It's a Shimano 105 derailleur and a CS-M7000 11-42 cassette. Yes, that's
mixing road and mountain components but I have never had an issue -- now
going on 4 years and a couple thousand miles.

[RBW] Re: Thanks Grant

2018-06-22 Thread Larry Charlton
This is a difficult subject because too many people approach the subject
emotionally and attempts to be logical/unemotional get one labeled,
targeted, and rejected. The reality is that there are multiple mitigating
facts:

1. Mexico is a signatory to multiple international asylum and refugee
agreements. As such, citizens of Honduras, Costa Rica, El Salvador and
Guatemala are obligated to request asylum in the "first safe country" they
reach -- Mexico. To then travel another 1,000 miles indicates they aren't
seeking asylum but rather are seeking better financial or living
conditions, which is not a legally valid reason for asylum.

2. Most "families" being processed did not present themselves at a US
consulate and request asylum but rather crossed illegally and were caught.
They've been coached to request asylum under such circumstances. The fact
that an asylum request was not made from the onset indicates asylum was not
the initial reason to enter illegally.

3. Federal law demands that aslyees be processed and that their request be
properly researched and adjudicated. Federal court agreements also demand
that children cannot be detained for greater than 20 days. Adjudication
rarely is possible within 20 days. This presents a conundrum -- separate
children from adults awaiting adjudication or release the parents and
children under the promise they will show up for their court dates. In
2016, between 25% and 41% (depending on definitions and sources) failed to
do so. In essence, they were released and simply drifted into the US,
hoping never to be caught again. I think the US has every right as
a sovereign nation to determine who may or may not enter; to eliminate that
possibility by letting those not eligible for asylum flee is an affront to
US citizens.

4. Today, the executive branch faces two horrendous choices -- release
(which obviously is a terrible option) or separate the families (which IMHO
is also terrible but slightly less so.) My preference is that the Flores
agreement be put aside by the courts and that families stay together until
their court cases have been heard. Absent that, and based on #'s 1 and 2
above, I think that all should be deported. They can ask for asylum in
Mexico which was their legal requirement from the onset, perhaps properly
present themselves as a US consulate in Mexico and have their cases
adjudicated there with the possibility asylum could be granted, or return
home.

I started this saying that being logical begets abuse. I expect it now.
But I try to approach all contentious subjects from a legal and logical
perspective and not let emotions get in the way of a decision. This is
also why my first marriage ended. LOL

[RBW] Tubeless question from an old fart

2018-06-15 Thread Larry Charlton
So last year while having my Proto-Appaloosa built up the 20-something LBS
mechanic insisted that I MUST run tubeless on my 700x38 tires. I shrugged
and let him go. Two weeks ago I scrubbed a high curb cut and unseated the
bead. Flat tire. Walked the 3 blocks home and tried pumping it up which I
now know can't be done. I used my last CO2 cartridge and inflated the
tire. Rode the bike the last two weeks and yesterday the tire was flat
again. So today I have to take the wheel back and (I guess) have it
re-sealed.

This seems like a pain. It would have been very easy to simply patch a
tube if the scrubbing had caused a pinch flat. I can patch and be riding
in 5 minutes. So what, exactly, is the advantage of riding tubeless? That
said, can I just take off the wheel, remove the stem, and put a spare tube
in there? Does the sealant need to be cleaned out before doing that?

I'm old school, I guess. Anyone want to bring me up to speed, info-wise,
on this subject?

PS: Even though the Proto has a fairly long top tube I'm changing it over
from an Albastache bar to a noodle. I'm finding myself more and more
comfortable lowering the bar and I'm riding on the hoods (stretched) often,
so why not?Pics coming soon.

Re: [RBW] First pedestrian killed by autonomous car

2018-03-20 Thread Larry Charlton
Uber has been picking people up at the Pittsburgh airport using autonomous
vehicles for over a year. They've managed the sometimes bumper-to-bumper,
sometimes 70mph Parkway West to the city with no incidents and have
delivered folks to the city accident-free. Try driving in a city laid out
in triangles rather than blocks; talk abut chaos! The technology is still
in its infancy but certainly has left the sandbox.

[RBW] Re: My trials and tribulations with upright bars

2018-01-27 Thread Larry Charlton
I'm struggling similarly. I set up a prototype Appaloosa last spring and
rode the past season with Albastache bars. But I always felt like I was
"in-between" comfort locations. When sitting upright I found myself
holding onto the very end of the bars, often actually holding the bar-end
shifter in the palm of my hand and wishing there was another couple inches
to grab onto. But when I stretched out I found the "hooks" of the
Albastache to be too close. So I've been sitting here most of the winter
debating whether to go to something like a Bosco to get the bars closer to
me or just install some drop bar. Still can't decide...

[RBW] Re: (GIF) Don't know how this can be explained

2017-07-06 Thread Larry Charlton
Which is why the fastest riders are on recumbents. I can no longer manage
a recumbent because western PA hills don't align with a bike who's saddle
can be climbed out of -- and I'm too old and out-of-shape to spin fast
enough to maintain speed. Mashing on pedals and old knees don't get
along. That said, when I was riding a recumbent I was considerably faster
on the flats and downhill with far less effort. I'm taking my time, now.

[RBW] Re: Yves Gomez PBH range?

2015-08-21 Thread Larry Charlton

I just built up a 60cm Yves Gomez for myself. I'm 6'1 and have an 89pbh.
I'm sure she'll have no problem at all with a 60.

Here's what Riv says as to fitment for the current Cheviot:

*60cm*
TYPICAL RIDER HEIGHTS: women 5'6 1//2 to 6'2, men about 5'8.5 to 6'3.
PBH 84 to 94cm
SADDLE HEIGHT 73cm to 93cm.
You can fit a bigger Cheviot than a Homer or a Sam or Altantis or
Hunqapillar, because there's no top tube to hit your crotch.

Can't wait to see your build for her.

[RBW] May I introduce Yves...

2015-07-24 Thread Larry Charlton
So after lurking on the site for almost 18 months I finally pulled the
trigger and bought a Rivendell of my own. I was on the hairy edge of
simply purchasing a Sam new, especially when I saw the black and cream
ones, when a 60cm Yves Gomez frame came up for sale in this group. First
off...thank you David Karmishlian for being so easy to work with and for
delivering the frame expertly boxed and padded. The transaction couldn't
have been any easier.

Two weeks after receiving the frame it's now a complete work. Well, there
are racks, baskets, and bags to consider but it's RIDEABLE. And what a
ride it is. I'd been a long-time recumbent cyclist and my first foray back
to uprights had been a Long Haul Trucker. It's amazing how supple and
responsive this Yves Gomez is -- even for a 225lb Clyde like myself.

The front derailleur looks great and performs very well. Although, not
much is being asked of it since the chainrings are only 40-26. If, perhaps
a standard touring triple were in play... Note that the SUN XCD front is
a braze-on so a clamp will be needed, too.

I might get a SUN FD for both my bikes next time I need to change.
