eric Douglas

As to the handing of small wheeled folding bikes, I find that tire width
make a huge difference.

I have Schwalbe Big Apple 20 x 2.15 tires on both my Bike Friday Llama and
Swift Folder. No problems at all doing a week long tour or a century on
the Llama.

Both bikes came with more narrow tires, and the handling suffered. As far
as I can tell, the wider tires stabllize the steering,

Re: [RBW] Re: Bike Trainer Thoughts

2018-01-01 Thread Eric Douglas
A couple of additional thoughts:

Yes, trainers are boring. Music or Netflix works for me.

Interval training can make for a short & productive workout.

Trainer specific tires make a difference-- besides saving wear on your road
tires, they are quieter and slip less.

2017-07-10 Thread Eric Douglas

Thanks to all who have helped me downsize my collection. I have one last

summer travels through Montana and Oregon. I’m also selling some of the
parts and accessories I was going to use with the frame.

2017-06-16 Thread Eric Douglas
I'm dropping the asking price to 1300 and will be happy to include a few
components with the deal.

Also, the green and gray frames I've previously listed are still available.

I'm open to offers.

[RBW] FS: S Coupled 700c Bilenky Tourer

2017-06-13 Thread Eric Douglas

Continuing my downsizing, I’m putting my S Coupled 700c Bilenky Tourer
up for sale. When I asked Stephen Bilenky to design it, I more or less
wanted something with a similar ride as my Rivendell Atlantis, but with
fillet brazing instead of ornate lugs, curved seatstays for heel
clearance, a bit more standover and S couplers. It has served me well on
some longish tours (3 weeks unsupported) and many day rides. Stephen build
it with his highest level of finish (“signature”) and the frame new would
cost with couplers about $3800

There are no dents, dings or anything more than a few 2-3 mm chips in the
powdercoat.

The frame includes brazeons for 4 water bottle cages, front and rear racks
and fenders, as well as a pump peg and chain hanger.

Chris King headset installed.

Some measurements:

Clearance for true 45mm tires plus fenders.

72 degree seat tube and head tube angles.

BB Drop 80mm

Seat Tube c-c 53cm

Top tube c-c 57cm

Chainstays: 45.5 cm

26.8 seatpost (included)

For fit reference: I’m 5’ 11”, and have a 84cm PBH.

Photos at:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/147685640@N03/albums/72157682028249332

I also have enough parts to fully build up the bike.

Please feel free to ask questions, make suggestions, etc.

Asking 1400 and open to offers.

Eric Douglas in hot and humid Brooklyn.

I used to use VP Vice pedals but switched to Fyxation Mesa's in nylon

[RBW] Re: On downsizing (and the 1 bike, and 650b)

2017-05-31 Thread Eric Douglas
I just want to second the idea of getting two sets of wheel for that one
bike and *to make sure that the rims have the same width*--will make wheel
changes much easier.

[RBW] Re: FS: Wheelsets and tires, 700c and 26, What's Left

2017-05-16 Thread Eric Douglas

Folks—

Here's what's left. Please feel free to make offers.

I have a bunch of wheelsets and that I’d like put on the block.

I’d be willing to break up a wheelset if just a front or rear is needed.

Shipping for wheels would be via Bike Flights, between $20-40, depending
on how far from NYC.

All rear hubs are 135 spacing.

Mounted tires and cassettes are not included.

2017-05-15 Thread Eric Douglas

Folks—

I have a bunch of wheelsets and that I’d like put on the block.

I’d be willing to break up a wheelset if just a front or rear is needed.

Shipping for wheels would be via Bike Flights, between $20-40, depending
on how far from NYC.

All rear hubs are 135 spacing.

Mounted tires and cassettes are not included.

[RBW] FS: Three Bilenky Frames and Two Surlys

2017-05-10 Thread Eric Douglas

Folks—

I’m now really seriously downsizing my collection and am putting these
five frames up for sale. Asking prices are for the frames and any listed
accessories. The parts installed in the photos, along with the wheels, will
eventually be on sale, but for now I’m hoping to sell the frames first.
However, I’d be willing to leave parts on the frame if so requested and I
have lots of components that I could sell cheap-- pretty much everything
you might need to build up a complete bike.

After I sell the frames, I have a bunch of wheesets, tires and components
that I’ll put on the block.

Please feel free to make offers or ask for parts for the frames.

Shipping would be via Bike Flights, between $40-100, depending on how far
from NYC.

More photos or info available upon request.

Thanks,

Eric Douglas

*Bilenky Custom Frame 1*. Powdercoated deep red with matching front and
rear racks. Fillet brazed, with clearance for 700 x 42 tires with fenders.
The finishing on the fillets is not as smooth as on the other frames, but
is still nicer than tig welding. 1” threaded rollerbearing headset and
Tektro R559 brakes. Rear rack is a Tubus Cargo, front is a Bilenky custom.

Curved chainstays for heel clearance. Braze-ons for racks, fenders, four
water bottles, etc. Ridden a few times. Outside a couple of small paint
chips in perfect condition.

Current price for new frame, headset and racks would be about $2600. Asking
$1200

[RBW] Re: Compass on tour?

2017-05-01 Thread Eric Douglas
 Another date point:

I've done about 1500m touring in Montana and New England on Barlow Passes
EL without a flat--and I weigh more than you do.

On the other hand, if I absolutely wanted to avoid flats I might consider
Schwalbe Marathon Supremes.

[RBW] Re: Riv-ish rides in metro NYC area?

2017-04-22 Thread Eric Douglas
John:

I think most of the best rides are to be had by taking Metro North up to
either Pougkeepsie or Wassaic. Some great quiet country roads to be had up
there.

And of course there's the Crouton Aqueduct Trail...

Feel free to PM me if you want specific route suggestions.

[RBW] Re: Secondary Levers and V-Brakes

2016-05-31 Thread Eric Douglas
I use the levers that David mentions on a couple of my bikes. One set has
seen about 4000 miles of frequent braking and still works perfectly.

No reason to spend more IMO.

Eric

Tektro makes them or made them at some point. Here's an eBay listing for
them:

I vaguely recall Riv stocking these at some point in the past.

I'm in Williamsburg, not retired, but am happy to see people who don't
think that my bike obsession is all that peculiar.
