Re: [RBW] Re: Reflections On My Riv and A Weight Loss Program

2018-08-17 Thread Patrick Shea
I used to take the train to South San Francisco for a horrible job loading
trucks for UPS. Some trains, usually the ones at night (11pm-ish) had steep
steps with the bottom step being about two feet off the ground. I had to
lift my fendered, large Wald-basketed, Schwalbe-tired, and Surly-racked
Fargo up these killers. The new trains have lower, and fewer steps which
was a big improvement but they rarely came at night. Oh yeah, this is Cal
Train in SF that I'm referring to.

Anyway, there were nights when I'd grab the rail to help myself up and the
bike was so heavy I'd find myself falling backwards. Getting off the train
was slightly easier but once I lifted the bike and stepped down, all bets
were off.

I solved my problem by switching to my Moots fixed gear. It has a Carridice
Camper on the back with a ti Bagman support. True, I carried a buch of
items in my large PAC messenger bag but the Carradice had cans of water for
the train, rain gear if needed, sweaty clothes from work, and an assortment
of lights.

Once I quit my job, the problem was instantly solved!

Once I removed the fenders, the basket, the Surly front rack, and the
weight dropped off like I was eating bacon and not jogging. But the Fargo
is still too heavy to lift up or carry down stairs.

Now, my commute is about two miles and I use my Moots. I took off the XTR
pedals and installed MKS metal ones so I can ride in my work boots. I'm
going to reinstall my Schmidt lighting so I can dump the Niterider and the
whole recharging issue. It's still got the Camper and a Brooks Swallow ti
saddle. I'm going back to a steel fork and Jintensha bars. It will still be
a pretty light, easily carried bike.

Way more info than anybody but me needs but I felt your pain!

Anyone need a medium Fun Guy 2008-10ish Salsa Frago f/f/silver CK hs, and
Deore triple crank/BB30?
$250 plus shipping? I'll put up a separate FS posting but I figured if you
made it this far...

Rock On,
Patrick "where did this flab come from" Shea

I'll be coming out with my new series of ever increasingly expensive books

Re: [RBW] FS: (still) 46cm Joe Appaloosa Butternut

2018-05-15 Thread Patrick Shea
Hey Chris:

I just received two pair of MUSA shorts from you and they are better than
great! I saw a Riv post about a lack of XL shorts, panicked, and ordered
some (L, not XL, but I was panicking). I wore them last week on my new job
with Ford Go Bikes in SF and they are every bit as 99.9% perfect as they
could be. Pretty rare to have a product exceed my high expectations these
days.

Thank-you Chris at A1 and Riv designer peoples,

[RBW] FS: '92 RB-1 54.5cm

2016-11-14 Thread Patrick Shea
I bought this frameset thinking I could reclaim my double century days, the
ones where I rode 52/42 rings and just sucked up the pain, unaware there
were smarter ways to get up those mountain roads.

Real good shape, no dents or dings, usual scratches from riding and locking
but the decals are still nice and intact and it's nice to look at.

$400 plus shipping, local buyer gets a free bike part of my choosing (no
duds).

I can send pics/more info to anyone who is interested.

[RBW] Shea's Shed Sale

2016-11-13 Thread Patrick Shea
It was the spoke that broke that broke the camel's back.

I will be offering any derailleur-related parts I have for sale. This is
one of them, maybe there is more interest here than CL:

'92 Bridgestone RB-1 54.5cm frameset FS

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/bop/5869406053.html

I'm asking $430 on CL, but I'll do $400 plus shipping for list members.

I have to pay for an unexpected motorcycle repair and, right now, this is
the only way I can do it, by selling anything I don't use on a regular
basis. I've already put up a bunch of ads on the SF CL. Bargain days!

Re: [RBW] Re: RB-1 tire clearence and rear spacing

2016-08-20 Thread Patrick Shea
Thanks for the info! The RB-1 seller got back to me and said the bike was
last used with 10-speed Dura Ace. He echoed what Jack said, that the rear
end had plenty of clearance for 28s. I feel like I'm going backwards,
frame-wise, but my '92 RB-1 was a bike I never should have gotten Big Ideas
about. I had a messenger/welder remove the braze-ons and install track ends
which meant a homestyle repaint. Previous to the RB-1, I had turned every
bike I owned into a fixed gear, anyway, so the RB-1 makeover was the
obvious next step.

