Wheels are polished silver Velocity A23 rims (32h front and rear). Front is laced 2x with double-butted Wheelsmith spokes to a Shutter Precision PV8 Dynamo hub. The rear is laced 3x with double-butted Wheelsmith spokes to a White Industries T11 hub (130mm. 9-11s Shimano Compatible). Both hubs are polished silver and spokes and nipples are silver, as well. RE: [RBW] Re: Tire trouble puzzlement
Hi Kieran, On the A23, what are you using for a rim strip? There seems to be some issues on tubeless ready rims when using thicker rim strips like Velox. I'd recommend using 2 layers of Stan's tape and then trying again. We have several bikes in our rental queue with A23s and have had no issues mounting up tires. On my own A23s I have Compass Stampede Pass tires and Gran Bois Cerf Green Label tires mounted and all went on seemlessly when using the Stan's tape. My next try was going to be on a Synergy wheel I have, but it sounds like this type of behaviour happens on those as well. Is the lumpy supple tire syndrome something that people just deal with and/or have simply accepted that soapy water, 10 minutes of massaging and adjusting, etc. are what's needed to put a tire on? KJ On Thursday, June 18, 2015 at 2:45:25 PM UTC-4, Michael Hechmer wrote:I am getting a thumping vibration from a front wheel at speeds above 25mph. The wheel is nearly new with a White hub and Synergy rim. The tire is a brand new Pari-Moto. It was on my converted Trek 620. I can't see any obvious cause and here's what I've done so far. A visual inspection of the tire and wheel didn't show any obvious anomalies, so I checked the head set and decided to tighten it just a bit. That didn't have any noticeable affect on the thump. Then I swapped wheels with my Saluki, which also has pari-moto tires. Rode both bikes over the same short, hilly course. The thump definitely went with the wheel. Next I took the tire off. Pari-motos go on very easily but are hard to get straight.. I put the wheel in my little Minoura wheel stand. It is perfectly round and nearly perfectly true. I carefully remounted the tire, working to get it as perfectly straight as I can. Then I put the wheel and tire up on the stand. The tire moves in and out about 2-3 mm away from the side wall and about 2-3 mm away from round. I retested it and still got the high speed vibration. ?? RE: [RBW] loaded handling question
David, My experience with a Hilsen with small front rack and small front bag on it, indicates that Riv-designed bikes are not really good handlers with front loads. It shimmied like crazy! The other items may have contributed, but my guess is the stuff on the front had more to do with the shimmy. RE: [RBW] Re: Friday morning ride, Carlsbad (now Tires and Rims)
I guess the consensus on this list is that 15-17mph for a 50+ mile ride would be considered a fast pace. Good to know as calling a ride moderate , slow, fast when you are trying to organized something is crucial. It's good to let people know what to expect. I learned this with the one person who joined me on Friday. I told him we'd do the moderate, 16-17mph, pace and after 20 miles, he was cooked. Though to his defense, we rode eastward from Carlsbad and quickly found ourselves in +90F heat, which was a little much to ask for a native from Ontario on vacation. His body was not quite acclimated. He sagged in thanks to his wife, and I continued on for a 56mile round trip with 2500ft of climbing and right on 15.8mph average. We went out to Bonsall and Lawrence Welk Resort (for those who know the area) and I re-discovered the incredible ride of the Gran Bois Cerf (green label) tires. Might have to try the Compass Extralight version. Over rough chip seal and rutted roads, these tires simply soak it all up and help to isolate you from the road vibrations. I have them mounted on the Pacenti SL23 rims and they measure a hair over 30mm wide on these rims. Typical pressures are 80-85psi front and 85-90psi rear for my 190lb body. Have a great Sunday everyone! RE: [RBW] Bikes and Recovering from shoulder surgery
