Leah,
The ride from Millenium Park sounds like the route I've taken several
times to and from Chicago, using Indiana Dunes as one of the overnights.
It would be a good ride, you could take Amtrak to Chicago and return on

[RBW] Re: "Grant hates toe clips."

2023-12-26 Thread Marc Irwin
I used clipess for years and thought they were the greatest thing ever
until one broke. I immediately switched back to the old platforms with
toeclips "temporarily." All I noticed when I changed back was that the
shoes were more comfortable. I don't think the clipless did anything for
me. I'm sure they make a difference for racers and people who live on
their power meter stats and count grams for a hobby, but I've switched to
spiky platforms on four of my bikes and two have MKS Urban Platforms with
strapless toeclips. They work great (I never tightened the straps anyway)
and I can actually wear comfortable shoes, that I can walk in also!

We don't plan to go as far as McCormick Place. We're open to suggestions
for lunch, I picked Navy Pier as a convenient turnaround point for a 35

 Hi All,

The celebrated Lakefront Trail in Chicago is calling. I’ve never done
it but on August 26th, I’ll get the chance..and you’re invited!

Mack’s Bike and Goods, the Evanston Rivendell dealer, will be expecting
us. We will meet there at a time TBD on the morning of the 26th, visit the
shop and then catch the trail from there. We will have lunch at the Navy
Pier (restaurant also TBD, locals feel free to weigh in) and ride for
 maybe
 a total of 30-40 miles.

Bring your favorite Rivendell, some mad money to spend at Mack’s if you
like, your sparkly personality and join us for our first Chicago Riv Ride.

Please let us know if you plan to attend!

If you want a larger footprint on that bike for gravel, I'd recommend
Schwalbe Big Ben tires and add Flat Attack sealant to the tubes. Don't

Re: [RBW] Please Join us: Riv Ride, Yankee Springs in Hastings, Michigan

2023-05-09 Thread Marc Irwin
That is always something to consider there. We will only be riding 6 miles
on paved secondary roads, the rest will be gravel. The main traffic
concerns in the area are around Gun Lake and Chief Noonday road which we
will be avoiding. I did a solo trip last year on that weekend and had no
problems at all.

Re: [RBW] Getting my groove back on with the Platypus - dealing with near misses

2022-12-30 Thread Marc Irwin
You definitely don't want to be intimidated from taking the lane. It
prevents a lot of terrible decisions that motorists make. I ride around in
city traffic daily and the most dangerous thing I see EVERY DAY is drivers
yielding when they shouldn't. They will suddenly stop a line of traffic
and wave me to ride through even when I am stopped with both feet on the
ground. It's ridiculous, in the absence of bike infrastructure we should
all follow the rules of the road and not be overly courteous. Incidents
where people are rude and negligent are really quite rare in my daily
experience.

One piece of it is curious, and it both clarifies and clouds things:
the Hunqapillar copy also states that the the “proto-Hunqapillar” was
ridden by Daniel on the Great Divide.

 From Riv:

 And it's a trail bike.
The tubes are stout, but reasonable in weight, and the strong lugged
joints should last or decades. There’s clearance for 58mm tires. If you
need fatter than that, get a Pugsley.
*Trivia: Former employee Daniel rode a proto-Hunqapillar the entire
2700-miles of the Great Divide trail. No problem. The current ones are
 vast
 improvements over that*.

So this strongly suggests that the proto Bombadil and the proto
Hunqapillar were the same proto frames. Right?

Re: [RBW] Using Your Rivendell Vs. Being Precious: A Spectrum

2022-11-09 Thread Marc Irwin
I've often wondered how frustrating it is for Grant. So many of his bikes
end up as garage ornaments. I've tried to explain to interested people
that the fancy lugs and paint get our attention, but the geometry, ride and
handling are what keep us on the bikes. My '87 Trek has nice lugs and
looks cool, but it hands in the garage while the Rivs get the play. I've
used my Hunq for everything six is why I'm on my 4th set of fenders and 3rd
paint job. The Sam gets better treatment but several recreational rides a
week. I don't mind locking either at a store, restaurant or bar with a
really, really good lock, but do have a Soma Buena Vista I use for daily
commuting and a cheap aluminum mtb to use here in Michigan during the
winter. Despite the practical choices I've given myself, the Rivs get
the play time.

Re: [RBW] Re: Kickstand plates, what's up with that?

2022-11-06 Thread Marc Irwin
I did break the kickstand plate on my Hunq the first year I had it. I'm
not sure what exactly caused it, but I was using a Pletscher two legged
kickstand on several overnight and week long tours. The bike was heavily
loaded and I had never trimmed the length of the kickstand legs. I suspect
the extra leverage and weight was enough to tear the plate from the
brazing. Riv offered to replace the plate if I shipped the bike back, but
I had them send me a new plate so I could have it done locally. I decided
against it because it was not a structural defect and just went without.

