[RBW] Re: Let’s say I made my Clem into a “gravel bike”

2023-06-09 Thread Gill
The fact that the OP’s query has already been thoroughly dealt with won’t
dissuade me from chiming in on a subject near and dear (besides, if posters
were not able to beat dead horses this forum would have dissolved years
ago). I own a Clem and ride off road, gravel/trail riding is the fourth
most favorite thing I do in life. I highly encourage others to do it on a
Clem. Opinion, highly subjective, yes, but I do have a kind of data point.
Usually I’m solo but last summer I joined a group ride (my daughter said I
needed to make new friends). This served as a good barometer of how Clem
compared with other “gravel” bikes. My inaugural ride was 19 miles moving
at a good clip, mostly off-road at the end of which another rider smiled
and said “You just ride that thing don’t you“. I translated that to, “turns
out that’s a nice bicycle and my unspoken questioning of its
appropriateness for this ride was unfounded, my apologies“. Worth noting,
unlike Kai’s tough looking Clem mine is a Riv blue step thru and gets no
respect. The qualities that make the Clem a good gravel bike are those that
make it a good bike period: bulletproof frame, long wheel base, stable
handling, gearing that gets you over/through anything you have any business
being on, fits most any tire and uber comfortable. I might add that part of
that comfort comes from the bosco bars – Clems suspension system –a swept
back pliant trail chatter sponge that doesn’t compromise control. So resist
the temptation to immediately switch em out for off-road. Happy trails.

I'm not going to provide specific tire recommendations, but I ride
"gravel" and single-track quiet a bit on my Roadini. I still remember that
time in the 1990s when I was riding with Bridgestone-sponsored cyclist
 Eric
House, and we all showed up in the East Bay proud of ourselves for riding
road bikes on a Grant ride. Grant showed up on a fixie with 35mm tires and
proceeded to outride us all on and off road.

 A few principles:

- The lighter the rider, the smaller the tire you can get away
with. At 140 pounds, I can ride fire roads with 25mm tires (or even 23,
back when Michelin 23s were $10/pop!)
- Tread or no tread doesn't matter as much as rider skill and speed.
- Rider skill cannot be disentangled from bike fit. If the bike
doesn't fit, you will find stuff scary that you can actually ride if
 the
bike fit. I once accidentally raised my seat too high and discovered
 that
stuff I could easily ride suddenly became hard!
- The longer the ride and the steeper the climb, the more important
weight becomes. I can ride big heavy tires if I'm only going to go
 downhill
because a car did most of the work. But if I have to do a lot of
 climbing
(some of which turns into hiking inevitably if you ride in mountainous
areas), the lighter the bike the better off you are.
- You can drop tire pressure far more than most tire pressure
calculators will tell you to. I can run 700x40 tires measuring 38mm at
25psi (the Rene Herse calculator will recommend 33psi) when I'm riding
 off
pavement. On the pavement that same pressure will feel inefficient. I
 go so
far as to carry a pressure gauge to drop tire pressure at the trail
 head
and pump up the tires when I transition off a dirt descent onto
 pavement
for the ride home.
- Bigger tires affect handling - one reason I don't ride with as
big a tire as I can get away with is that you lose some agility.
 Frequently
I find that being able to steer precisely and quickly offsets the
 inability
to plow through some obstacle head on.

What I do notice is that most people don't like to underbike. They will
make comments that I won't be able to do a ride on my 25mm tires and then
be all surprised when I show up and do the ride. But when I'm touring I'm
not going to bring 3 different bikes,

[RBW] Crank Repair Advice

2022-08-07 Thread Gill
Last fall through my own dumbassness I stripped the drive side (silver)
crank on my Clem. LBS tapped/threaded insert put the pedal back on and off
I went with no problems since. I recently asked a bike mechanic if he
thought this was a good, permanent solution and he said, “Dude, if it was
me I’d definitely get a new crank” (said with a slightly raised eyebrow so
I’d know he was serious). So in deciding what to do if anyone here has
experience with this sort of thing or a reasoned opinion I’d be grateful to
hear it.

Decision factors to consider:
I check often and pedal looks/feels fine.
Keeping stuff out of landfills worthy goal
Depedaling (is that a word?) was painful want to avoid going forward.
New cranks don’t come easy

Questions:
How confident should I be with a repair?
Will changing out pedals compromise?
Should I have machine shop redo lbs repair, assuming skilled machinist with
sophisticated machinery will produce best result?
Should I just get a new crank?
Thanks
Gill

I couldn’t find Ram on Riv sizing chart but assume a pbh of 93 would make

Yeah, I second what Joe said. The only thing I’ve managed to break on my

That bike is bulletproof.

Well, they do offer the same bike in a version that will support a

Lovely pictures of a sharp looking bike set in a really nice neck of the
woods. I happen to have just returned from the area and while I enjoyed the
visit I couldn’t shake the feeling everyone in Asheville was way cooler
than me. Your introductory post has served to strengthen this view. Look
forward to future ride reports.

Re: [RBW] Clems: Rivendell, modernized?

2021-11-19 Thread Gill
Kai - Did you ride your Clem out to the end of the breakwater? I’ve never
thought to do that. I’ve also never seen another Riv out in the wild so if
ever you return to glosta give a shout out.
Leah - The color is, “blue-green shot thru with glimmer like sunlight on
seawater”

Re: [RBW] Clems: Rivendell, modernized?

2021-11-17 Thread Gill

So it’s been 15 months. I love the bike and extoll it’s virtues to anyone
who asks (and to some who don’t). It was not love at first sight. I bought
a clem for it’s personality - and price. Comfort and off-road capability
were the inducements. As time passed I came to appreciate clem’s beauty and
now find traditional diamond frame bikes look common and truncated in
comparison. For me the price was a sweet spot. It cost $1650, enough to be
a quality bike but not so much that it causes reluctance to ride the
granite strewn trails of cape ann for fear of dinging it up. Clem does what
you ask of it. Out last week a pedal came off at an inopportune moment
stripping the crank so I push rode it like a scooter 4 miles home and
thought it still rode nice. Can’t offer build inspiration as my clem is
still stock. All I’ve done is reposition the shifters to below the bends
freeing up hand space. This has made a big difference for any sort of
aggressive riding/climbing, works well for long descents too as you can lay
forearms flush on swept back and be comfortably aero.

Maybe I’m just easy to please but for me this is a no-brainer. Whatever you
need, on or off-road, loaded or unloaded Clem Smith is a first ballot hall
of fame bike.

[RBW] Re: Ride Quality Difference between the Atlantis and Clem H?

2021-07-01 Thread Gill
Expectancy bias should perhaps be factored into the equation. The Atlantis
is a fancier more expensive bike and that fact can’t help but influence
perceptions. As someone who has had both bikes I would contend that if you
rode them both blindfolded (admittedly a dicey undertaking) you’d be happy
with either and hard pressed to tell the difference.

I like that picture. It well shows why it’s my favorite time of year to
ride, and doing it on a new Clem has made it all the more enjoyable.
