[RBW] Re: Biking from Foster City to?..

2022-08-09 Thread Leslie Tierstein
Years ago, my company had an office in Foster City and then in San Mateo. I
kept a bike there for use when I visited. (Telecommuting before it was
fashionable.) I mostly did commuting and running errands, so I might not be
so helpful in avoiding busy streets. (For fun, it's worth seeing the
mansions in Burlingame and Woodside. And biking to Half Moon Bay was pretty
standard.) However, some of my fondest memories are my weekend bike tours,
in particular two of them. The first was taking CalTrain to San Francisco I
rode in a few times; it was doable), biking across the Bay Bridge, then
through San Rafael, and taking the Larkspur ferry back to San Francisco.
Gorgeous views throughout. The second involved taking CalTrain to its
farthest south station, Gilroy. (Trains only run during rush hours on the
weekdays, but biking from the south of San Jose isn't bad. And if you
haven't seen the bike accommodations on CalTrain, it's worth the trip.) I
biked to Salinas, saw some Steinbeck sites, and stayed the night. The next
day I headed to the coast and biked to Santa Cruz, stayed the night. To
return, I started biking up and over the mountain on Rte 17, but I decided
that was suicidal, in more ways than one. There was a bus that goes over
the mountain that had a bike rack for two bikes on the front. When the bus
pulled up, alas, both bike places were in use, but the driver let me bring
the bike on the bus! I got off in Scotts Valley to visit a co-worker, but
later continued into Los Gatos, taking lovely suburban streets back to some
CalTrain station or other.

[RBW] Re: Riv-ish Top Tube Protection

2021-07-06 Thread Leslie Tierstein
I don't know what you mean by "Riv-ish". My favorite top tube protector is
by Green Guru, marketed to messengers to help them carry the bike on their
shoulders. Velcro closure, not too much padding. Unfortunately, it is
currently sold out:

Re: [RBW] Mixte vs Diamond Frame

2021-02-01 Thread Leslie Tierstein
Glad to hear it. A friend has a mixte and it had bottle mounts. I guess because
my mixte had a non-standard tube it didn’t. It was an older Austro Daimler.
I’ll see if I can find a picture - just lent the bike to a friend.

Re: [RBW] Mixte vs Diamond Frame

2021-01-28 Thread Leslie Tierstein
The only difference I found is that, since the mixte doesn't have a
traditional down tube, it didn't have a down tube braze-on for a water
bottle cage. How it rides depends on other design characteristics. Also,
there's no top tube, so no pressing your thighs against the top tube when
you go downhill. But I have that same issue with my folding bike.

[RBW] Re: NYC Bike Rental Recommendations.

2018-04-03 Thread Leslie Tierstein
If you're going to be in town for the Five Boro Bike Tour, and want to rent
in town, you probably need to do so ASAP because many of the bike shops
have special deals for renting bikes to riders in that Sunday ride. Sorry,
don't have any knowledge of bike shops that rent bikes in towns along the
RR lines. Your best bet -- both for bikes and for trails/riding -- might
be to take the Westchester line out of town and check the towns and trails
up in Westchester county and beyond.

As for Citibike (Bike Share) definitely use it for trips in town. (I do,
even when I have a bike with me.) It has spread to cover much more
territory than a few years ago. The only caveat for you is that: I found a
shortage of docking stations in midtown (40s and 50s). And, depending on
what neighborhood you're going to, at what time, it can be difficult to
find an available bike or a docking station to return a bike. I've
frequently had to go to the second- or third-closest docking station when I
was trying to park a bike in the West Village at night after 7 PM.