My plan, now, is to put my impulse buy Record 10-speed long cage/Sugino
triple stuff on this newer almost impulse buy frame and hit the road.

As a retired librarian, I really appreciate this list's collective
knowledge and willingness to share it. Rock on!

Cheers,
Patrick Shea

PS- a tip o' the Tarik cap to French and Eric for the parts. Sorry it's
taken so long to say that.

[RBW] RB-1 tire clearence and rear spacing

2016-08-19 Thread Patrick Shea
It's been awhile since I've owned an RB-1 and have a chance to get a frame
at a great price. I can't remember (age) if the frame will handle 28c
tires. Also, can it handle 9-speeds without a reset of the rear dropouts?

Thanks in advance for the help,
Patrick Shea

It's all VO, 3x, 32 spokes, looks like new cloth rim tape. It also comes

[RBW] FS: Bikes, wheels, wool jersey

2016-05-07 Thread Patrick Shea
Okay, nobody wants my Fargo so I'll offer up these goodies:

56cm mid-'90's Riv Road converted to 650b, complete bike $750 plus
shipping, frame/fork/CK headset. $400 plus shipping. RAW, surface dusting
of rust-like substance in places. Riv frameset has many, many good stories
from many, many great miles, including my epic, grueling, rain soaked PBD
in 2007.

VO 650b wheel set purchased from list member and never used $200 plus
shipping

Swobo wool jersey, smallish woman's cut, MINT $45 shipped and I will
include a pair of Castelli women's (or mens with the right size thighs)
knee warmers, also mint, neither have been used.

2016-05-05 Thread Patrick Shea
Greetings:

I put this up on Craigslist, maybe there is interest here.

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/sfc/bik/5569522411.html

Not mentioned are the VO fenders and rear rack plus I will throw in the
Axiom panniers gratis. Everything works great, no clanks or clunks.

Rivsters can have it for $800 plus shipping.

Bay Area Rivsters can pick it up at my shed in SF or any BART stop for $750.

Cheers,
Patrick Shea

Re: [RBW] Ebay Riv?

2016-04-18 Thread Patrick Shea
Ha! That is my ex-girlfriend's custom All Rounder, circa 1996ish? She
recently sold it to a woman in San Francisco who was buying the bike on her
son's advice. She did not know anything about Rivendells, much less bikes,
in general. The Late Great Sheldon Brown had advised my ex on the parts
build up (mix of Chorus and Shimano) and it worked great from the first
ride. The buyer sent my ex an email a few days after buying it and said her
son told her that whoever built up the bike didn't know anything about
bicycles.

Cheers,
Patrick Shea

PS - the bike was up for sale here very briefly and it's too bad it didn't
go to a list member. Great bike, weird circumstances.

[RBW] RE: FS: Paul Racer Brakes

2016-04-06 Thread Patrick Shea
I put the rear Pauls Racer that I have and it was not even close. They
don't reach by quite a bit. Maybe I have the mediums?

IAC, the 650b conversion involves a 1995ish Riv Road model (700c.) I need
more cushion and am hoping the 40mm 650b tire will spare my right wrist
some agony.

So, I like the idea of the Pauls but I don't want to buy them and find out
they don't work. The Tektros are my next plan, once I can find some to
measure.

And a big thank you for the great information in this thread!

Cheers,
Patrick

[RBW] WTB/WTT 700c tandem wheel(s)

2015-08-29 Thread Patrick Shea
Hey There:

Does anyone have one(s) to sell or trade? Need a front for sure; the rear
is being re-dished but I fear for its future. Here's what I'd like:

A 700c 40 or 48 spoke front or,
a 700c 40 or 48 spoke rear,
a wheelset of the same.
140 o l d would be ideal.

Longshot, I know, but I have to try! A new set from almost anywhere is
about what we paid for the whole bike, a nice used Burley. If you know
Reload or Cadence products this was theirs and I have no idea why I even
mentioned that.

