[RBW] Gearing question -

2024-05-19 Thread Stephen Durfee
Another list member recently asked a question "Which Front Derailleur
option is best for a 38/24 front, 11-36 rear". At the time, I commented
that my AR has a 38/24 front, that I often spin out on level ground and can
only coast down hills, and that I have been planning to remove the chain
guard and swap in a 46T front ring, to turn my double into a triple. But
then I got to wondering, would I actually be better off making a switch in
the back...

My 26" rear wheel is built around a Bullseye hub, with a 14-34 freewheel.
The front wheel is brand new - a Rich-built dynamo with a Shimano hub.

My questionwould I be better off making a change in the front, going
with a triple and the current rear wheel? Or, should I upgrade to a new
rear wheel, with a hub cassette at 11-36? Here is my stab at basic math,
which may or may not provide useful information
My current "big gear" 38÷14 = 2.71
with the added triple, 46÷14 = 3.28
with a new cassette and existing chainrings 38 ÷ 11= 3.45

I understand, of course, a new rear wheel would be a more expensive
solution. My existing FD is a Shimano 105. I think it could handle the
triple, but I haven't yet put it to the test. Are there other factors to
consider?

[RBW] Re: Front derailleur options for 38/24 front, 11-36 rear?

2024-05-12 Thread Stephen Durfee
Hi Robert, just wondering if you have considered a 42/28, or other options
for the front?
I have been running a Silver 38/24 with a chainguard on my All-Rounder for
the past year or so, and I'm planning on converting to a triple, swapping
out the guard for a third, 46T ring. I found the smaller design of the
crank to be frustrating ...even on level ground, I'll be pushing the limit.
Downhills are only for coasting. That said, the smallest ring of the
freewheel has 13T.
When I built my Homer, I went with a VO 46/30 compact double. So far, so
good!

[RBW] WTB/ Rear Rack Advice

2024-05-03 Thread Stephen Durfee
Looking for a rear rack for my trusty All Rounder, something that will
support panniers for some summer excursions...perhaps something like the
Shiny Rear Rack. Does anyone have an extra they would be looking to
offload? Or, suggestion for something more appropriate?

[RBW] Eroica California

2024-04-02 Thread Stephen Durfee
Curious if anyone on this forum is also a Vintage enthusiast and has
interest in the Eroica event that is run on the Central Coast of
California. I've ridden it a few times on my PX-10... its a great ride,
although the organization that runs the event has had its ups and downs
over the years. Currently, the website lists September 22, 2024 as the run
date, but the registration button leads to last year's sign-updoes
anyone have any better intel?

[RBW] Re: Friend in SF Bay Area Selling Roadini

2024-03-22 Thread Stephen Durfee
Just sayin', you might advise your friend that 2k is a big ask for this
bike, as listed. I had basically the same rig, same color/same vintage and
built up pretty much the samehad it listed on the same Bay Area CL for
quite some time last year at 1700...I eventually sold it as a Black Friday
special for 1600. It was the only legit offer that I got in >2 months.
Folks these days want the newer model Roadini, with the greater tire
clearance. Nice bike, though. and GLWS

[RBW] Yet another tired question...

2024-02-25 Thread Stephen Durfee
My son and I are planning an adventure along the Erie Canal route for this
summer, with a few detours along the way to visit friends and explore the
Finger Lakes. I’m planning to ride my All Rounder (26” wheels) and carry
clothes and some gear for camping, but trying to keep the packing light. It
will be mostly a paved road trip, but we might get the chance to get onto
some gravel. With that as the back story, I’m curious about tire
recommendations. The bike came to me with Continental Contacts and I’ve
experimented with Paselas and RH Elk Pass. I'm ready to try something new
and would welcome the suggestions,

Hi Chris - I've been thinking about a dynamo set-up for my Homer...I'm not
that familiar with the options, so just reading whatever I can find about
the items you have chosen. Are you upgrading to a new system?

[RBW] Re: Roadini Feedback

2024-01-05 Thread Stephen Durfee
Chris - I got my Roadini just over a year ago, a complete bike purchased
from a CL listing in South Carolina that I had shipped to Napa. I wanted a
RIv so bad, and a "road bike" in particular, but was (perhaps like you),
hoping to save a few bucks on a pre-owned model. I had previously visited
HQ and talked with Will, who acknowledged that I was on the cusp between 54
and 57, and that either could be a good fit...I later concluded that I
should have gone with the larger size - the one I got was a 54 in "Old
Blue", an earlier model which would not accept the larger tire size that
the newer models do. I liked the bike well enough that I considered
investing in a brand new frame (that Gold is hot!) but also realized that I
didn't love the components that came with that bike in the first place.
And so, since I would have been essentially starting from scratch, it
didn't take much convincing to grab that Homer frame that came up locally,
and then build it up with the parts that I wanted. Now I have a bike that I
love, love, love, in a size that fits! I kept it lean, with some Noodles
and 33mm Jack Browns, no racks and only a spare tire tool kit. The Roadini
felt good, but the Homer feels great! And while I'm the first to
acknowledge that I know nothing about BB drop, or could comment on
flexiness, or even know how much it weighs...I feel fast when I'm on it.

If in your heart, you want an orange 50, I'd say just wait. But you're
close enough to Walnut Creek to go have a spin on a new bike and see what
you think. The newsletter that came out today says they discovered one Gold
50 in stock...