Hi Jim, My brother had a partial shoulder replacement after a hit and run. It was a long haul recovery process and he was itching to get on his bike. He ended up purchasing a recumbent trike (Terra Trike, if memory serves) that he rode a lot and did several long-distance rides on, including a double century. The best part was that he bought it used and sold it for the same price he bought it. He was glad to not have to ride it anymore, but he was also glad to have had the option while he was rehabbing. He suspects I have been walking around with a torn labrum in my left shoulder for some time (probably initially due to a bike wreck) but worsened the injury moving oak logs (for firewood) mid-fall. For those who know the jargon, it's a SLAP tear. Searching for info about cycling and recovery from this kind of surgery has left me a bit blue. It looks like 4-6 weeks in a sling, then very slow 4-6 months to full use. Ironically, I'd just received a 54cm Sam Hillborne frame the week I tore it. The frame is now fully built and sits unused. My questions are: Has anyone on the list had the surgery and, if so, what was your recovery like? And, what's the best wisdom from the group regarding cycling and recovery from SLAP repairs? RE: [RBW] Tubeless Rims for Oregon Outback
We've been building some tubeless clincher wheelsets using the Pacenti SL23 and the Velocity A23 rims and have had great luck with mounting the tires and seating them. We do use a compressor, however, and we use the Orange Seal tubeless sealant. The best thing about the Orange Seal is that, in general, the tires seat and seal on the first try. We've literally gotten them up to pressure, spun the wheels a few times to spread the sealant, put the wheel down and come back a day later to find them at nearly the same pressure as we've left them. With Stan's and Slime tubeless sealants, we've had problems getting a good seal at times. We would not recommend using a non-tubeless tire for a tubeless set up for road use. YMMV, Joe Joe Bartoe Synaptic Cycles Bicycle Rentals, Inc. email: j...@synapticcycles.com website: www.synapticcycles.com Twitter: @synapticcycles phone: 949-374-6079 Date: Mon, 9 Feb 2015 10:53:53 -0800 From: cyclotour...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: Re: [RBW] Tubeless Rims for Oregon Outback Yes, compressors are most helpful. Even then it can still be a pain IMHO. I had a chance to buy a second wheelset to set up tubeless, but passed on it. I've never had a set come off from inactivity. I did have a nasty burp out on the trails that sent me down pretty hard, glad to have not broken my scapula in the process. That was with running non-tubeless ready tires on Stans rims, which I have never done since then! On Monday, February 9, 2015 at 9:34:17 AM UTC-8, Jim M. wrote:On Monday, February 9, 2015 at 5:12:46 AM UTC-8, Jim Bronson wrote:They also said that if you don't ride them regularly, it's better to use tubes because the tire will come off the bead, which relates to needing (again) to have an air compressor to seat. A compressor plus soapy water makes the job pretty easy. As to the tire coming off the bead, I've rarely had that happen, even if the wheel sits long enough to go flat. Once the bead is set, it tends to stay. If it's a bike you don't ride regularly, then pump them up once a month. Heck, I do that even for tubed tires that don't get ridden much. As mentioned by others, not all tires will work, and not all rims will work, but if you use both tires and rims designed for tubeless, it's pretty foolproof. I've only used tubeless rims, but I've successfully used several tires tubeless that aren't specified tubeless ready. jim mwc ca -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. RE: [RBW] Tubeless Rims for Oregon Outback
Hi Jim, My primary reluctance for using non-tubeless-specific tires set up as tubeless for road use is the higher tire pressures. This may not be as big an issue when using higher volume tires like the Hetre, where you can run them at lower pressures. This is why MTB tubeless can often be done using non-tubeless clincher tires. You're really relying on the tire bead/rim interface to hold the tire in place and to create an airtight seal. Disruption of that could lead to a catastrophic loss of tire pressure, and more importantly, allow the bead to break free and roll the tire off the rim. RE: [RBW] Tubeless Rims for Oregon Outback
