Re: [RBW] WTT for Nitto seat posts (lugged 26.8, 2-bolt 27.2)
Yes, the lugged seatpost is a two bolt, and I was thinking I'd like to replace it with a plain aluminum S83 two-bolt seatpost. But maybe that's more trouble than it's worth. I had the idea that the fancy lugged seatpost looked funny on the Soma "San Marcos", but a lugged seatpost would look at home on the Appaloosa with its fancy lugwork. That's all. But if there isn't (and never was) a lugged S84 in 26.8mm, as Jay Lonner pointed out, then the whole plan kinda falls apart. I think I should re-evaluate the whole plan. [RBW] Re: Studs for Winter Riding?
I have a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Winter Plus studded tires, 700c x 35mm. This thread reminds me, it's time to mount them. Whenever I ride with them, conditions are varied: rutted ice, slush, packed snow, and snow. The studded tires make it possible, but for me, the handling is kind of squirrely. Fun, but squirrely. [RBW] Re: Appaloosa Build Opinions
Focusing on the question, what kinds of bars do people like on their Appaloosas, I had Nitto *North Road* bars on mine for a while (now, my Grant Petersen-designed Soma *San Marcos* is wearing them). I don't think Nitto is making those bars anymore, but there are lots that are pretty similar, including the Choco and Albastache. I like them a lot. Presently my Appaloosa has Nitto VS touring/butterfly bars. I haven't ridden with them much yet. I took some pics but couldn't figure out how to paste them into this reply. [RBW] 59cm Atlantis frame, for sale or trade
A year ago I bought an RBW Atlantis frame, but never finished building it up. When Alex Wirth posted a "For Sale" notice of his remaining RBW bikes, I fell in love with the Appaloosa, especially the fork crown. Sure, the Atlantis has a lovely fork crown, but it's the same as the crown on my Rivendell-designed Soma San Marcos (bought from fellow lister Nick). Since I already have an example of that crown, I bought the complete Appaloosa. Therefore I want to sell or trade: 2018 Rivendell Atlantis MiT frame, almost-but-not-quite new. 59cm. $1250 plus shipping. Mounted some components on it, but it has never been ridden. As the pictures of the front fork dropouts show, I put a front wheel on, but as the rear dropouts show, there's never been a back wheel on. There are a couple of tiny chips in the paint from shelf-wear. I'll include two unopened bottles of touch-up paint: one bottle of Testors #2135 USSR Naval Interior Blue/Green, and one bottle of Waterford's "Atlantis Green". The Testors #2135 paint is hard to find, some sources say it has been discontinued, but I found a bottle on the big auction site. I will included the following parts: a lightly used Sugino XD2 triple crankset with 175mm arms and one 24 tooth inner ring. A Nitto S83 2-bolt seatpost. I buffed the seatpost and the inside of the seat tube, applied a little anti-seize compound, and the seatpost fits perfectly and adjusts up and down without getting scratched. It tightens up fine without slipping, and without overtightening. The Nitto "Dirt Drop" stem of your choice. Both are in very good condition. I see that I didn't put pictures of them up at the link, but you know what they look like, don't you? Grin (credit to Deacon Patrick for "grin" (TM)) (That's intended to be a friendly joke, in case it isn't clear) A Nitto RM017 "Albastashe" bar OR a Nitto RM016N "Mustache" handlebar. Both are used but not bent or dented. I cleaned the tape residue off of them. The place where the stem clamps is lightly marked on the Albastache, and more heavily marked on the Mustache. Both bars are lightly marked where the brake levers were clamped. I would like a nice lady's-style bike for my wife. She's 5'6" tall, and strongly prefers a step-through, girls'-type bike. I think she would like a Betty Foy (more desirable) or a Clementine. I can't find a sizing chart for the discontinued Betty Foy, but based on the reviews of the bike I have read I think a 55cm or 58cm would fit her. Thank you for reading. If it would make a trade more desirable, I also have two Nitto racks that are surplus to my needs: Nitto "Big Back Rack", Large 33R, never mounted on a bicycle, some shelf wear from being moved around from time to time (mostly it hangs from a dowel in the rafters) [new price $220]. Nitto "Big Front Rack". Some superficial wear, not bent or dented, well cared for. Just checked the RBW website and didn't see this rack available, but the last time I saw it available, it was the same price as the rear rack ($220 new). I'm not sure how to value the racks in trade, if you have a step-through bike to trade, let's try to work something out. https://photos.app.goo.gl/c2bkB4veayXr54R8A -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Re: [RBW] Re: Gotta Hunqapillar question
Nice pics, Deacon Patrick. Some of those brochures you have, Chris L, might be the ones I have. Mine aren't dated tho, and so I wasn't sure which was the final iteration of the prototypes. Neat bike. Joe, I had no idea it was in production so long. I think I missed it because I had some spine issues that were only resolved with a fusion procedure a couple of years ago. As my functionality has returned I've gotten back into bicycling, and bought my first Riv earlier this year (a NOS 2017 Appaloosa). Anyway thanks everyone for the info. [RBW] Gotta Hunqapillar question
I was looking thru some old files at the Hunqapillar fliers/Reader excerpts. Some illustrations show a double top tube in the larger sizes, like the one on (for example) the Joe Appaloosa. One, hiowever, shows an unpainted frame with a diagonal tube between the top and down tubes. I've never seen one in the flesh, or even many pics. [RBW] Re: Issues with slipping bosco bars?
