[RBW] Opinions needed on RB-2

2020-09-16 Thread Mark Taintor
My son, who has been debating changing the flat bars on his Handsome Devil,
is now thinking about possibly getting this '94 RB-2:
https://newyork.craigslist.org/que/bik/d/brooklyn-1994-bridgestone-rb-2-575cm/7194208384.html

Questions for the list:
1.Thoughts about the RB-2 in general and this sample in particular. Looks
like it's in good shape, but I'm curious about the lack of pain on the
bottom of the chainstays. Has it had a kickstand mounted in the past
perhaps?

2. Thoughts on his new Handsome compared with this RB-2. Obviously,
different bars will be a major difference. He's thinking that he'd enjoy
having two different styles of bike to ride. He has a small 1 BR apartment
in Brooklyn, so room for storage of bikes is an issue.

3. Is this a reasonable price for a bike like this?

4. Are there other bikes he should consider that wouldn't be too far off
the price of this one. Or other bikes that would be much better for a bit
more money?

Thanks,

Mark Taintor

[RBW] Tech question about shifter and brake cables and WTB

2020-09-12 Thread Mark Taintor
In the vein of there are no stupid questions: My son recently bought a new
Handsome Cycles Devil and is thinking about switching from flat to drop
bars. He's wondering if he'll need new brake and shifter cables. I told
him that I thought he'd probably need new cables for both since he'll be
switching to new brake levers and a new rear shifter. But I don't really
know.(It's an 8-speed bike.)

In the Wanting to Buy department, does anyone have a surplus pair of
shifters suitable for drop bars? Also, looking for bar end shifters.

My son lives in Brooklyn, so if any of you are somewhat local to him, that
would be ideal.

Thanks in advance,
Mark Taintor

[RBW] Amazing bike video

2014-10-02 Thread Mark Taintor
Some of you have, no doubt, seen other Danny Macaskill videos. He's an
amazing rider that can do some incredible stunts. In this one, he's riding
on the Isle of Skye in The Cuillin. Wonderful photography, terrific
production values, beautiful scenery, amazing riding.

Re: [RBW] Re: Tires/Wheels for new Sam Hillborne

2013-08-08 Thread Mark Taintor
Thanks for all your thoughts everyone. I've been convinced to stay with the
700c wheels that it was designed for.

Now as to my other question, 40mm Supremes vs 35mm Supremes? Any reason to
pick one over the other?
Mark

Good one, Steve, and excellent point.

If you decide that you don't mind the fact that you can't equip your bike
with brakes in 1) then you could work around the too low BB in 2) by
running too short cranks. Best of all, run no cranks or BB at all, since
you'll probably want your feet on the ground anyway to provide Fred
Flintstone braking. You could make it into an adult sized skuut bike!
  That would be fun!

You can not run 650B wheels on a 700C Sam Hillborne. The reasons are

  2. Drop. Grant already dialed the frame design of the Hillborne for
700xfat tires. Among those things that are dialed is the BB drop. Run
smaller diameter wheels, and *your already low BB height will be in true
pedal-scraping territory. * Virtually all recent 700c Rivendells are
lousy candidates for 650B conversion for that reason. The roadier Riv
models of several years ago are good candidates because they were designed
for 700xskinny and have less drop.

...unless you use very short cranks.

[RBW] Tires/Wheels for new Sam Hillborne

2013-08-06 Thread Mark Taintor
I have a new 56 cm Sam that's going to be built up in the next week or so,
and I've got a couple questions about tires and wheels for it:

1. I'll be putting on Longboard fenders and was wondering if 40 mm Marathon
Supremes would work with them. Would it be better to run the 35 mm
Supremes? I know there's clearance for 40 mm tires on the Hillborne but
don't know if that is with/without fenders.

2. Anybody ever put 650B wheels on a 56 Sam? Looking on the Riv website at
the page for the Betty Foy, it says that the Betty and the Sam can take the
same volume tires. The Betty mostly uses 650B wheels. As of now I'm
planning on 700c wheels, but am intrigued with 650B. Thoughts?

Thanks,
Mark