Hi Brian, The Velocity A23 and the Pacenti SL23 are wonderful choices for you. The SL23 are available in satin silver and black, but the silver is not available currently. The A23 has a nice polished option. I currently have some of these in stock in 24h, 28h, and 32h, if interested. Both the A23 and SL23 have built up really nicely for us and we've been really happy with how they've held up. We've also built up wheels with the SL25 (the disc version of the SL23) with really good results. You can't go wrong with either rim. Both are wide and tubeless compatible. We've been using the Orange Seal tubeless sealant that claims to seal punctures up to 1/4 of an inch. We haven't tested that, but it has worked really well on punctures that would kill tires using Slime or Stan's. The plan is to use them on some bikepacking overnights to get ready for the Oregon Outback. I just realized that I let me Synergy rims get a bit worn via too much braking, not enough pad changing. I now have my overworn pads on my bench to remind me to *check my brake pads regularly*. Since I also have some spoke cracking on the OC rim, I figure it's time to get some new rims for the summer. The Pacenti SL23s seem like a good tubeless rim to try - or perhaps the Velocity A23s. RE: [RBW] Re: struggling with my B-17's
FWIW - I have tried both the SA and the Rivet saddles and the SA, for me is soft and sags a ton. Adjusting it did little to improve it and I absolutely hated it. The leather on the Rivet is more substantial and does not sag the way the SA does. If anything, one might be tempted to de-tension the Rivet when first riding it. Also, from an aesthetic point of view, the Rivet makes the SA look like it was made by a pre-school kid. The Rivet saddles are simply better looking and better made. I have no ties to either company. I see from looking at their website that the present models have a longer adjustment bolt and that they will sell you a longer bolt for your older models. I may do that when I get to the end, but so far, the saddles have stabilized. One thing that I did was to install laces and that has done two things. First, the saddle doesn't splay out and rub my thighs. Second, I think it contributes to reduce the sag caused by stretching, and maybe that's why I've not had any issues after break-in. RE: [RBW] shipping a bike to Karme Choling
Hi Bo, I have used the Air Caddy system to ship bikes with very good results. The bike is put into the box, attached to a fork mount. All you have to do at the back end is reattach the front wheel, rotate the handlebars into position, and re-insert the seatpost and tighten it down. I've shipped 3 bikes this way now with no issues. You can buy the Air Caddy and even get good pricing on shipping through this site: http://www.shipbikes.com/Whatis.html Hope that helps, Joe Joe Bartoe Synaptic Cycles Bicycle Rentals, Inc. email: j...@synapticcycles.com website: www.synapticcycles.com Twitter: @synapticcycles phone: 949-374-6079 Date: Sun, 14 Jul 2013 08:36:55 -0700 From: borus...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] shipping a bike to Karme Choling My main bicycling buddy Anne is off to the Buddhist Center in St Johnsbury Vt for two years. She flies in for August and then drives from Washington State at the end of September. Anne comes into Hanover NH by bus and then gets picked up by car. We were thinking of packing and shipping her Miyata 1000 before she flies so she would have it for August and beyond. The bike shops in the area get stunningly bad reviews. Peter White is two hours away and two hours back. It wont kill Anne to do without her bike for August but if there is a solution it would be nice for her to have. RE: [RBW] Re: Anyone have recommendations for a good Electrolyte solution.
