Albacore bars are 22.2mm all the way across. 26mm shim included if you
would like, as well as some green Vans ODI grips.
Paul Thumbie is silver, 22.2mm clamp, Shimano compatible.

Woodchipper bars are 31.8mm clamp and 46cm width.

[RBW] Re: Drops vs albatross. Easy to swap or do I need two bikes?

2024-05-01 Thread Miles Payton
This is my shameless plug for Albacore bars, if you need something wider
than the Albastache which I found to be quite narrow, or if you want to use
22.2mm clamp brake levers/shifters. I mocked them up on my Atlantis and
they were a delight. I just prefer drops.
They're a limited run for Hope Cyclery but you can buy mine!

[RBW] Re: Rapid rise derailleur suggestion

2024-03-19 Thread Miles Payton
I got a used XTR M951 long cage derailleur for a song on ebay a few months
ago. Maybe there's not much demand? The seller gave me a half off offer so
I couldn't refuse. Anyway it works great and it appears they're usually
$50-80 depending on the condition. Not bad for what was once a
top-of-the-line derailleur. I'd just avoid the NOS stuff because that's
where you start spending $200 or more.
I've been plenty happy with mine. It's paired to Gevenalle 10 speed
shifters on my Atlantis. I can't speak to replacement parts but it wouldn't
be expensive to replace, and my old M900 hasn't needed more than a rebuild
in 20 years. They're pretty well-made.

Patrick, tires are Soma Cazadero 700x50mm. They’re an underrated gravel
tire I think. Fast, very light, supple, perform pretty well in a variety of
conditions and terrains, dry and wet.

You’d have to ask the previous owner who commissioned this custom fork. But

the option to go full canti or v brake somewhere down the line. And this

[RBW] Re: Rivendell paint color repetition: Your thoughts

2023-04-24 Thread Miles T
I’m a sucker for metallic colors… it’s like you get 2 for 1. A metallic
colored bike looks totally different in overcast weather vs a sunny day.
But the solid colors are great too. That dark green on the Clem “H” models
a while back is one of my favorite colors on any riv. At this point, they
have a wide selection of colors and I like seeing them pop up on different
models over time.

I love that scheme on your custom, Joe. Especially that cream outline on
the red accents.

[RBW] Re: A love letter to stainless steel water bottles

2022-05-04 Thread Miles
+1 for Bivo, I'm really enjoying mine. However, I did get the raw stainless
and ejected one out of a Ti King Cage on a gravel descent. If you're riding
rough stuff the silicon coated might be a better option, though I've never
felt on in-hand.

Re: [RBW] Re: Velotaxonomy: What are we, anyway?

2022-01-19 Thread Miles
Leah! Others have expressed good suggestions to your question but I wanted
to add my two cents, and mainly some encouragement!
First, I have no doubt you will eventually find some people you like riding
with. Might be a little tougher out there in Michigan (former Michigander
here) than it is on the California coast, but as others have stated, you’re
in a prime position to be an ambassador for the type of riding you’re
trying to do. I’m fortunate that many of my riding friends here are open to
all sorts of excursions: road, fixed gear, mountain bike, you name it. Yet
with the exception of Jared and Ariel, (hi guys) I’m the only one riding a
Riv in some of these situations. Fun people will love your bikes and be
impressed that they’re your tool of choice. People who scoff aren’t really
people I want to befriend anyway.
My initial concern was that you’d accidentally join a group that doesn’t
match your level of fitness. As others have observed, you’ll easily be able
to keep up with any casual/spirited ride. Knowing your average mph from
your rides is a helpful way to narrow down what existing group ride could
work for you.
But! My experience has shown me that if you plan a ride that has some kind
of peripheral non-riding activity involved (riding to food/beer is always
easy) you’ll draw some of the ‘quirky’ cyclists out of the woodwork.
Getting creative is the key: riding to an estuary for bird watching, riding
to a park with snacks for a picnic, planning a full moon ride to check out
an interesting old structure, who knows? When I make my riding fun-centric,
people seem to appreciate that. The focus becomes the people you’re with
and the experiences you share. When I ride in groups that’s my priority;
that everyone is having a good time. To that end, I usually outline terrain
and general pace when announcing the ride, so people know what to expect
and feel comfortable.

Reading your posts and seeing your bikes, I have no doubt the people who
will have the privilege of riding with your will want to continue to do so.
I’m looking forward to seeing how it goes!

[RBW] Re: Brevets on Rivs -- 2021 Dillon Beach 200k

2021-08-23 Thread Miles
Nice write up Bill,

Adam, like you, I find I also need a bit more fuel than what Bill was
carrying. For me, electrolytes are crucial, I seem to get cramps pretty
easily. I’ve been a big fan of Nuun hydration tabs.

Food-wise, Clif or Ivan bars are always good, but sometimes I also like to
bring a pb sandwich, or some other “real” food. I’m guilty of going full
gas-station nutrition and eating beef sticks and peanut m’s, probably to
my detriment. I think my ideal century has a proper lunch stop about
halfway through. Maybe a good burrito or a sandwich, and a stretching
session before getting back on the road.

Hey Nathan!

With some luck and the help of another board member, I might have my eyes
on a 58, but I'll definitely keep you in mind!

I can verify what Andrew and others already know; that these bikes feel
great to ride. I've always wanted a Panasonic or other Japanese-made steel
track frame, and to have one with provisions for racks and wider tires only
sweetens the deal.

Out of curiosity, what’s your PBH and saddle height? I’m at around 87 but
run my saddle around 76, and am wondering if I could fit a 60cm QB with the
tire size maxed out.
