[RBW] Re: FS: A. Homer Hilsen 67cm DTT
Monday morning bump! And.I've been thinking about why there hasn't been so much as a peep from any of my clydesdale brothers on this awesome 67cm DTT frame and fork! It could be the pricepoint..but it's probably the Phil bottom bracket I'm including in the deal. Those who know Phil, know their bottom brackets need special tools for mounting/removal/adjustment. Well, I'm throwing 2 Phil mounting tools into the deal as well! :) Make me a reasonable offer if my price is too high. I would love for someone on the list to grab it, because I know whoever gets it would quite possibly be getting the last bike they ever had to buy. It is that versatile, strong, comfie, fast (it certainly won't be the one holding you back!) and awesome. Some other notes on the Frame and fork: -Waterford built -Has Rivendell dropouts...I've seen some frames (like my early Waterford Bomba) that had Waterford Dropouts. -Two sets of cage bosses Thanks for looking. [RBW] Campus pedal inquiry
Hi there! I'm interested in a better, more versatile pedal solution than the Time Atacs I'm currently using on the Hilsen. Generally, they work great.when I want to clip in, which is probably half the time. Rather than switch out pedals, I ride the Fargo, which always runs platforms (Crank Bros 50/50s). Does anyone have a campus pedal preference? You know the old one side clip in, one side platform style. [RBW] FS: Sackville Medium Green, Silver Brakes
Hi there again! It's been a while. That's what a new baby will do for you. He's two now, so I'm slowly coming out of the cave. and I am changing some things around. Sackville Saddlesack Medium. Hi! Long time no rap! I've got a couple things sitting around that need a good home. Both are in great shape and fully functional. The Sackville is probably four years old and has been used, but never abused. I've loved this bag, but I've reconfigured things a bit lately and really want a Little Loafer for the front of my Hilsen. 120.00 OBO. The Silvers are 9/10, save for some brake pad wear. Currently loaded are salmon brake pads, which I dropped in the moment I got them. These brakes probably have 1000 miles on them. I changed out to Paul Racers...gotta cover at least part of my cost there. :(60.00 OBO You can check this stuff out here: http://alturl.com/oxux3 We can split shipping to the Continental US, whatever it comes to. [RBW] FS: Touring Wheelset...Phil/Velocity 7sp, Dirt Drop Stem
This is the wheelset seen on the 64cm Bomba Frameset I sold last week here on the list. I had this wheelset built to last. And last it has, with absolutely no problems. Front: -Rich Lesnik built (HOW), Phil Touring Hub, 36 holes. Velocity Synergy Rim. DT spokes. Slight ding on the rim (from shipping, and not on the braking surface) absolutely no adverse effect on anything. Fantastic. Rear: -7sp Phil freehub. 40 holes. Velocity Dyad rim. Also DT spokes. Very little dish and extremely strong. Very good shape. 12-28 Freewheel has 500 miles on it. No problem. Both wheels are true and show the wear of used, but well cared for wheels. These have treated me very, very well, and will do the same for the next owner. $350.00 + shipping OBO. Can include skewers. photos here: http://flic.kr/p/az6A5i http://flic.kr/p/az6A3r http://flic.kr/p/az9eu3 Also for sale: -Nitto Dirt Drop Stem. 10cm. [RBW] Re: FS: 2009 Bombadil Frame and Fork, 64cm, old school parallel top tubes
First, there is a buyer for the frame! I'm very happy about this, as It is going to a good home. Second, if I'm understanding your question and explanation, Benzzoy, the saddle height is perfect. The bike fits almost perfectly (a tad bit tight in the standover dept...I should have gotten a 60cm) in it's current configuration (those are 38mm tires in the pics). It's the standover that is the question, and only when running fatties. Patrick -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] FS: 2009 Bombadil Frame and Fork, 64cm, old school parallel top tubes