Hi Ted, I have been using Nuun and Camelbak Elixir with good results. Both contain no sugar and have good taste. Nuun pink lemonade is somewhat light and pleasant tasting and is one of my favorites. I also use the fruit punch and cola flavors. Cola has some caffeine in it so I tend to use it only on longer rides and somewhat sparingly. On rides greater than 60 miles, I also use Hammer Perpetuem with some added endurolytes powder and a bit of Hammer Gel for flavoring. Alternating the Nuun/CB Elixir with the Perpetuem mix really keeps my tendency as dehydration and cramping at bay. RE: [RBW] Grand Bois Cerf Green Label Tires
Michael, The Roly-Poly is a very nice tire, but for me it feels sluggish and slow in comparison. I actually had a better experience with the Ruffy Tuffy than the Roly-Poly. The Grand Bois Cerf has become my favorite tire. The green label on a set of Hed wheels actually measures 29C and is a nice round tire that feels incredible sure footed when cornering. I had a set of 26C Cerfs on my Davidson (doesn't really fit the 28C ones) and the 28C on my Calfee Tetra Pro Adventure. I've tried the Parigi-Roubaix, but like the Cerf better. If flat resistance is factor, you may want to read up on that. Some have reported problems, but I've had very few issues. RE: [RBW] Re: What is the best 28-30 mm 700c tire for fast riding on pavement?
I commuted and did double centuries on the Grand Bois Cerf green labels for about a year. I had great luck with them. Light, fast, and pretty puncture resistant. For me. Other people may differ in their opinion, but I find that if I unweight my saddle going over stuff, keep and eye out and avoid stuff, and occasionally inspect the tires that they serve me well. Great Question. It's the same question I posted at the end of the Where does the Rambouillet fit into the Rivendell Line Thread. It must haven't gotten lost in the shuffle. I need new tires for my Ram, so I'm tuned in to this question. But it depends what you mean by best. Jan Heine clearly defines that as lowest rolling resistance and fastest. GP means, decent speed and most comfortable. A commuter, who isn't daft in the head, means most puncture resistant. I really appreciate a light, fast responsive bike and the ride it gives me; but the reality is that VT road shoulders have miles of poor pavement (and even where the pavement is good it might be covered in dried cow poop!) so I want the fastest tire that doesn't feel agonizing after and hour of rough road riding. JB's, wins hands down in the +30 category; but what's the best choice in the 3o and under arena? Some have commented on puncture resistance, which I take to mean resistance to sharp objects, but what about the comfort-speed continuum on less than perfect pavement? RE: [RBW] Re: New chain skipping
That would be the answer. Replacing a worn chain resulting in skipping should always make you think worn cassette. If no amount of adjusting dials it in, it's time for a new cassette. I didn't see the original thread here, but if you're using a master link, make sure it's installed properly. If it isn't seated properly, it may be shorter than it should be at that link. If you have a Wipperman link, there's an orientation that you need to worry about. Barring that, new cassette. Both of those answers are probably the two most likely suspects. RE: [RBW] SH/AHH sizing question
Hi Suraj, Here's a link to my Riv Custom Spec sheet: http://thesaltycyclist.blogspot.com/2009/07/rivendell-road-spec-sheet.html It came out as a 63.5cm bike with 60cm top tube (measured horizontally, but actual length is longer due to slight upslope). I also had a A Homer Hilsen in 63cm that fit very well. As you can see on the spec sheet, I have a pbh just under 93cm and I am the same height as you. If anything, you are smidge shorter in the upper body, but not by much. Given my experience on the 63cm AHH, which you can see built up for me here (http://thesaltycyclist.blogspot.com/2010/01/commutin-rig-homer-hilsen.html), I would recommend a 64 only if you planned on having high handlebars. That would be the only way to get the distance to the bars to be comfortable for you. If you like your handlebars lower than the saddle (mine are always about 4cm below my saddle), I'd recommend going down one size than recommended to 63cm. In the pic of my AHH, the stem has no rise and is 10cm in length (for reference). These are all relative, of course. Think about how you'll be riding the bike and how you'd want it set up and decide accordingly. Hope that helps, Joe PS- I can't find the specs for the 60cm Hillborne but I'm guessing it would be an odd fit for you based on the measurements provided. Joe Bartoe Synaptic Cycles Bicycle Rentals, Inc. email: j...