Eric,
The point is that riders don't use that position. Even against the wind,
only one with drop bars actually got into the lower position. They all
stayed up on the hoods or the flats the whole ride.

2022-07-26 Thread Marc Irwin
It was a normal Monday night ride with the Kalamazoo Bicycle Club. A
typical group was riding 15-16 MPH for 25 or so miles. A good bunch of
people in biking regalia on their over the counter crotch rockets with drop
bars, except for me and Leah Peterson on our Rivendells. with upright
bars.In the lousy cell phone shot I took from the back of the group,
Leah is the second white helmet from from the front left. Notice her
posture compared to the body position of all the riders on their drop bars.
It was that way the whole ride. Most club riders assume their drop bars
make them faster, after all, EVERYBODY uses them right?

It was just a few months ago Leah and her family moved to Kalamazoo from

had never ridden more than 17 miles and never with anybody else. I
introduced her to the women in the local club and she reluctantly

No John, I ordered from the first Taiwan production, Riv screwed up and
sold mine to somebody but offered the one Waterford 54 left. I got one by
accident. As far as I know the rest were made in Taiwan. Not that it
matters, it's the same incredible bike except for the pointy lugs and
paint. I think all the forkswere made by Toyo of Japan.

[RBW] Re: A Hunq

2021-12-08 Thread Marc Irwin
Not that it really matters, but that is a Taiwan frame, the Waterford built
have different lugs on the head tube as well as a different paint job.
Waterford only did one initial production run, so, unless that is a custom
order, it was built in Taiwan.

[RBW] Re: New Bike day- Red Mixte but not a Raspberry Platypus.

I find the Buena Vista very firm. The previous version I built had a VO
front rack and rear with Wald folding baskets. I could carry $200 in
groceries and the frame was still very firm. The front rack did wobble a
little under heavy load.

its pretty close right now. The build is pretty Bobish- 650b with 38mm
 Pari

dyno front on velocity Dyad rims. Tektro r559 brakes that stop very well.
Riv Nitto Choco norm bars on long generic stem. SKS longboard fenders at

thing in the future. Drivtrain is 10 speed microshift shifters and Shimano
SLX deraillers. and a vintage Shimano 600 crankset with Willow triplizer
46/30 chainrings. Rides great- tweaked the bars a few times after about 5
miles into the ride. Hit a couple steep hills and climbs well in the
 bends
of the Chocos. The interweb info on this for tire fit is way conservative.
I had 650bx48 Pari motos on at first and they fit fine, probably fenders
too. The handling is typical high trail drop road bike even with the swept
back bars. This is a little surprising. I was afraid it would be too light
but the longer chainstays may play into it- 450mm. Geometry is pretty road
bike too- 73 degree parallel with 45mm rake. This is the biggest frame
 they
still make-58cm. They did have a 62 in the past. The color is tremendous-
even better than anything on the web. Russo Red is what they call it and
 it
really pops. Real paint, not powder coat.

Doing a tour of lakes Huron, Superior, and Michigan in the fall, and
 this may be the ride.

[RBW] Re: The joy of winter riding, and how do you keep your toes warm?

2021-02-07 Thread Marc Irwin
Commuting in Michigan I have learned to use Grabber Toe warmers. I place
them on top of my wool socks on the top of my feet under my Chrome boots.
They last for hours, so, after a shorter ride, place them in a zip lock
bag, squeeze the air out and seal them up. They will still be working the
next couple of times you need them. I stay comfy at temps below 0.

[RBW] Re: Studded Tire Experience, help

Here in Michigan I have been using 50mm Marathons, but my riding is a
combination of streets and paved trails. The trails are usually packed
rutted and icy and generally fun to ride for a change of pace. I suppose a
more aggressive tread would be needed for snowy gravel.

Re: [RBW] Reverse Levers with Linear-Pull Brakes?

2020-12-03 Thread Marc Irwin
If those are long pull (for standard caliper brakes) they won't work
without a travel agent added to the V-brake. I use regular MTB levers with
interrupter levers on my Hunq and had to add the travel agent when I went
to V brakes. The travel agent is a PITA to set up, works fine, looks a
little clunky but I am really glad I did it. The linear pull brakes have
much better stopping power than the canti's I used before.

[RBW] Re: What? No bikes at RBW?

2020-11-14 Thread Marc Irwin
Bikes are selling out everywhere in the world. The local shop around the
corner from me usually keeps about 300 in stock. They now have about 20
thanks to a fall shipment. It's a generally good thing I think.

[RBW] Re: Was the Hunqapillar designed for Albatross bars?

