My wife has a Brooks B67 short on her Betty Foy and she doesn't complain.
On her Brompton she has a Brooks B17 short.

Re: [RBW] Re: Suggestions for better braking?

2022-01-04 Thread Thomas Blak
Late to the game on this one but I specifically came back to this group
because I have always had problems with the braking performance with my Sam
and 559 brakes. To put it bluntly this is the worst braking setup I have
ever had, though my Brompton is a close second. I have tried almost
everything to get the brakes to work, new cables, new housing, new salmon
pads, brass ferrules. The only thing I haven't tried is machined sidewall
rims which cyclist1959 suggested above. I think the solution for me is a
new frame with V brakes.

Eric said it best "Those long reach calipers are a bad design concept." I
agree 100%.

[RBW] FS- Winter Cycles frame 55 cm

2021-05-25 Thread Thomas Blak
I wanted Eric to build me a fast version of my Rivendell Sam Hillborne but
with disc brakes and thru axles. It isn't exactly what I wanted so it needs
to go.

For your consideration a custom steel hand made lugged frame with hand
carved lugs. Modern design elements such as disk brakes and thru axles
compliment this frame.

Designed for 650b wheels, 42 mm wide.

Measurements

55 cm top tube ctc

52 cm seat tube ctc

16 cm head tube (actual)

43 cm chain stay ctc

Designed with a 1” fork to keep the aesthetics.

27.2 seat tube

Stem 120 mm, 26.0 bar clamp

Paid $5500 for frame, fork, headset and stem, selling for best reasonable
offer. It is package deal. Mandatory price per rules of the forum $1000 US
or best reasonable offer.

It has been ridden 40 km and there are two imperfections. There is a small
chip at the bottom bracket, and I have touch up paint. There is a second
imperfection at the top the hand made plated stem.

After two weeks if a reasonable offer is made it will go the highest
bidder. I have tried putting a price and nothing, so let the market dictate
the price.

BEST Reasonable offer, please get this out of my house!

Re: [RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-24 Thread Thomas Blak
If you are taking about the round keys from Kryptonite, they were phased
out well over a decade ago and even then, not all were opened easily. I
could never open the three I owned at the time using the pen method.Take
your mechanics advice with a grain of salt. Kryptonite and ABUS are the two
leading companies for bike locks and they are for a reason.

The Lock Picking Lawyer has a YouTube channel where he just picks locks. I
watch these because of the entertainment value but he is very good at what
he does. Have a look at the lock he chooses for his own bicycle. More
importantly listen to why he chose that particular lock.

[RBW] Re: What high security locks are people locking their bikes with?

2019-04-23 Thread Thomas Blak
I use Pitlocks on my Sam and my wife's Betty Foy for both wheels and the
seat post. Each bike is then locked with 2 New York Fahgettaboudits,
supplemented with a Krypto cable and Kryptonite Evolution. So three U locks
per bike. Then they are placed in a bike locker in my condo building with
another Kryptonite mini locking the door plus a Master padlock.

Yes, it seems like overkill to many but you chose the locks to the amount
of risk. If someone gets into my locker they are isolated and have plenty
of time to attack the locks. This way I make that as difficult as possible.

My wife's bike that she keeps in Japan is locked with some cheap Dutch lock
that would take nothing to open. The risk is low, therefore no need for U
locks etc.

When I commuted to work I left three Kryptonites at work so I wouldn't have
to carry them back and forth.

For the Bromptons, they stay inside our unit but when traveling we use ABUS
Bordo 6500 locks. They are easier to carry on the Bromptons, but I have
less confidence they can hold up as well.

Again it is all about risk and minimizing that risk. In Toronto, the risk
is high, in Japan the risk is low and I lock accordingly.

[RBW] Re: Toronto Recommendations.

2019-04-03 Thread Thomas Blak
You will be really close to the Distillery District
which to me is the best part of
Toronto for visitors.

Kensington has been mentioned and it is right beside China Town #1, so you
should check that out.

Riding along the lake can be quite enjoyable. If you ride west you should
go to at least the Humber River. If you are feeling adventurous ride north
along the Humber River to Old Mill. The have a really nice High Tea if you
are riding with someone else. Hoopdriver is not that far from Old Mill. It
really is the best bike shop in the city. Also on the way to Hoopdriver is
one of the best bakeries in the city. French bakery with a Japanese twist.
Patisserie
27 , has the best croissants outside of
France, plus the other goodies with Japanese fusion.

Another nice ride is to the Brickworks
. This is an interesting
ride because it is like you are in the country but you are actually in the
middle of the city. Totally accessible by bike paths.

For restaurants, there is so much to chose from. Toronto is multicultural,
so you can chose any food you want. I tried Syrian food last week and loved
it. My recommendations are Greek Town along
the Danforth. My recommendation is Pantheon
and make sure you order the flaming cheese (Saganaki). My favorite
restaurant is Bistro Camino. Japanese owned French restaurant with Japanese
fusion. Not really a place to ride too but the subway will take you there.

Great neighbourhoods are abundant. The Junction is worthy of a visit but I
am biased I live there. There are craft breweries if you are into that
stuff, and other great restaurants. Ossington and Dundas West
neighbourhood, also have great restaurants. Korean Town if you fancy Korean
food. Little Italy along College Street is another Toronto landmark.

Here is a quote from Christopher Hume a writer from the Toronto Star
newspaper.

Think of tourists who come here and visit only the Eaton Centre, CN Tower
and, say, Yonge-Dundas Square. They could return home and claim to have
seen the sites, but did they experience Toronto? We understand why they
wouldn’t bother with North York or Etobicoke, but what about Queen West,
Roncesvalles, Ossington or the Danforth? Not only do these places offer
lots of character and appeal, they are ideal for observing Torontonians up
close.

source:Toronto Star

So that should get you started in your research of where and what you want
to do in Toronto. Three days won't be enough but it will give you a taste
of what the city has to offer.
