Re: [RBW] Re: SimpleQuickOneBeam Project - Blue Sky Features - What would you like to see?
I'd buy a singlespeed Riv sight unseen as long as it has the following items in order of importance (1-6 are mandatory): 1. No toe overlap in small sizes (I ride 54cm AHH) 2. Pretty. Lugs. Wet paint. Traditional triangle without too much sloop. Gorgeous forks. 3. Fun. Great handling on paved roads and unpaved surfaces. 4. It must handle fatish tires = Hetres, cross country mountain bike tires, etc. 5. With mudguards. You can't reasonable ride a bike in the northwest, northeast, or southeast with proper mudguards. 6. Water bottle holders = 0 is unacceptable. 7. Storage. Racks both front and back. 8. It can easily be run as a fixie. If it can have a derailleur hanger too, bring it. It needs a broadish audience. 9. I'd be even more interested if I knew it would be limited to a single run! Peace. -Jimmy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: Any Rivsters here commute more than 10 miles one-way? Cold weather tips?
Yes. My commute ranges from 5-25 miles each way in LI/NYC. There has been much good advice shared above, here are my thoughts on the topic: Lights, back-up lights and reflectors. You must be seen. Time in the saddle matters a lot and be prepared to be exposed for twice the amount of your average ride time to account for flats, mechanical failures, etc. Hands - keep them warm. I love Assos winter glove system. It is expensive but they last for years and a tailor can fix em up as the age. Feet - keep them warm. Forget silly cycling shoes with booties and get your self some serious cold weather boots. Try what you currently own before buying new. Eyes - protect them. I think any glasses are fine. Head - cover your ears. Try the hats you own before buying cycling hats, many wool/synthetic hats fit under helmets. Neck gaitor - it helps on cold days. Protect your genitals - I am not joking. The wind hits 'em and they'll numb up quickly. Clothing - start with what you have and experiment. For me, I like wool shirts, a cycling jacket, and Levi's commuter jeans. In the snow - I think commuting around LI/NYC is too dangerous and wait for it to clear. Try lots of things and have fun! -Jimmy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Winter cycling pants
Hey, Clay, Sorry to hear about your bum knee and good luck with the REI stuff. I realize my reply is a tad late to the game but I must plug the Levi's commuter jeans. They a on the hipster skinny side but look like jeans because they are jeans, they stretch so they are comfortable like good cycling bib pants, they are somewhat water proof, the keep me warm and they are reasonably priced. I've worn mine at least 50 times (washed them at least 3 times) and they are great. -Jimmy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Talk about the rules
90/92 rules are complete horseshit. I personally love #12 ( http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/#12 ) and #5 ( http://www.velominati.com/the-rules/#5 ), respectively. I recognize the conflict because if I was a bit harder, I would be able to get by with a single steed, rendering #12 moot. A Hilsen or Bombadil or Atlantis would do the trick. But if I was a bit harder, I'd be able to get by with a Quickbeam or Simple One. But if i was a bit harder, I could...I could go on and on about how different life would be if I worked on #5. But #12 is so much more fun. And easier. -Jimmy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Rivs and Yakima Racks
Agreed. I jam my Hilsen (no lawyer lip) with SKS Longboards onto my Yakima Steelhead. A Boa sounds like a great solution - just make sure it is not loose. It really takes a lot to screw it up. The bigger risk to bikes on roof racks is backing into the garage with the bikes on the top - I'm usually more worried about covering my garage door opener than my bike falling off, or whatever. -Jimmy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] WTB: A. Homer Hilsen 55cm, 700c wheel size. FF only
Choices. They are wonderful but come with the cost of having to decide. Lucky for you that all the choices sound like winners. Regarding the 55cm/700c Hilsen, I agree that they are available, Keven at Riv offered it as an anternative to the 54cm/650b, which i choose instead. I suspect the 55cm would be better in a dry climate where mudguards are not required, 700c with mudguards would almost certainly introduce toe overlap. As for the Hislen vs. Sam. Based on your intended use, either would be excellent, as would many much lesser bikes. It sounds like emotion will drive your decision more than reason. For me, the Hilsen wins every time. -Jimmy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Practical differences - SON vs Shimano Dyno hub?