This is killing me. I've come to grips that this bike is too big for me. Anything more than 42mm tires and my standover clearance is *severely* limited. Severely meaning non-existent. I have a DTT Hilsen as well, and it fits me to a T, so the Bomba has to go, in favor of something (smaller bomba or hunqa maybe) I can take take on some of the more dicey trails around here. This Bomba needs a taller owner. I had the frame and fork powdercoated chocolate brown earlier this year (it had clearcoat on it originally) and decaled it myself. The seat tube decal is slightly misaligned...can be replaced. Still looks great. The frame and fork are 100% functional and solid as a rock. Normal chainsuck marks, and a few random dings as should be expected. It has always been fendered, and well cared for. Links below point to pictures taken on tour last August. $1500.00 + shipping takes it. Includes the headset and sweet cream longboard fenders which match it really well. Thanks for looking. I'm 6'4, 280 lb. 96cm PBH 64cm Bomba (maybe should have gotten a 60. When I put on the Small Block 8's, there isn't much room for bailout over the top tube. Absolutely brilliant for fully loaded touring, though.) 67cm Hilsen (should be delivered tomorrow!) I've found that the double top tube is the secret to my success and frame longevity. I've grown to love the look. The stiffness and support improvement is indisputable. I've toured, fully loaded, self-supported, on the Bomba every summer since I got it. [RBW] Re: Informal Tall Riders Group
Hey Bobby, Don't have the time at the moment to upload a picture. Will later tonight. But here's how it worked out: Tires: -Marathons. 50lb pressure. Take no chances. 46mm. Racks: -Old Man Mountain Extreme front Lowrider, skewer mounted. -Old Man Mountain Sherpa rear rack, skewer mounted. Bags: -Sackville Medium zip tied to top of rear rack and B-17 -Jandd Mini Mountain pannier bags hanging on rear rack -Ortleib full size rollers on the front lowrider. -tent poles strapped to back of the sackville and remaining space of rear rack. Misc: -Three full Sig bottles in the cages and Camelback strapped over the Sackville on the rear rack. Three bottles were NO WHERE NEAR enough for a day's ride in the Mountains of Washington. We had no idea where we'd find water, so we brought it with us. I'll post a pic soon. It worked like a dream. So stable. Plenty fast and nimble for what we were doing. 60-70 miles per day. Massive climbs. The frame didn't make a peep. More info than you probably wanted, but I can't say enough about the Bomba for touring. Sweet ride! I will look you up if I'm in Detroit. I have family there. Likewise to you if you find yourself in Louisville. I'm 6'4 and my PBH is around 96cm. I've got nowhere near your reach. I bet my reach is in the 90cm range. Just found out it will ship today or tomorrow and couldn't be more excited. I always build my bikes myself and it's one of my absolute most favorite things to do. The build will be a combination of new and old parts, Brooks, Mavic, 105, Ultegra, DuraAce, Silver, Nitto, King (cages, not headset/hub/bottombracket), etc. I'll run Jack Browns and Marathon Supremes (35 and 40mm) on it most likely. I was thinking about giving the Grand Bois Cypres tire a whirl too. Oh, and I gotta put some Honjo's on it too. And a generator huband an Acorn bar bag.and a front rack and some sweet lights.andandand. Very excited! I was very particular about the size of this frame, as the 64cm Bombadil I own and tour on is a *just a tiny tiny* bit big when running super fatty 29er tires. So I used my experience from that frame to try to hopefully dial in the size perfectly. Of course, Keven is the man when it comes to offering great guidance. I will post photos of both rides when the Hilsen is complete! Cheers! Patrick Louisville, Ky On Jan 5, 1:40 pm, AmiSingh asd...@gmail.com wrote: It's a 69! How tall are you Pat? What's your PBH? [RBW] Re: 3 days in Gifford Pinchot National Forest.