@synapticcycles.com website: www.synapticcycles.com Twitter: @synapticcycles phone: 949-374-6079 Date: Sat, 25 Feb 2012 11:14:48 -0800 Subject: [RBW] SH/AHH sizing question From: suraj.shanmu...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Hello all, I live in Australia and am thinking of picking up a Riv, either a Hillborne or a Hilsen. Given shipping issues etc. I'm sweating over picking the right sized frame. My PBH is 94cm but my height is only 186cm ie. I have a pretty long bottom half and short top half. The folks at Riv are suggesting that I should be looking at a 64cm Hillborne or a 65cm Hilsen. Now this to me seems massive, as I seem to be comfortable on an effective top tube length of about 570mm on a standard racing bike (56-68cm frame). Any top tube past 580mm and I feel like its a bit of a stretch. I'm therefore thinking of maybe a smaller Hilsen (?63) or a 60cm Hillborne. I do appreciate that the bars will be higher thus shortening the distance to handlebars but still it seems like those frames are a bit stretched out for me. Anyone with a similar build who has had experiences positive or negative with Riv sizing? Could you provide some advice? When I spoke to Jon earlier, he was unsure about the walk and how he would feel about doing it at a time when his loss is so fresh. He was expressing his uncertainty about how a walk (or a ride or any such event) would do anything to raise money for anything, even Cancer research. I only bring this up because I am unsure how many of you know about the walk and the way to pledge money to Jon and the other people walking in honor of Auggie. In my experience, yes, the SRAM chains work better on SRAM drivetrains than on Shimano drivetrains. Best regards, Doug Way Roadeo and Atlantis Under 1.5 feet of snow in Boulder, CO On 12/22/11 5:35 PM, Rex Kerr wrote: Ever since building up my AHH I've been struggling with mis-shifts and noise in the drivetrain, details of which I've posted here a few times. I tried everything I could think of... even took it to Riv HQ to ask for help... everything that'd make it better would only make it slightly better, and half of that was probably placebo. I'd tried everything that came to mind, except for one simple thing [I'd already tried the complex stuff first]... I didn't try this one simple thing because I didn't have a compatible one in my parts inventory [yes, I have a parts inventory in my home shop] to try, and didn't want to take one off another bike... So, I suffered and suffered and lost the best ~1000 miles of my bike to this pain [no idea exactly how many miles, no speedo]... I really should have just bought another part, since it's a wear part and all, but whatever... So, last night while out cleaning the drivetrain (since it'd gotten particularly bad on my last ride home, so bad that I almost wanted to get off and walk home). I finally just did it... I was hesitant, because I didn't want to put a worn one and wear out my other newer parts, but I measured the other bike's **CHAIN** for wear, and it was within tolerance, so I swapped them... IT'S SILENT NOW!!! I didn't miss a single shift on the way to work this morning, and it was nearly silent!!! So question... how does a brand new PC971 chain perform so poorly? I've never had such problems with SRAM chains before, and always preferred them over Shimano chains. The one that I swapped was a KMC Z-9000 that I'd purchased a number of years ago from a shop that was selling new OE pulls for $4 (I wish now that I'd taken their entire inventory!! What a deal!)... what could be wrong that would make it perform so poorly? It's been a long time, so I probably can't get my money back from the LBS where I bought it, but it'd be nice to know what to look for in the future! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. RE: [RBW] A recalibrated subconscious
