Re: [RBW] Re: Wald 137 bag recommendations?

2021-04-03 Thread Jon Schultz
That Hungry bag looks pretty nice. Cool to see a company put the straps to
secure bag on the basket, which is way simpler and just as effective.

The ILE Porteur Rackbag-Small- can also fit in a 137 basket, and has some
interesting features. I've been using one with a basket, but find it's
better with a demi porteur rack.
I just use two bungees to keep in the basket, which easily moved to the
side for bag loading/unloading.

Re: [RBW] Re: ird power ratchet shifters keep loosening

2018-06-01 Thread Jon Schultz
Installing a new plastic piece helped slightly, but not enough. Additional
washers on either side also didn't help. Inspecting the lever further it
seems the internal ratcheting mechanism is completely worn. The shifter
used to be on the right side when I had Choco bars, so it did higher use.

I've swapped the shifter out for now. Anyone know if you can get
replacement levers, or just a left?

thanks for the help.

frame where the top tube could be in the 57 - 61cm range, with drop bars.
This version of the Rosco appears to be meant for upright/swept-back
handlebars, such as the choco bars that I built it with, or albatross bars
and the like. This Rosco is comfy for me, as-built, where the handgrip
portion of the choco bars are behind the stem insertion point, as a
semi-upright riding position - though I do like holding on to the forward,
leather-wrapped portion of the bar if I want to tuck in a bit and grind out
 some speedy miles.

Re: [RBW] Re: Anyone try the new Fairweather Rain Poncho?

2018-03-19 Thread Jon Schultz
I have VAUDE Valdipino Raincoat, Blue, Large, and I'm 6'4" and 225 lbs.
Mine has elastic loops in the front for wrists, but I typically hook them
over the brake hoods to keep the bar covered. I've also attached them to
the bars with velcro loops when riding choco bars/mountain levers.

And the rear modification is key to keep it from riding it up in the rear,
though a larger size mitigate the need for this (Modification: attached a
shock cord and carrabiner in the rear to attach to my seat rail).

Clearing the headset should be doable. You can put spacers behind the tab. My

I have a Rawlands demi- porteur rack on the way for my Sam with centerpulls.
I was assured by Rawlands that the rack will work with a spacer washer to clear
the headset...we'll see.
They also said the Rawlands is good for 22LBS.

I'm surprised Soma went with welded struts. Replaceable struts allow longer
struts for reaching lower mounts commonly found on touring and commuting bikes.
My ideal rack design would be adjustable at both mounting points.

I just received the Rawland demi porteur rack, and tried to install it on my
Rosco. I was able to add a spacer to get it to clear the headset, but there is
no way to add a spacer to clear the brake cable housing barrel. The rack will
be going on my salsa mariachi instead.

Re: [RBW] Re: Another Rosco v2 Build

2016-12-22 Thread Jon Schultz
Ryan,

Did you have 2 questions? You're first message was blank.

I'm liking the Choco-norms so far. It's been a change to have a bar with so
much rear sweep, as I am used to more aggressive set-ups. I can't say that
it is affecting my riding, as I still feel plenty fast on this bike while
commuting. It helps that the build is lighter than my stout touring bikes
that I was using before.

I've found the forward position is good for climbing and harder efforts,
as there is less flex in that position. I think the flex is more from the
stem though, than the bars. One negative with my set-up is that the
cables are sort of in the way when I am in the forward position. It's not
a big deal, just sort of annoying have a loose cable in your grip. We'll
see how it feels in the summer when I am not wearing gloves.

I would like to try a Albastache bars, but that would mean new shifters and
brake levers. My moustache bars have primarily been on my fixed gear bike,
so was more of a commuting bike than longer road rides. For now, I am
happy with the choc-norms.

RE: [RBW] Re: Another Rosco v2 Build

2016-12-21 Thread Jon Schultz
Rogue panda is cool, because they only require a photo of the bike with a
ruler/tape measure in it. No need to send a pattern by mail.

Re: [RBW] Re: front rack recommendations

2016-10-20 Thread Jon Schultz
The Simworks rack typically won't clear 700x50 tires, unless your eyelet
mount is very high above the axle. I posted some photos with dimensions
about a month ago on another thread.