Mike! Great work. I felt the exact same way about the route from Carson to Portland. You've characterized it perfectly. Funny that you saw another Bomba! I don't have to tell you that my Bomba (64cm) was absolutely rock solid on every road/path type we encountered, even with my size and weight. I ran Marathon 46's with the majority of the weight on the fork hanging form an Old Man Mountain Extreme Lowrider. I was 270lbs, and my load, with close to 200 ounces of water (3 full water bottles and a big camelbak) was between 60 and 80 pounds I'd guess. No wobble, no backtalk, no funny business, even when I'd mash it for the city limit signs or accelerate on climbs. Descending was a beautiful thing. If I had to do it again, the only think I would have changed were my shoes and pedals. I clipped in for for that trip. I missed the ease and comfort of street shoes on platform pedals. I will be returning to that area again. The most spectacular riding of my life. Patrick Louisville, Ky. On Sep 16, 9:53 am, Mike mjawn...@gmail.com wrote: I'm not sure why the front end was so wobbly. I don't think I had too much weight on it. I had the front loaded a little different each day in order to deal with the wobble and nothing seemed to help. The first day I had just my tent and poles, the second my tent and Vans, the third my tent and Tevas. I was thinking maybe there wasn't enough weight up front. With no weight on the rear and only the front loaded the bike was fine. As for the rear, I loaded it up the way I have for each time in the past so I'm not sure what was up. Fortunately the bike was stable at high speed (45mph). I brought two pair of shoes because I wanted to do a bit of comparison as to what worked best. The Tevas were fine but the Vans were better. I can't wait to return back to GPNF next year for more bike camping. Pedaling out there from Portland is a combination of monotony (Marine Dr bike path) followed by a really sweet stretch on the Old Columbia Hwy, followed by complete hell riding on the Hwy should to where a bike path resumes and takes you to Bridge of the Gods which is neat followed by more hell as you ride the shoulder of Hwy 14 to Carson. Still, I'll do it just to get out there. For this trip we parked in Stevenson which was really nice. There are tons and tons of back roads to be explored out there and ever changing terrain. I'd like to do a tour out there next year and stay on gravel roads as much as possible. I imagine by next year I'll have a heavier duty bike for out there that can handle a little bigger load. I kept thinking that a 26 wheeled bike with Schwalbe Marathon 26x2.0s (or 1.75s) would be nice which makes me think LHT (60cm, 26 wheel size) but we'll see. At times I felt like I was asking a bit much of the Hilsen. There were a few times when the Silver brakes were a bit out of their element and would have felt more comfortable with some cantis or V-brakes. I'm really glad that I gave this kind of cycling a try (bike camping, s24Os), it is by far my favorite, even more so than randonneuring or a day of singletrack. --mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Seattle to Portland Tour
Friends, Is asking for tour route advice off topic? If so, I respectfully retract I do a week long tour every summer. Past years have included: -Minneapolis to Duluth (first tour ever. Simple, yet informative on what touring is and can be) -Oakland-SF-Marin-Sonoma-Napa loop. (credit card, lots of climbing and suffering and WALKING, but still fun somehow) -Madison, Wi to LaCrosse loop. (partly solo and all self-supported, some of the most beautiful riding I've experienced) This year, I'm strapping down the Bomba with my Old Man Mountain racks (excellent construction, materials, functionality, great folks!) and all my gear and touring Seattle to Portland over 3-4 days, the balance of time being spent exploring Portland. I can't wait! For once, maybe I'll have adequate fitness as well! My question is about the route. We haven't decided details yet. Can anyone point to me to good resources for planning a bike tour route from Seattle to Portland? Should we go toward the ocean? Toward the mountains? What would a climb of Mt. St. Helens be like? I don't want to reinvent the wheel here...I could just base it on the STP route, but I'm looking to get creative, get off the beaten path, great campsites, light traffic, downhill the whole way, tailwinds the whole time, you know the deal. [RBW] Re: 67cm AHH double top tube inquiry
Good call. I'm sure the wheelset plays into this. 32 hole Dura Ace hubset with CXP33s with a beautiful set of Jack Brown Greens not pumped up too hard. Absolutely. When I look down at the front wheel when out of the sadde (just for a second!), I can see the tire compressing, etc. The spokes sometimes creak. I should have gone with 36 holes, but here we are. I'm mostly talking about bottom bracket sway and resulting front derailler rub. Though not a huge deal, it can get annoying, and metal rubbing metal, unintended, is never really a good thing. I'm no stranger to bottom bracket failures...a Soma Doublecross failed at the bottom bracket once when I was much heavier (thank goodness for steel...I unknowingly rode all the way home on a cracked and deforming bottom bracket, noticing only occasional strange sounds and some chain rub on the derailler). The stouter tubeset and second top tube of the Bomba eliminate all of that funny business. I'm thinking the Hilsen might be the perfect balance. [RBW] Re: 67cm AHH double top tube inquiry
Well said! I hope that Bernie Mikkelsen has been returned to it's rightful owner! I'm definitely not in your frame size range, but the double top tube approach is pretty valid - particularly for taller frames which are flexing. The tall Hilsens were the first to get the twin top tube treatment from Riv - the Bomba design came together after that. About the same time, GP was writing about truss structures in the Readers, and how they distributed forces and created appropriately rigid structures. I think that was the genesis of that twin top tube approach when appropriate. There are others who have reached the same conclusion - Bernie Mikkelsen as an example: http://www.flickr.com/photos/jimg/403130063/ Obviously, you have to get your mind around it, but as evidence in favor, I'd point out that if your Salsa is flexing and you are in love with your Bomba, it sounds like you're already there. The actual weight of a top tube and the two half-lugs is pretty danged minimal. If you plunked 'em on a balance scale with a water bottle on the other side The resultant ride is going to be what a smaller sized rider gets with a single top tube frame - riv comfort and superb handling. Hey Rene (Forgive the mis-spelling...again), For my 64cm Bomba, WITH 46mm Marathons, I had to go with the Old Man Mountain Ultimate Low Rider. Can't beat it. I used it riding across Wisconsin last summer fully loaded and it was a champ. It's the only front system I could find short of the NItto big front rack that would clear my fattest touring tire. [RBW] Re: Hillborne query....