I have three bikes with SON hubs, a Brompton with 11k+ miles, a Bike Friday and a Rivendell AHH each with a couple thousand miles. I ride with my lights on day and night so cannot tell if there is material drag or not. My SON hubs have performed flawlessly. I also have a Shimano Alfine dynamo hub on my relatively low mileage Surly Big Dummy, it works fine except the connector sucks. I see that others praise the single connector but it is a cheap piece of plastic (shit) that has problems. Trying to decide between SON and a Shimano is a lot like trying to decide between a BMW and a Honda - the BMW is nicer but you pay a lot of for each incremental improvement. I'd take a Shimano dynamo over no dynamo any day of the week. And if I was a rational consumer I would probably own only Shimano dynamo hubs. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Riding without a computer
When I got my AHH last year I decided to order it as recommended by the chef, Keven was the chef in my case. As such it was my first bike without computer and with flat pedals, a basket, friction shifting and cloth tape. The lack of a computer may have reduced my fitness because I am much less likely to push really hard to go fast but I enjoy riding more without a computer than with one, I have removed the computers from all of my other bikes. I love the basket, every bike should have one. Friction shifting is fine. I dig the cloth tape. I still prefer being clipped-in, especially in the rain and snow, but I still ride my Riv with flat pedals. -Jimmy -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: OT: your opinion of the Bridgestone RB-T?
Finding and buying and fixing old bikes is a hobby, it as a very different one than riding bikes. Riding a bike can be transportation, exercise, a hobby or any combination but it is very different than finding, buying and fixing bikes. If your girlfriend wants something cool to ride, I'd focus on finding a bike will best suite that need. There are tons of high quality bikes being manufactured today that are amazing and affordable from big brands like Trek and Specialized to Breezer and Jamis to Linus and Public. They often come with racks, fatish tires, mudguards and sometimes even lights. Many are made of steel and they ride great and are very reliable. A reliable bike will get ridden way more than an old artfully crafted lugged beauty that needs constant TLC. [RBW] Beautiful Sam at Bikeworks NYC
I spied my first look at a beautiful Sam Hillborne while visiting Bikeworks NYC this afternoon. Bikeworks NYC (http://bikecult.com/works/) had a new Sam with double top tube, albatross bars, bar end shifters and cork grips on display. It was only the 3rd Rivendell I have seen up close, the first being my AHH, the second an Atlantis belonging to a guy from Pittsburgh who was in NYC for the 5-borough bike tour. I had to buy my AHH having never seen a Rivendell, so if anyone is in the market, I highly suggest stopping by to see the Sam in person. [RBW] Re: lights
Battery versus generator - I hate to worry about charging or replacing batteries, so i choose to use dynohub generators. If money is no object, SON Dynohubs look and perform the best, period. However, on one of my bikes that only gets occasional use, I have a Shimano Alfine dynohub and it works fine. I know there are a ton of high quality battery options available but I am not familiar with any of them. I only use cheap battery lights for back-up purposes. Front lights - I have used both halogen and LED headlamps. LED lamps are way better. Schmidt Edelux - Very bright, great coverage. My favorite. Supernova E3 - Looks great but I prefer the Edelux. The E3 doesn't seem as bright as the Edelux and it is big and weighs a ton and cost a lot. BM Lumotec IQ Fly Senso Plus - it pretty much sucks in comparison to the 2 lights above. Rear lights: Supernova taillight is my favorite but must be coupled with the Supernova E3 headlight. BM Toplight Line Pluse is my second favorite BM 4D Toplight Senso Multi is my least favorite. [RBW] Taking the plunge with A. Homer Hilsen
Hey, all, I've been reading RBW Owners Bunch for a couple of weeks and this is my first post. I took the plunge and ordered a Rivendell, it arrived a couple of weeks ago. A 54cm AHH with 650B wheels. A bicycle has been part of my commute for the past 10 years or so. I have several typical commutes that include various combinations of bicycle and Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). My other commuting bikes are: - 1955 Phillips 3-speed; Round-trip from home to LIRR station, 1 mile each way. - Brompton - 1 mile ride to LIRR, 5 mile ride in NYC to office - reverse on the way home. - Bike Friday New World Tourist - I use this for 25 mile commute in the morning - 5 miles from office to LIRR in evening. - Merlin Agilis - Round-trip from LI to NYC 25 miles each way. (retired) - Rivendell A. Homer Hilsen - to replace the Merlin for the round-trip commute. After switching between the Merlin than the BF regularly I began to notice that the Merlin took more effort to ride than the BF - I suspect it was a combination of the aggressive riding position coupled with carrying a large backpack for 25 miles - it was brutal. I came to favor the BF over the Merlin for the long commute. So I started researching full-sized bike to replace the Merlin and came upon Rivendell - I decide to order one and give it a try. I'm amazed at how well the Rivendell rides, it is remarkably comfortable, it is fast, it is maneuverable - what is the reason? is it the fat tires? the use of steel and lugs? the geometry? the forks? I have no clue but if everyone had a bike that rides like my Rivendell, they would all ride a lot more often. Here is a pic from my maiden voyage taken somewhere in Brooklyn. https://picasaweb.google.com/115956293745068682386/July12012?authkey=Gv1sRgCLO0i4yY7qyu3wE#5760362540987289154 BTW - Keven also talked me into the $20 poster (I wasn't exactly a hard sell) - It is pretty cool and an outrageous deal for real art.
