[RBW] Re: FYI: Saluki on Ebay

2015-09-16 Thread George Chalekian
Hi Interested Riv People.

I actually posted that bike here on June 24th as I was hoping to "keep it
in the family."
I am the eBay poster, non-bike shop, non-pawn shop, original owner.

Forgive me for the respond-all nature of this post even though it is
addressed to Minh, but I am endeavoring to reach you all en masse as the
auction ends today at 11:15 PM PST just in case anybody is interested.

*The Mystery Of The Stem*
It's a Nitto Periscopa stem which effectively raises the bars to saddle
height, as is Mr. Petersen's penchant.
He picked the stem.
Honestly, I thought it looked somewhat odd when I received the bicycle but
it provided a lovely place to attach a bell and both it and the headset
have performed without incident since day 1.
I picked the Chris King headset – the one "blingy bit" on the bike.
(You'll note the rear hub and the bottom bracket are neither King's nor
Wood's – both of which Mr. Petersen vetoed.)
The original mustache bar (also Nitto) was swapped out for a brand new Velo
Orange Rando bar when my commute changed to include 6 miles of headwind.
No Bianchi's, Veloce's or otherwise, were harmed, nor did anything on this
bicycle ever reside on another bicycle myself excepted of course.

*Scratches Everywhere (Dan, this one's for you)*
Perhaps the comment was in jest, but if not, I'm going to guess that the
highlights running horizontally along the top tube could easily be mistaken
for scratches, but they're not.
They're the consequence of "poor"overhead bedroom lighting.
I think when I finally got around to taking the pix, at my wife's
insistence (n + 1, etc) the sun had already set.
Other than the two conspicuous scrapes beneath the top tube (conspicuous if
you're laying on your back and looking up at bottom of the top tube) that
resulted from a the bike being locked to a rack, not by me let me quickly
add, the paint still has that lovely new-bike clear-coat shine.
Why? Because it lived inside my office when I got to work and inside the
garage when I was home.
My apologies if I sound defensive but, well, I am.
I babied that bike and it's pretty dammit.

*It Really Is A 54.*
See attached pic.

*You're Right John, Japan, Not Taiwan, Is Where The Frame Was Welded.*
(Thanks KevinD2004 for pointing this out if you're haunting this forum.)

*Twin Headlights*
They work. Brilliantly. (I'm sorry for that.) I have them set so the left
light (if you're on the bike) illuminates the road starting about 10 feet
in front of the front tire, and the right beam reaching out farther. The
left light being tilted farther downwards keeps me from blinding oncoming
cars, who used to flash their brights at me before I got things dialed in.
While they can be run independently via the magnetic switches on lights, if
you have both lights on they overlap, creating a bright spot from about 15
to 30 feet in front of the front tire. I got the idea from one of Sacha
White's Rando bikes.

As Bill Lindsey points out the hub is a Schmidt Nabendynamo and it as well
as the lights were ordered from Peter White. The lights are identical
models expect for the housing. I had to replace the housing on the left
(black-rimmed) light because I car-doored it and cracked the housing. The
hazards of living in a garage.

*It's Stolen! (Halfstep Nell, you listening?)*
The stolen bike was reported in Miami. My bike and I live in Honolulu. The
stolen bike was Pea Green. Mine is Pewter, complete with all the fancy
paint touches. See the pics on eBay.

*My eBay Rating Sucks.*
Honestly, you may be right. I've only sold one thing on eBay. I attached a
screen grab of my profile. My hope is the (1) after my name indicates I'm
selling one (1) item?

Want to know anything else, email me directly at georgenc...@gmail.com.

The Salukis are so pretty. ( Liesl) I agree! About six years ago,
at a Rivendell garage sale, Riv was selling a small Saluki frame, brand
new, in a color that looked a lot like the Rambouillet orange. The finish
was opalescent and it glinted gold in the sunlight. (I wasn't
hallucinating, I swear.) About 30 minutes later a woman bought it. She was
 beaming. It was awesome.

Truly, the ride is even more awesome.

 Mostly immaculate.
 $2,500.

This was my daily commuter four times weekly, 21 miles round trip, for
 four years.
Now my commute is 27 steps from the bed to my desk chair.
As a consequence the Saluki, which was a purpose-built as a Commuter /
Rando bike with racks and panniers, has been relegated to grocery status.
Not a dignified life for such a bike so I'm posting it here, and only
 here, first.

So why not Rando or bicycle camp then?

Frankly, not much opportunity on the small island of Oahu.

I say mostly immaculate because there are a few dings in the paint.
Otherwise, the bicycle lived in the house or next to my desk at the
office and still has that original clear coat shine because except for
grocery duty it was never locked up our left outside.
And Grant knows his way away around parts, as you'll see below.
 Everything works flawlessly.
This is one of the smoothest, easiest-riding, most comfortable bikes I've
