[RBW] Re: Bizarrely on topic: AL absorption through skin

2015-09-15 Thread Oliver S.
I understand your concern but doubt that the concentrations being
transmitted are significant.

My uncle Charlie studies how chemicals indoors end up in us, focusing
mostly on phthalates transmitted through the skin and breathing. [And he
and my aunt Lulu are longtime Riv fans and handed down a pile of Readers to
me].

Today Charlie tweeted a link to a CDC
report on exposure to environmental chemicals. I took a brief look at the
report , and of the 212 chemicals
included (inc. ~20 metals), aluminum isn't in there.

Anyway, there's a lot more research you can do, but I think barefoot riding
sounds harmless on the whole and with respect to aluminum.

[RBW] Re: Large Rando bag / rack / decaleur interface

2014-05-28 Thread Oliver S.
While you might be able to get the off-the-shelf options to work, it can be
a fun project to make your own decaleur.

There's a DIY decaleur flickr group at:
https://www.flickr.com/groups/2215203@N24/ There are probably several
others out there too.

Mine's herehttps://www.flickr.com/photos/ollieandema/sets/72157629743160646/
and
supports a tall Ruthworks bag on a Nitto M12. It was cheap (~$15 in
hardware) and isn't good looking, and I intended it to be a temporary
solution that would be replaced by something nicer and made by a local
builder, but it's worked for three years on some rough rides. I take the
bag off pretty regularly using the wingnuts (the bag has a leather strap
that goes over the rack tombstone and velcro to fasten to the base of the
rack).

Good luck!

I use an Acorn Rondeneur bag on both my Saluki (62 CM/650B) with a VO rack

decaleur. It works OK, but I am considering moving to a taller bag - 250 -
270mm, which would require a decaleur. The VO website suggests that
neither the rack nor decaleur are guaranteed to work with a tall bag.

What rack decaleurs are people using happily with these tall bags? What
problems have you had to overcome?

Grant's post was timely as I've been obsessing over decals/tubing
details when searching for old bikes on craigslist to restore. I did
learn a few things about tubing, but need to cool the label search
down and focus on clearances, fit, construction quality, and the other
important factors Grant mentions. Won't ignore tubing, but won't let
it be what prevents me from getting my brother-in-law a particular
frame, for example.

[RBW] Re: Recommendations for front and rear lights to use with dyno hub

The Seculite Plus rear light is around ~$25. Why not hook it up if
you've invested in the hub and will buy a (more expensive) front
light? It is such a joy to not have to do anything when locking your
bike or heading out at night. Supplement it with a battery-powered
light if you want, but having both lights wired, mounted, and ready to
go at any time is great.

[RBW] quieting the Shopsack

2010-07-26 Thread Oliver S.
The medium Sackville Shopsack in the Wald basket has been wonderful.
Keeps things dry, easy to detach and bring into the store, nice
looking, easy to open and close, canvas feels nice, etc. But sometimes
the rattle from the dog leash hooks bothers me. I was wondering if
anyone was using any clever methods to reduce the rattle. Figuring
that some old tubes or cloth tape would work. Any other ideas?

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Tektro CR720 canti brakes

2010-06-23 Thread Oliver S.
Bill's assessment jives with my experience with the CR720s. At first,
they didn't seem as strong as other brakes I use, but they seem to
have broken in well. I'll replace the stock pads with Kool-stops once
they've worn out. There's no interference with the Nitto M-12 rack, as
seen (fuzzily) here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/ollieandema/3457750574/in/set-72157616845357158/

I think there were some extra screws in the cable hanger that I
decided not to use based on recommendations from others.

I put a set on my Crosscheck about 18 months ago, i like 'em. Very
easy to set up, i'd say biased more toward modulation than
v-brake-like power (though that's a subjective thing) but plenty
strong enough even for cyclocross racing. I've occasionally had a bit
of fork shudder with them under some circumstances, but it's rare. I
just recently had to replace the original pad cartridges in the rear,
so probably 2,000 miles on them. I haven't had a rack on that bike
since switching to these brakes, so i can't comment on that.