Happy Thanksgiving! I have abandoned the dream of a Hillborne. I really wanted an orange one. Oh well. I'm looking at other options, including, but not limited to the 67cm AAH. It, like my 64cm Bomba, would have two top tubes. Not sure I want both of my main rides to be double top tube, regardless of the stiffness and benefit the extra tube would provide. Plus 2 more G's would probably get me put out on the street. I have to really think about this. Maybe the double top tube isn't that big a deal..see, I'm already getting my head around it. Now this little matter of 2 grand. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Now that's a beauty. Well done. Enjoyed your other pix as well. Care to comment on it's rigidity? Do you feel the bottom bracket sway to and fro when out of the saddle? Nice Bomba! I need a front rack for mine and a big old Sackville for the rear. On Nov 25, 12:30 pm, japhilip japhi...@twcny.rr.com wrote: Here's a pic of my 67 Hilsen. [RBW] Re: Hillborne query....
Oh, and as for wheels, am becoming a convert to the Salsa Delgado rim in 700C. My LBS (Jim Thill) has built some awfully nice wheels for me with those hoops. Yes, the other suggestions are still good, but will probably stick with Salsa for now. I will look into the Delgado. The guys at Hiawatha are really nice to work with. I rolled in there last fall with my Bomba and a broken chain and they had me up and running in a jiffy. Even with steady traffic coming in the door. Great shop, great stuff, great folks. I lived in Minneapolis for 10 years before moving to Louisville. I REALLY miss the cycling culture and infrastructure of the Twin Cities, but Louisville has some really great things happening.like hills, for one thing! I'm told that Riv is out of 60cm Hillborne frames. :( Besides that, the sentiment is that the 60cm will be too tight. I'm exploring other options. All of this talk about lighter, snappier wheelsets reminds me that with the purchase of this new wheelset and frameset, I'll have a spare touring wheelset. I'd really like it to have a good home. Is there any interest among those posting to this thread? Wanted to ask here before making larger postings elsewhere, ebay, etc. Anyone need a wheelset like this: Front: 36 hole Dyad , Phil hub, DT spokes Rear: 48 hole Dyad, Phill 9speed Shimano cassette hub, DT spokes Any interest, email me at bassandbike AT yahoo. Pics upon request. Cheers! Patrick Louisville, Ky. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Hillborne query....
Excellent feedback. Thank you. I would have the Hilson hands down, were the funds available. I've always wanted an AAH! I too am concerned I will feel cramped on the 60cm Sam. But the 64cm Bomba is definitely a little big for me...in fact, I could have easily gotten the 60cm Bomba and been comfie and happy...so I'm hopeful that an email exchange with Keven will give a little clarity. --Patrick in VT, your point about a snappy, strong wheelset is a great one. Do you have thoughts on a build? If I go with the Hillborne, I'm thinking XT hubset and some CXP33 rims or the likemaybe Open Pros, maybe Velocity Synergy. I just don't know. --Rene, I'm envious of your visit to Riv. I was there 2 summers ago on a tour from Oakland to Napa and back. Loved it. Thank you for the offer of sending a pic. I may take you up on it. Patrick -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Hillborne query....
Wow. What a great group. I've enjoyed reading it's posts for some time now. It's time I made a contribution of sorts...by posting a question! I've decided I need a 60cm Hillborne for spirited club rides. An orange one specifically. My question is this: at 6'4 275lbs and a PBH height of 95cm, will it fit?? I own a 64cm Bomba. I tour with it, I do club rides with it, I ride singletrack with it. I love it. It's a bit big though...so.. Can anyone advise? Any taller riders around 6'3-6'4 riding the Sam 60cm? How do you like it? If you chose against it, what did you get? I'm grateful for any and all commentary. Cheers!