I was test fitting Nitto RM016N "Mustache" handlebars to a Nitto "Dirt Drop" stem, and doing so marred the handlebar's clamp area because the stem was just a little too small for a slip fit. Not much, just a tiny bit, but I thought, "Wait, What?!" Both the bars and stem were prominently marked 26mm and the bars measured 1.024-inches (26mm=1.0236 inches, a nominal 4 ten-thousandths less than my bars measured). Oh well, even Nitto has manufacturing tolerances, or they wouldn't also sell stem spreaders. On the other hand, I need to check out the carbon fiber friction paste others have mentioned, because I have another bar-stem set that slip a little, even though again the numbers match and they should mate. Trouble with the integrated bar-stem system is that I like to fine-tune the tilt of the bars to suit my (no longer mint condition) wrists. Eric, Spokane P.S. Mandatory Rivendell content: these were all for my Appaloosa. On Saturday, October 12, 2019 at 12:37:06 PM UTC-7, jeff perry wrote: > > Is anyone else experiencing slipping Bosco bars? . . . I use seed lac or button lac, dissolved in denatured alcohol of course, to soak the jute twine on my bars. Both darken the twine, which is OK with me. I think it's likely that the blonde lac would not darken the tape as much, but I am confident it will still darken it some. [RBW] Re: daily post ur riv
Greetings! I bought one of Alex Wirth's remaining RBW *Joe Appaloosa* bikes, the 58cm one. It arrived Wednesday, and I changed a couple of parts (saddle, tires, pedals; little things just to make it mine). Today I took it for a few minutes ride, all I had time for, and it was great. It gave me a permagrin. I would not have thought a 22-inch frame would be near big enough for me, but with the big tires the fit is very comfortable (such a short test ride, I know). That's a Makeshifter Canvas Works *Outback* saddlebag (bought from another member of this list). Tomorrow the bike'll get a Nitto R10 saddlebag support rack to help hold it off the tire (that's why the picture shows a green zip tie holding the bag to the seat post). I think the butterscotch-colored frame looks good with the brown Brooks saddle and the brown Little Big Ben tires. At 38mm wide (nominal) the tires aren't so wide, but they're wider than the tires on any of my other bikes. Pressure is about five atmos, and they feel really cushy. I bought an RBW *Atlantis *frame last fall, but have not finished getting parts to build it up. When Alex Wirth posted notice of the remaining RBW bikes since the closure of his shop (sad!) I fell in love with the Appaloosa, especially the fork crown. Sure the Atlantis has a lovely fork crown, but it's the same as the crown on my Grant-designed Soma San Marcos (bought from fellow lister Nick). So I already have an example of that one. Anyway I'll be posting the Atlantis frame "for sale" on this group soon, FYI (59cm). I'll take this bike on a longer shakedown ride in a few days, along one of our local rails-to-trails MUPs. There's one that runs thru Turnbull Wildlife Refuge, and then the pavement runs out and it's just RR ballast (very coarse gravel, albeit nice and level). I want to see how the bike feels on that rough surface. I bet it'll be nice, whereas it's pretty punishing on narrow tires. I hope the link to a groogle pics web address works. I looked for a "sticky" on the best way to post pics to the group, but didn't find it. I will be pleased to learn a better way if you share it with me. [RBW] Re: wtb: Sugino XD2 - Wide/low double 40t x 26t (170mm)
I just happen to have a set, new or so close as makes little difference. Bought them for my Atlantis frame, and put the cranks on the BB. However they have never had pedals threaded into them or had a chain wrapped around the chainrings (My Atlantis doesn't have a rear wheel yet). Would $73, 1/2 the new price, plus shipping be fair? Let me know how to contact you off-list. [RBW] WTT New Sugino XD 40x26 double w/ chainguard for another crankset
I bought a Sugino XD wide/low double 40t x 26t crankset with a chainguard from RBW for the MiT Atlantis I'm building up. 170mm crank arms. Unfortunately I didn't notice that the five arms of the spider are not arranged the way the arms are on every other crankset I have: they're rotated just a little, so that one arm of the spider is in line with (that is, directly behind) the crank arm. I hope that makes sense. I fear that it may not. If you look at the crank page on the Riv website, you'll see what I mean . . . the Silver-brand cranks have the spider arranged one way, and the Sugino cranks are arranged another way. Anyway, the way the Sugino's spider is arranged, the Biopace chainrings I planned to use won't work; they'll be turned 36-degrees from where they were designed to be. I put the cranks on the spindle and finger-tightened the bots, but there has never been a chain wrapped around the chainrings. (Still need wheels & brakes before I can ride this bike.) So, "like new"? "As new"? Just "new"? So, if any of you has a nice crankset with 110mm and 74mm BCD, and would like to trade for my cranks, please contact me. I'd like a triple (so I could swap the outermost chainring for a chainguard). Probably this is a long-shot, but I just thought I'd ask. I'm willing to pay a little cash if you think your cranks are worth more than mine. P.S. Thanks to everyone who suggested ways of finding touch-up paint for the bike. I bought a little bottle of Atlantis Green from Waterford, and a little bottle of Testors Russian Naval Interior from that auction site. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. Thank you for your replies suggesting sources for the paint. I intend to get right on it. [RBW] Atlantis touch-up paint, Testors #2135 Russian Naval Interior
Greetings, I recently bought my first Rivendell, an Atlantis. Wanting to be prepared for the inevitable dings, I have been looking for the appropriate touch-up paint (Testors #2135 Russian Naval Interior Blue-Green). Sadly, it does not seem to be available anymore. HobbyLinc[dot]com says it has been discontinued, and amazon[dot]com says it's out of stock and they don't know whether they'll ever get any more. I checked another model-making supplier who also did not have it (but I don't remember which site it was). Can any of you folks confirm or disfirm that this paint has ben discontinued? My local hobby shop doesn't have any. Have you seen any dusty bottles on the shelf of your local hobby shop? If it truly has become completely unavailable that would be a real bummer.