Reminds me of those times when I'm walking and here something behind me and instinctively look to the left upper corner of my sunglasses to check my rearview mirror. I hate it when that happens! Joe Joe Bartoe Synaptic Cycles Bicycle Rentals, Inc. email: j...@synapticcycles.com website: www.synapticcycles.com Twitter: @synapticcycles phone: 949-374-6079 Subject: [RBW] A recalibrated subconscious From: jimcwar...@earthlink.net Date: Sun, 11 Dec 2011 09:15:51 -0800 To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com I have a little Rivendell saddlebag story to tell. I've been commuting by bicycle with extreme regularity for awhile now. Yesterday, instead of riding a bike I was driving my backup vehicle (an automobile), and before getting into the car for my errand, I threw some essential items into the Rivendell saddlebag (that's usually on my bike) and put that in the back seat of the car. A few minutes into my drive, without consciously realizing what I was doing, I reached my arm back to the saddlebag in the back seat to make sure that I had closed the rear of it. You see, you have to do that when you are traveling on your vehicle to make sure the stuff in the saddlebag doesn't fall out just in case you carelessly forgot to close it. I came to my senses and realized what I was doing (the car is not a convertible so there was no danger even if saddlebag was open), and then I smiled, knowing that my subconscious is now calibrated to commuting by bicycle as the norm. -Jim W. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Hi Everyone-Jon and Cheryl Grant have chosen a Cure Search as a place that they'd like donations to go in Auggie Grant's name. Cure Search is an organization that funds and supports children’s cancer research and provides information and resources to those affected by children’s cancer. You can find a link here to donate: http://www.curesearch.org/ I will gladly accept small donations via my PayPal account (jbar...@hotmail.com) and then forward the total sum to Cure Search in Auggie's name if that is easier for people. [RBW] Jon Grant
Hi Everyone, Sadly, I have heartbreaking news about Jon's son, Auggie. From the Caring Bridge website for Auggie: At 4:15 a.m., Monday, December 5, 2011, we lost our son and brother, Augusto Frederic Grant. He fought valiantly, backed by the best doctors using the latest medicines and the most advanced machines at a first-class facility, supported by a worldwide phalanx of prayer warriors. But in the face of overwhelming odds, none of it was enough. He went down swinging. We are heartbroken. The family would like to remain undisturbed for the rest of today, December 5, 2011. Thanks to everyone who has supported Jon and his family during the past few days through your thoughts and prayers. Please, keep them in your thoughts and prayers now more than ever. Hi Everyone, As some of you may or may not know, one of the regular contributors to this list Jon Papa Grant is a graphic illustrator extraordinaire who has worked on the graphics that many of us see on the Rivendell bikes-Riv Customs, Bleriot, etc. Recently, he has done several drawings of classic bicycle components and has made prints of them. I had agreed to help him out with the sale of these by listing them on my site and taking a modest fee for the sale of each. As we prepared for the announcement, he learned that his son is very sick and is now put in a position where raising some cash is vital. For this reason, I am asking you to take a look at the pics and if there's interest to purchase some of his pieces to please do so. I have decided that any and all money raised from the sale of his prints will go directly to Jon and his family. I will not be taking anything off the top. You can see the pictures and descriptions in my shop here: http://shop.synapticcycles.com/?cat=34 Please, respect Jon's privacy during this time and don't send tons of email his way. However in my opinion it's not too extreme to say the same thing about provision for carrying cargo, however small (and not just water bottles). NOT that there's anything wrong with toys(!)- but I think bicycles deserve a better purpose at least once in their lifetimes. I say: I've run into many a racer and roadie that uses their high end road bike as their commuter vehicle. In fact, so have I. For 3 years, I commuted 4 days a week on average on my road bike, 15-20 miles each way. I used a courier bag or backpack, transporting my clothing and lunch each day, sometimes my laptop as well. When I get out for rides on the weekend, it's nice to feel unencumbered. The bike feels lighter and faster that way. So, my road bikes are not just toys but transportation. Gloriously fast transportation. They are a tool that I use to get outside and stay fit. The idea that I somehow need to attach bags and racks to get usefulness out of my bike is ridiculous. There are times when it is appropriate, but even then I have a feeling that most on this list go a bit overboard. RE: [RBW] Re: New York Times Article (Sport Grows, and Grows More Perilous)
