2017-11-22 Thread Les Lammers
It may be the width of the bar not the length of the sweep. Wider bars
increase steering response. More twitchy.

[RBW] Re: May be a dumb question but if you've shortened your bars once can you do it again?

2017-11-22 Thread Les Lammers
Presently, I have a 120mm stem on the 55cm Cheviot that has a 59.5cm
effective top tube and have not trimmed the bar ends. Using Paul thumbies
but I will change to the IRD stem mount shifters to clean up the bars. This
is my first 'upright' bike and the varied hand positions of the Bosco bars
are working for me.

What do you mean by twitchy feeling?

Ryan,

FWIW, I've had a hard time getting the bars 'right' for me on my Cheviot.
*I* never could get comfortable with the Choco Norm bar. I stumbled on this

I seem to have the same issue with my Cheviot. I have some Albatross bars
I'd like to use but a bar end shifter is stuck is one side and nothing I've
tried so far will budge it. I may trim the bars a bit and see if that helps.

Go in the fall when the weather is cooler. Ride the French Quarter early in
the morning and keep your eye on your therapist. I prefer the Drago's
Metairie location. Great vibe and a fave of the locals. It is the real

[RBW] Re: WTB: MAP Ahearne bar (via Jay's Choco Norm vs Albas post)

2017-07-19 Thread Les Lammers

I have MAP Ahearne bars with Ergon cork grips on my Cheviot and like them a
lot. My L'avecaise frame has arrived and I'm planning to use Nitto
Fairweather bars, like the Noodle but with less drop. But the MAP Ahearne
may end up there too. You will need a shorter stem though.

Re: [RBW] Choco norm vs Albas

Bars are personal things. I tried the Choko norm on a Cheviot, my first
non-drop bar bike, but prefer map/ahearne bars. The Chocko were like
driving a tractor. Also, I did not like the hand position.

[RBW] Re: Atlantis vs Appaloosa

2017-05-31 Thread Les Lammers
I'm 65 and officially old. I have a 55cm Chevoit and labored over the
purchase decision. It's very comfortable ride and extremely stable. You can
ride and let your mind wander w/o worry long as you aren't doing rough
stuff. Fine on 'normal' trails. I perhaps would have preferred geometry
more like the JA but that may be niggling. The diagatube is great for city
riding and really makes the bike very versatile.I'll probably mount a
fishing rod holder. I too have MAP/Ahearne bars 61cm. They work for me with
the slightly slower steering. It's fast enough and quite the elegant but
practical cruiser. If I were younger I may have gone with the JA. The JA
would be the better choice if you rode more off road. Neither are drop bar
bikes. No regrets though.

I'm old but not dead yet and have a Jeff Lyon 54cm L'avecaise frame coming
because I wanted a sporty fat tire, up to 42cm w/ fenders, ride too. This
one just ticked all the boxes. :-)

[RBW] New Cheviot

2016-12-14 Thread Les Lammers

I was looking for an all around bike about 9 years ago. Not much out there.
Stumbled on Riv. Took a chance and got a Bleriot. The 650B's were calling
me. I still love it. This spring I pre-ordered a gray Chevoit and it's now
built. I initially had Choco norm bars but they were a bit too upright so I
decided to try 52 CM Soma Sparrow bars. I flipped them and added Ergon cork
grips. The saddle is presently a bit below the bars. Stem is a Nitto
Technomic 60mm. Using Paul Thumbies but may go to the IRD stem shifters to
clear the bars a bit. Tires are 650B Panaracer Messenger 42mm. They measure
41mm on Velocity Synergy rims. Not at all bad for a $30 tire. Saddle is an
older B17 that I sent to SA to have a cut out done. Installed a Nitto R14
on the rear. A Nitto M18, back ordered, and small Wald basket will go on
the front.

I like the Sparrow bars and the Ergon grips are very comfortable. The
cockpit is upright but not too much so. This is my first non drop bar bike.
Why did I wait so long? I need to do a long shakedown ride and will post
afterwards.