2020-07-14 Thread Marc Irwin
The Bosco Bars came the year following the Hunq. I bought my Hunq, rode it
for a year and ABSOLUTELY had to have a lighter version of the same
geometry, so I ordered a Hillborne. The first Bosco shipment was coming at
the same time as my Hillborne frame so I added those to the order. After
riding the Hillborne with the Bosco's and the Hunq with wide drop bars for
a season, I added Bullmoose Bosco's to the Hunq and lived happily ever
after. The Bosco's absolutely confound club riders when they see my
Hillborne at charity rides, it's hilarious.

[RBW] Re: Thinking about cycling for me in the future....

2020-02-01 Thread Marc Irwin
I'm 67 and have been commuting, touring and club riding since I was
20. I think it has prevented my perception and reflexes from deteriorating
as I've seen in others my age. I think the occasional close call is a
healthy reminder to pay attention and ride safely. It will happen but I
remind myself that I engage hundreds, if not thousands of drivers on a
daily basis and the overwhelming majority are overly cautious. Everyday I
have to signal somebody to take the right of way rather than yield to me
when they shouldn't. The rude drivers or close calls occur (maybe) once in
a few weeks. That being said, it is always best to use any bike lane, MUP
or infrastructure when it's available. You can have the spinning classes
if you want, sitting still on a bike is no fun for me.

2020-01-15 Thread Marc Irwin
I had a similar experience with Marathon's on my Hunqapillar. They were
the slowest tires I have ever used, on any thing. I replaced them with
larger (50mm) Schwalbe Big Ben and have been rolling happily ever since.
The Big Ben is incredibly fast on pavement for a wide tire and the extra
tread comes in to help on the soft ground and muddy st*uff.*

2020-01-15 Thread Marc Irwin
I'm thinking, after a friend recommended them, of going to Bon Jon Pass
tires on my Hillborne. Is the extra light casing worth the cash? Do you
give up much durability against the standard casing? I worry a bit about
the casing because I'm bigger (205-210 on the best of days) and have seen
my share of snake bites from small potholes.

[RBW] Re: 2020 Goals

2019-12-28 Thread Marc Irwin
Keep using my bikes for transportation around town.I don't track bike
mileage anymore but that routine has kept my driving in the 2-3K range for
a year. Make 3 week long self supported trips and monthly weekend trips to
the Lake. I should ride in a charity ride each month and perhaps a few
more club rides. Find more effective ways to promote the book I wrote

about cycle touring. I should enjoy another great year.

2019-12-22 Thread Marc Irwin
Just did a test ride with the new shifter. IT works great. Is the smoothest
shifter I've used. I ordered one for the right side because it's a 1X setup.
The shifting was very precise without ant drifting or need to tighten the bolt.
I can see where one might prefer the longer lever but it's not going to be s
problem.

[RBW] Re: Issues with slipping bosco bars?

2019-10-14 Thread Marc Irwin
It takes a substantial amount of torque to keep those bars stable. I was
one of the first to try them years ago and they called a few weeks later to
see if they were alright. I had to use a pipe as an extension on my allen
wrench to get them tight enough. They have a freaky long reach back
creating a lot of leverage. I wouldn't trade them for any reason.

[RBW] Teach me about sealant in tubes?

2019-01-30 Thread Marc Irwin
I used Stan's for a season on my touring bike and was happy (no flats). So,
when I replaced tires, I replaced the tubes with Flat Attack prefilled tubes.
The sealant is gauranteed for 5 years. I haven't had a flat on the road in two
years, and I ride about 10k per year. I get a puncture now and then, lose a
little air, remove whatever caused it, add some air and ride on. The only
hiccup is when a valve core gets gummed up, it creates a slow leak that's
frustrating but I have learned to keep a few spare valve cores around.

You won't regret that. I bought one when it was first introduced. I use it
for everything. I loved it so much I had to have the lighter version and
bought a56 Sam the next year. I've been at N+0 for years since. I use Bosco's
on both and love them.

[RBW] Re: Glue for headbadge?

2018-10-23 Thread Marc Irwin
I recently used Gorilla Glue gel super glue. It seems to be just fine. It
brushes on and holds place very well. I've used automotive accessory tape
in the past but that is thick and leaves a visual gap between the badge and
the tube.

[RBW] Hot waxing chains?

2018-06-02 Thread Marc Irwin
I do it and i don't think is s hassle. The only real advantage I see is that,
by soaking the chain, you are reasonably assured each bearing gets lube on
it. Of course parrifin is cleaner than oil and that's the only advantage to
waxing.
I clean the chain ounce every 4-6 weeks with a Park tool widget, soak the
chain in a crockpot of plain parrifin for a while and use a parrifin based lube
in between cleaning.
I don't track mileage or fret over it but it'd seems to work ok. I feel
good about it and doing it raises me to a higher level of eccentricity among
my friends. I tell them the photos look better when every rivet is waxed.