 $40.00

Surly ECR 16 frameset w. a pair of Surly 120tpi 3 Knard tires and tubes.
What a great riding bike!!! Purchased frameset/tires new over a year ago.
$600.00 plus actual shipping. You can no longer order this frame online and
have it shipped. Surly changed their policy. So now you must purchase at
local bike shop. Which means tax!

I also have a wheelset, crankset, Jones bars etc. for the Surly ECR if
 interested.

If interested contact me off list for photos.

If you look at pics from the Tour de France circa 70-80s and early 90s, the
caps were very puffy on riders heads. More room for sponsor's name. Miguel

Re: [RBW] FS: Rivendell Custom Complete Bike....$550

2015-02-15 Thread Patrick Shea
I've got Campy on mine, at least in the back, I don't remember what the 531

[RBW] FS: framesets...WTT/WTB: 650b wheelset

2015-01-30 Thread Patrick Shea
Ok, I'm not giving up cycling but I am facing up to the fact I cannot do my
real long road rides these days. So, my now-abandoned projects need a
change of address.

56cm Rivendell road frameset. Waterford built, one of the early ones. No
headtube extension but insane (in a good way) lug work and old style
seatpost lug. Campy bolt style. EVEREST stamped on bb shell. NO PAINT!!!
Fork is original silver, tho. Two repairs done, both of which make the
frame a bit stronger while still maintaining great looks. This frame has
done it all: fixed gear singletrack, triple, double, Paris-Brest-Dreux,
commuting. Beausage for sure. $600 plus shipping.

55cm Serotta Colorado II sunburst frame/fork, CK hs, Shimano bb. A few tiny
scratches from wheels, etc., otherwise mighty fine condition. $450 plus
shipping.

55cm LeMond ti frame, either Ouzo carbon fork or steel Surly one (or both.)
I stripped off the lame red paint (covered half the frame) so it's that
dull ti look. FSA headset. No dings, probably made by Litespeed. $400 plus
shipping.

WTT/WTB: 650b wheelset for 26 Mavic/XTR wheelset, black rim, silver 32
spokes. handbuilt by Studio Velo in Mill Valley. Low miles, strong wheels.

I am 5'8' and the above frames are all a nice fit for me, the Riv
especially so. Pics upon request.

Cheers,
Patrick

PS- Bay Area pick-up/delivery would be nice but I can pack 'em up with care.

Re: [RBW] Re: Poor man's Quickbeam?

2015-01-08 Thread Patrick Shea
You could also buy my 56cm old-style Riv road fr/f/hs/bb. 56 is the new 54
in the Shire. It's been through Hell but I imagine that to be a good mark
of a survivor. It spent about 10 years as my fixed gear commuter: fenders,
28c Randonnuers, rack eyelets, nice. It finished the legendary
Paris-Brest-Druex in 2007 (as well as all the brevets) with no scratches
and no flats but it did incur a weld-separation-incident the night before
the start. French Jah-Bey Weld, a steel hose clamp, and leather toe strap
solved that little annoyance. Fixed properly back in the USA! USA! USA! by
a metal arts teacher/cyclist. Oh, I could go on for awhile about it's
moods, likes and dislikes, and even re-live that fixed gear singletrack
stuff on Mt. Tam but I won't. Oh yeah, frame is unpainted except for the
original silver on the Riv fork. Plenty of pics available. $750 pick-up in
Bay Area or $800 shipped to lower 48. LUGS.

Cheers,
Patrick Shea

Since Bianchi (sadly and inexplicably) doesn't seem to be making them

Steel single speed with drop bars, V or canti brakes, take at least a 28mm

my commute and some of the rail trails around here. Fenders eyelets would
be a plus Mostly complete I'd like the bike to come under $1600. I usually
 ride a 54.

The only option I've seen so far is the Cross Check SS, Any other

Re: [RBW] Bay Area RBW meetup group? ride or camping?

Anyone interested in meeting up for a monthly Rivendell ride in the Bay
Area (East Bay specifically since I live in Oakland but happy to travel up
to an hour and include anyone located within spitting distance)? I feel
like there's a lot of you Oakland/Berkeley members on here, some of you
must be riding on weekends and fit within my style and timeframe of riding?
Or is there something like this already exists (besides Manny's rides which
look totally awesome but would take too much out time and energy out of my
weekend)? Would be nice to meet up and ride with some like minded folk.
More of a social gathering with some medium duty riding mixed in. Maybe
beers mixed in at the end?

One of my highlights this year was Entmoot. So much fun to meet fellow
Rivendell owners from all over. I've also enjoyed getting to know the
Rivendell employees, and fellow riders through the list and buying/selling
things locally. Would love to organize something where we meet up more
regularly, for a more casual, social ride setting. And by 'organize' i mean
that in the absolute loosest sense of the word. Last thing I want to be
responsible for is any sort of official group with insurance and waivers,
 etc.

I typically go for rides out of Rockridge (up tunnel road, snake rd, or
shasta in Berkeley, and figure it out from there) on Saturday or Sunday
mornings around 9:00 or 9:30 for around 3-4 hours (road, trail,
mixed)...usually, sometimes longer, sometimes shorter when time is tight.
Other times I'll go to N. Bay or further out in the East Bay (over the peak
and into Mt Diablo/Shell Ridge area) and find some routes there: road or
trails. I'm not very fast. Touring pace. Home in time for lunch and a beer.
I do this almost every week (rockridge departure) so could be a weekly
thing if enough people are interested. I'm not big on being out more than
4-5 hours or so, 4 hours is my sweet spot.

My thought is a once a month thing (like first saturday or sunday?) If
enough interest I can just setup a google group and we can take it from
there. Just gauging interest for now or seeing if something else is already
out there. Maybe an inaugural ride starting at the Rockridge BART the
weekend of Jan 3 or 10? I think I already have some travel the first few
weeks of Feb so could already be a rocky start for the second month, but
happy to make some amends for the greater good where I can.

Possible overnighter meet ups as well?

Let me know, PM or reply to thread.

Disclaimer: my main road ride is actually not a Rivendell, but a Gunnar
(outfitted with a front rack and sackville trunk bag of course), though I
have three rivendells now for trail (hunqapillar), commute (cheviot), and
single speeding (QB) that I can take out to fit in :) Unless someone wants
 to trade me an AHH.

700c WTB Grease Guard hub, black CR18 rim silver spokes - $60
 Matches Kogswell rear. Cheaper together.

 700c Suntour XC Comp - $60
 Silver. True.

26 American Classic disc hub, tubeless - $80
Black Stan's ZTR 355 rim, black hub. Light.
Doesn't match the ENO rear, but would make a great mullet setup, fixed
 rear, disc front.

Make an offer if the asking price is out of line. Cheaper for multiples.
These all have rim tape. Tires, cogs, and QR skewers are
 optional/negotiable includes.

Got it on the list, but if I keep it I'll build a bike around it.

 700c Kogswell fixed hub, black CR18 - $100
120mm OLD, off-road rated, but only appropriate for fixed gears, not
 singlespeed, if I recall correctly.
Built it, hardly rode it, never off-road, no rear brake.

 FRONT WHEELS:

 700c Black Alfine dynamo wheel - $140
Includes E3 light and extra bulb.
 Matches S3X. Cheaper together.

700c WTB Grease Guard hub, black CR18 rim silver spokes - $60
 Matches Kogswell rear. Cheaper together.

 700c Suntour XC Comp - $60
 Silver. True.

26 American Classic disc hub, tubeless - $80
Black Stan's ZTR 355 rim, black hub. Light.
Doesn't match the ENO rear, but would make a great mullet setup, fixed
 rear, disc front.

Make an offer if the asking price is out of line. Cheaper for multiples.
These all have rim tape. Tires, cogs, and QR skewers are
 optional/negotiable includes.

Next up: Handlebars. Cranks. Hubs. Rims. Freewheels.

At the Dreux control on the 2007 PBP jaunt, I saw a few riders who had
broken their rear mechs and solved the problem by riding as a one-speed.
Dreux is about 75km from the finish so these riders were looking at a
fairly long stretch of no shifting. Not a long ride in itself but after
1100km or so, 75km might as well be on the moon.
