Re: [RBW] Re: New Sam Hillbornes

2022-12-01 Thread Ryan Stanis
Confirmed in the email sent out today, no geo changes from last batch. My
2018 Sam is 26.8, so as previously stated, not a new development for the
frame. Wish I didn't already have one, the lime olive is quite possibly my
favorite riv color I've seen, second maybe to the green Hunqapillars.

Re: [RBW] Re: ISO: New wheelset for Romulus

2022-09-28 Thread Ryan Stanis
FWIW, to second Aaron's suggestion, the Velocity Quill is an improvement on
the A23, as many have found the A23 too easy to dent/flat spot (myself
included). It is a wider rim than the a23, enterprise, or pacenti brevet,
but any road caliper found on a riv shouldn't have issue with it's
width. Maybe overkill if you're staying off rough roads and gravel, but
personally I'd rather spend the extra money for peace of mind. As far as
Velocity hubs, some of them are rebranded Bitex, an industry standard in
prebuilt wheels. Unsure of their QR road models.

VO enterprise rim is NOT tubeless compatible if that is a current or future
concern. VO hubs are easily serviceable, and run for a good many miles. I
have been running a rear VO hub since 2017 in varying frequency of use and
have yet to replace bearings. If you're not trying to future proof your
wheelset, that $400ish price tag from VO is pretty sweet.

Pacenti Brevets has recently shot up in price a good bit. Nice looking
rim, tubeless compatible. Seem to build up with relatively lower than
usual tension on the non drive side rear depending on what hub they're
paired with, and I have received at least one with a flat spot from the
factory. But as the old adage goes, "sh*t happens".

Hope this helps!

A local rider, who was present at our weekly coffee outside meet up this

height for 650b. They’re currently running the bike with Paul motolites

way to end back up at 700c, but now with options!

Re: [RBW] Re: Brevets on Rivs -- 2021 Dillon Beach 200k

2021-10-02 Thread Ryan Stanis
Bill,

Alway love to see rivs out on brevets! I have a similar set up to your
Roadeo on a Circle A Cycles frame, 32s but *with* fenders, that is not my
go-to rando bike, but I find it a nice change of pace sometimes. Little bit
zippier feeling than my larger volume tired alternatives. Longest i've
done on the Circle A was 300k, but am currently improving the build on it
to hopefully complete our local SR series again next spring. Have yet to
complete a brevet on my Sam Hillborne, but will be taking it on a 100 mile
dyno ride down to Cape May NJ, then another 50 miles up to Atlantic City
later that day. Not the best test as the biggest hill will be crossing the
Benjamin Franklin Bridge over in to Camden, but will be a nice long time to
spend with Sam regardless!

And second your shout out to Ruth Works! Ely makes some great bags, and he
was hugely supportive of us as we got our new bike shop off the ground here
in Philly!

Re: [RBW] How large of a tire will a Sam Hillborne actually fit

2020-11-18 Thread Ryan Stanis
David, that build looks super fresh with the Oracle Ridge tires on there!
I'll have to pick up a pair at some point and pull the fenders to give
those a try.

OP, I've been running Panaracer Gravel King SK 700x43s on CR18s with VO
Zeppelin Fenders (52mm wide?) on a Canti Sam and the fit istight.
Fenders can get clogged with debris easily and if the fenders get knocked
around i'll end up getting tire rub when really cranking up climbs. It
wasn't til I went climbing through some fallen trees after a big storm that
the fender started doing thatShould've taken a hint and turned around.

Re: [RBW] Re: Herse v. VO Crankset

2020-10-08 Thread Ryan Stanis
FWIW, A friend of mine who first got me rando-curious broke two VO crank
arms (snapped arm above the pedal) pretty deep into two seperate brevets,
which left him DNF pretty far from home. These are the only two instances
I've personally heard of them breaking, and that was about 3 years ago. He
ended up upgrading to the Herse cranks and has had no issues since. A
costly component, but peace of mind in the deep hours of a 600k is
priceless.

Re: [RBW] Re: My Clem Smith JR. Build revealed!

2020-03-18 Thread Ryan Stanis
Tim, build came out great! Love the all-black everything on a riv, esp. the
nitto r10! I need to pick one of those up in black for myself.