 Howdy all,

So I realize I'm posting this on the RBW list, so there is bound to be
some bias and that's ok.. ;) I'm a Riv owner myself with a current AHH I
got from my Dad when he passed and have previously owned a Bleriot and a
 Ram for a short time.

So, my question is simple- does the Roadini feel fast(ish) when riding?
I'm sure builds vary and so weight will vary, but I know some bikes can
weigh a bit more and still feel "quick".. to be fair, I'm no racer, but I
like a bike to feel good when I stand up to pedal or am zipping around at
my, fast for me, 18-19 mph..

I would be looking to build up with drop bars BTW with a modern-ish
 group..

Finally, anyone have a 50cm frameset (or complete maybe) they are
 looking to move?

 Thanks,

Re: [RBW] A Homer Hill build....

2023-11-28 Thread Stephen Durfee
Hey Sarah - fun to follow this thread because I am also in the midst of a
Homer road bike build, to complement my All-Rounder adventure bike. I have
the same Silver 38/24 on the AR and found it to be frustrating even on the
flats - I picked up a single 46T chainring and (when I find the time) will
be swapping that in for the chainguard to make mine a more useful triple.
Meanwhile, the Homer will be getting a 46/30 crankset from VO and an 11-34
cassetteNexave RD and Rich-built Velocity Synergy wheelset (33mm Jack
Browns) collected from folks on the list. I'm putting the finishing touches
on mine now, let's plan a Homer parade for GGP when you get yours built!

IMO redundant gears are more of a conceptual or theoretical concern
than a real issue. If you’re setting up a triple, you really end up with:

 - a middle ring for the majority of your riding
 - a small ring for big hills, use it with the biggest cogs in back
 - a big ring for downhills or otherwise going fast. Use it with your
medium and small cogs and back.

Yes, your small/small and big/big combos will give you those redundant
gears, but who cares? You don’t need to use them anyway.

For sure, a drop bar looks great, and as others have already pointed out,
there are several drop bar variations out there besides the Noodle...I've
been curious about the Origin8 Tiki Bar, for example. I'm just now looking
to offload a Roadini that is fit with Noodles and brifters, and I have to
say that while the combination is fun, I also get sore hands fairly
quickly - say by mile 15. I've got an Albastache bar on my XO-3, and am
quite happy with that for my around-town riding and daily commute. I'm also
fully behind the idea of saving $, so intra-list sales and swaps, CL and
Facebook marketplace are my main source of parts.

[RBW] WTB - Wheels for my Homer

2023-10-15 Thread Stephen Durfee
Hello friends, I'm looking to build up an older Waterford Homer frame that
recently arrived at my house and need a set of wheels... 700c, 135 rear
spacing. I suppose I could order up something new, but thought I would
check the list first. I'm in the SF Bay Area. Thanks!

Re: [RBW] Re: Using Your Rivendell Vs. Being Precious: A Spectrum

2023-10-04 Thread Stephen Durfee
I was so grateful to find a '93 XO-3 frame in very good condition a few
years back...I built it up as my everyday rider, with a 1x 8 drive, unfancy
26" wheels (with Panaracer Paselas), and an Albastache bar. Basket in the
front and a Carradice bag in the rear - it's perfect for the job. I commute
most days, taking a one-hour ferry ride across the SF Bay, exposing the
bike to relentless salt spray, but I do my best to keep it clean and I've
grown to love itmeanwhile, I happened upon the most beautiful
Waterford-built All-Rounder last spring and scooped it right up. This one
is essentially a mirror image of the B'stone, but so much prettier. I've
experimented with several different bar/stem set-ups, none of which are
quite as good as the Albastache, and I will probably wind up with that
eventually. That said, I'm hesitant to subject it to the whims of my daily
seafaring adventure, especially when I have a bike that is already built
for that purpose. So, for the time being, it only gets infrequent weekend
attention.

@Jason I get what you're saying and had been thinking about the
Albastache for months. I do like the reach on it and the more assertive
 set
up (why does aggressive feel wrong to me in the context of me biking??).
What ultimately pulled me away was the brake set up. I put inverse levers
on the Porteur and liked having my hand at the levers for my mostly city
riding through traffic. Now you've got me thinking about the Albatross
 upside down :)

@Jock I too hope he knows how lucky he is! At the time it happened I
didn't even mention it to him, knowing how much he'd beat himself up if he
knew what happened in a moment of carelessness. We had a riding date out
 to
dinner last night and I mentioned over a beer that I shared this story
 that
he of course didn't remember, having never been told. He asked me to show
 him my post...I declined :p

@Johnny Truly appreciate hearing this from someone who's tried both!
I'm also really drawn to the beauty of that bar and am dreaming up
elaborate bar tape combos a la Grant and Blue Lug. I'm still thinking I
might want to shave off a bit the swept back length if it wouldn't
 compromise anything

@Kim Thank you, great advice and wise move, especially thinking of
anytime it's put on the rack to accompany us on vacation

Re: [RBW] San Francisco/Bay Area Riv Riders

2023-08-05 Thread Stephen Durfee
Ok all, the weekend is approaching, so I'm going to propose the
following...

Let's start in the Mission, ride out the Wiggle and do a loop through GGP,
then down OceanBeach/Great Highway to Lake Merced, then back up and through
the Park and back to the Mission. It's an easy ride - I have to work at
10:30, so would ask that we meet at Dandelion Chocolate, at 16th and
Alabama, depart at 8:00. When we get back, the hot chocolate will be on me.