Okay, now. The idea that carbon bikes can only take skinny tires and are uncomfortable and are only for racing is SOO last year! Take a look here at my Calfee Adventure: https://www.facebook.com/pages/Synaptic-Cycles/124901454233407#!/media/set/?set=a.221224974601054.57299.124901454233407type=1 The pic shows it fendered up with 28C Conti GP 4 seasons, but 30C tires will fit under the fenders. I could probably get a 32c tire in the bike without fenders, but have not tried yet. This same bike can be made for disc brakes as well, this increasing your ability to fit larger tires. Calfee has tweaked the geometry and made it a bit longer while adjusting frame angles a tad. The end result is a fast, stable bike that is comfortable and takes full advantage of the carbon material in minimizing road vibration. I can honestly say that this bike rides at least as well as my old Riv Road did (gasp!), and in some ways it does things better. Anyone in the OC is welcome to give my ride a try if your tall enough to ride the 62cm frame. Just don't blame me if you like it better than your current steel bike. RE: [RBW] Re: New York Times Article (Sport Grows, and Grows More Perilous)
Patrick Moore asked about my Calfee: That is very nice; a custom? If it takes 32s it has as much or almost as much clearance as my two custom Rivs. Why did you choose CF for such a bike (fenders, presumable more than minimal loads)? Ie, what advantage does it have? Calfee has three frame levels (Luna, Tetra, and Dragonfly) and in each one you can get standard geometry or full custom. They are now offering the Adventure version of each frame. The upgrades are $225 extra, but I find that it makes the bike more stable as well as more versatile. I chose the bike because I am a Calfee dealer and I also use them as my main rental bike, and I wanted to have a nice light bike that can handle larger tires, not beat me up, yet still be fast enough to do double centuries on. I rode one of my rentals for a bit and realized that the carbon was a good thing. I felt that it did a good jhob of not beating me up on rides and I would feel fresher longer. The Advneture version is even better at this with the larger tires and the adjusted geometry. I've never been one to put racks on a bike (Calfee can put rack mounts on the bike for you as well, however) or hang huge saddlebags on it. I make use of the drop bags and will throw on a banana bag if I need some storage space and a place to lash extra clothes to. I chose the SRAM Force drivetrain for its versatility as well. I have an Apex rear derailleur and an 11/32 cassette that I can put on the bike and have a 34/32 low gear which gets me up most anything. Right now, SRAM is the only major component maker whose newest road groups are compatible with the mountain groups. If I wanted, I could out and one of the SRAM mountain derailleurs and cassettes on the bike and get even lower gearing. RE: [RBW] Re: New York Times Article (Sport Grows, and Grows More Perilous)
Patrick, We weighed it fully built up sans pedals when it arrived and it weighed 17.4 lbs. I haven't weight it with the fenders so can't comment. Remember, this is a 62cm bike so it's a difficult comparison. I imagine a 56cm bike would weigh closer to 17 lbs. I don't know the numbers on a steel bike, but would imagine it would weigh in the 22-24lb range so you'd save 4-7lbs depending on the size of the bike and the build. RE: [RBW] My Sam is skipping and/or ghost shifting
Is the cassette or freewheel used or is it relatively new? There are many people who tend to have a preferred gear and will wear that one out before the rest. If it's happening in only one cog, that may be the problem. One way to check is to change out the cassette or freewheel without doing adjusting anything else and see if it goes away. Good luck, Joe Joe Bartoe Synaptic Cycles Bicycle Rentals, Inc. email: j...@synapticcycles.com website: www.synapticcycles.com Twitter: @synapticcycles phone: 949-374-6079 Date: Mon, 19 Sep 2011 12:04:46 -0700 Subject: [RBW] My Sam is skipping and/or ghost shifting From: robin...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Sheldon Brown says skipping is chain wear and ghost shifting is cable friction under the BB. I checked / treated for both. Jumped at the chance to try my new Park chain wear checker. A little grease on the cable guide. Just like the man said. No dice. It happens quite a lot, mostly and perhaps only in my 15 tooth cog. Not life threatening but certainly an annoyance. Rear D is also new, long cage Shimano, nothing special but seems to work fine otherwise. Chain tension and chain line seem OK. Ideas, anyone? RE: [RBW] Re: How Much Difference Would Different Wheels/Tires Make
About a year and a half ago, I decided to try the Grand Bois Cypres tires on my road bike. I had a regular commute that I knew very well and would ride it consistently around the same pace every day. After switching the Grand Bois, there was a noticeable increase in average speed of my commutes. I was consistently 0.25 top 0.5 mph quicker with the Grand Bois tires than I was on the tires they replaced, Specialized Roubaix Pros. This wasn't a big change in weight, but was likely due to a significant decrease in rolling resistance. Tires make a big difference so don't be too quick to judge. YMMV, Joe Joe Bartoe Synaptic Cycles Bicycle Rentals, Inc. email: j...@synapticcycles.com website: www.synapticcycles.com Twitter: @synapticcycles phone: 949-374-6079 Date: Fri, 5 Aug 2011 20:17:25 -0700 From: fie...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com Subject: [RBW] Re: How Much Difference Would Different Wheels/Tires Make On Friday, August 5, 2011 5:57:02 PM UTC-4, Solomander wrote:I have an AHH snip I wouldn't mind it if the bike was a bit quicker- especially on hills. snip What do you think? [RBW] OT Kinda: Bikes for kids pledge drive
Hi Everyone, I have been partnering up with a few people to figure out a way to get 100 bikes and helmets for the Christmas at the Club event that is held every December at the Santa Ana Boys and Girls Club. Over the past few years, the number of bikes that have been given away each year has dropped dramatically and we are trying to make sure that we can get at least 100 kids on bikes this year. If you would like to donate to this cause, please use this link to find and print out the pledge card: http://tinyurl.com/3kos6qe Also, please pass this along to others. This is a great cause and getting kids on bikes is near and dear to all our hearts! [RBW] OT: Need advice on hauling lots of bikes
Hi everyone, I am planning an event where I will need to haul 16 bikes to a site for a ride and need some advice on just how to do that. I was thinking of renting a moving van, truck, or trailer. The questions that come to mind are: (1) how big a van, truck, or trailer will I need?; and (2) what's the best way to secure and protect the bikes from damage during transport? The bikes will be a mix of flat bar road bikes, city/commuter bikes and a few road bikes, if that makes a difference in the discussion. Also, they will all be built up. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. [RBW] FS: Wheelset (the Campy mini-group has been sold)
Hi everyone, I have this wheelset for sale still: Silver Open Pros 32h built on Hugi 240 hubs (Silver) with Campy cassette body (should work for 10 or 11 speed cassette as well as the later 9s). The cassette bodies are easily exchangeable if you'd like to convert to Shimano. These were built by Joe Young of Joe Young wheels.Excellent shape. These wheels have ~6000 mile on them, but my previous experience with Joe Young-built wheels tells me they'd be good for at least 3 times that. You should get at least a few more years of use out of them. No skewers. I'd like $250 (plus shipping) for the wheelset, which is less than the hubs would cost brand new and these hubs last forever. I prefer paypal. RE: [RBW] Break in period for factory wheels?
Some of the wheels on my rental fleet had bearings that seemed a little tight upon first spin. Most of these are Shimano. They freed up pretty quickly and run nice and smooth now. We've had little difficulty with the Ultegra Tubeless wheels we've been running. One of the rears needed a little truing, but other than that, they've stayed round and true and the bearings haven't developed play or caused us any issues. So far, we've not felt a need to play with the bearings at all. From: zdree...@gmail.com To: rbw-owners-bunch@googlegroups.com I recently got some nice Dura Ace road wheels and I like them. They spin smooth and are somewhat aero. I feel a lot fresher after rides (I was riding on Mavic Ksyrium Elites before). I was wondering, if wheels improve over time or miles? Is there a general break in period like 500 miles for example? Somewhere I recall reading something about bearings needing time for something... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
