[RBW] WTB: MUSA Rain Pants-medium

2024-02-15 Thread WETH
I am wearing through my current pair of MUSA rain pants. Anyone have a
pair they are willing to sell? Size medium.

Here is a photo of what I am seeking, in case some folks are unfamiliar
with this great
item: https://rivbike.tumblr.com/post/133429360334/holiday-flyer

With thanks,
Erl Houston

Thanks John and Paul. It is a keeper! The tire size is 27.5 x 2.35 and
makes for a great ride.
All the best,

[RBW] Re: Ride Report: Hunqapillar on Monumental Loop

2022-04-02 Thread WETH
Hi all,
Thanks for the positive responses. It was truly an amazing trip. I'll
attempt to answer everyone's questions and comments in this one post.

Doug,
Yes, I loved having the kickstand. Although, I did joke about the extra
weight on a few occasions! ;)

John,
stopping in Hatch was a treat and a delicious one at that.

Patrick,
Desert Solitaire is a favorite book which I reread every few years.

Brad,
the AWC merchandise is just high quality! :)
The closet bed was my room at the B that served as a homebase. It was
cozy. We averaged about 7.5 mph so I guess we were riding/hiking for about
6-7 hours a day. We'd go to sleep at sunset which was about 8pm and be up
about 7am and on the road between 8 and 9 am. The route on bikepacking.com
has cattle tanks and restaurants well marked so we only had to carry enough
water to cover those distances. I think we tried to have 4 liters each to
get us between most points. I carried coffee and oatmeal for breakfast
along with snacks for days when we were not in a town for lunch and/or
dinner.

John,
The loop is not friendly to tires with tubes. I had a tubeless wheelset
built for this trip and other trips I hope will follow. I picked up lots
of goatheads, but I never saw evidence of leaked sealant. The
bikepacking.com description states that tubeless is a necessity. We both
ran tubeless and had no issues.

[RBW] Ride Report: Hunqapillar on Monumental Loop

2022-04-01 Thread WETH

I spent a few days with a friend exploring Las Cruces, NM and the northern
half of the Monument Loop 2.0 (
https://bikepacking.com/routes/monumental-loop/). I rode my Hunqapillar
and found it equal to the task. The Monumental Loop contains paved roads,
paved bike paths, gravel paths, dirt roads of varying quality, single
track, and sections of hike-a-bike trails. I find the desert therapeutic,
especially in early spring! The camping spots we found were beautiful and
remote. We divided the northern half of the loop into three 45ish mile
days, which was the perfect pace at which to enjoy the scenery, to eat
meals in a few of towns we passed through, and to insure remote camping
spots.

model with a metal tag showing serial number 101. I purchased the bag used
a few years ago off this list and never used it. It appears to have been
only scarcely used by the previous owner. Please see the photos for
condition: https://erlhouston.smugmug.com/Portfolio/For-Sale-Saddlesack

$150 for local pick-up in the Washington, DC area or $170 shipped. PayPal.

[RBW] Re: September 10 Blahg, drive train gearing development

2021-09-18 Thread WETH
Keith,
Thanks. Yes, as I worked with Bob at Bantam and read more about Pinion, I,
too, saw this as a "final, forever bike". So far the bike, the Pinion
system, and belt drive, have exceeded my high expectations. The grip shift
control did limit my use of swept back bars like an albatross, but the
Jones H-bar is proving a good compromise. There is an after market thumb
shifter available, but I am waiting for Pinion to produce one someday or
for the aftermarket one to get more longterm reviews.
all the best,
Erl

Re: [RBW] Re: September 10 Blahg, drive train gearing development

2021-09-18 Thread WETH
Hi Patrick,
Thanks.
No, I do not notice drag, though others, who scientifically measure such
things, do. With a steel frame, Riv Saddlesack, racks, front basket, and a
suburban/urban commuters cadence and pace, I do not feel a difference. Nor
do I see a time nor average speed difference compared with my derailleur
equipped RBT. (I actually thought the 650bx48 tires on the Bantam would be
noticeably slower than the 700 x 38 tires on my RBT.) The whole
Pinion/belt interface is so smooth; it is sublime. My Onyx instant
engagement rear hub eliminated any engagement delay that is often cited as
a drawback to the Pinion system.
Here are two articles about the Pinion; the second speaks to "drag".
https://www.cyclingabout.com/tour-with-a-pinion-gearbox/

All the best,

2021-08-26 Thread WETH
I bought a 59cm 700c Campeur from Velo Orange in December 2018 and never
got around to building it up. Now, I have too many other projects. I
mounted a pair of wheels into the drop outs with a few resulting paint
scuffs, otherwise the bike is perfect. Included in the price are unmounted
50mm 700c VO snakeskin fenders and Tektro CR710 Low-Profile Cantilever
brakes bought from Velo Orange along with the frame and never used.

Price: $500 PayPal for local pickup/delivery in the Washington, DC area;
$650 shipped (if LBS and Bike Flights charge me less, I will refund the
difference.) (Would prefer a local sale)

I think you described this camera in another thread as being old technology or
something similar. It reminded me of this:
“A photographer went to a socialite party in New York. As he entered the front
door, the host said, ‘I love your pictures – they’re wonderful; you must have a
fantastic camera.’
The photographer said nothing until dinner was finished, then: ‘That was a
wonderful dinner; you must have a terrific Stove.'”
Deacon Patrick you are an artist. It’s all about finding the proper gear that
allows us to capture our vision! Well done! I’ll look forward Ron more

The ride was so-so. I have an SA X1 which I love. The R2 was not as

the X1 are longer than the rails on the R2 and X2, so I can get the X1 just
enough farther back to be in the perfect position.

[RBW] Semi OT post? - What bike would you take to the Himalayan foothills? And would you even go?

2020-03-22 Thread WETH
Addison,
As a fellow educator who has long been intrigued by the prospect of the
international school circuit, I say go for it! It speaks to you or you
wouldn’t have gotten this far. You and your wife are great teachers, or you
wouldn’t have been offered the jobs. Spending a portion of their formative
years in different countries is a priceless gift to your children. When you
are ready to return to the USA, you should have no trouble finding teaching
jobs, if the experiences of friends are any indication. Happy to connect you
with friends of mine who worked in international schools and/or still do. Reply
off list if interested.

[RBW] Thinking about cycling for me in the future....

2020-01-30 Thread WETH
Paul,
So sorry to learn about your close call. I have had a few close calls on my
bike with cars. I’ve been able to keep riding, though at least one encounter
had me quite shaken. All this to express my understanding with your situation.
It is not hard for me to imagine that at some point I will feel as you do; I
dread that day. Are there multipurpose trails in your area where you could ride
and be more at ease?

[RBW] 2020 Goals

2019-12-23 Thread WETH
A great topic!
My goal this year was to rider farther than last year. I achieved that by
riding more than 3300 miles mostly commuting.
Goals for this year include breaking that record and fitting in a few more
overnights and a multi day tour. I also have a Bantam custom in the pipeline
for late 2020.
For tracking miles, I use an app called Cyclemeter, so I just need to have my
phone with me , which I do anyway.

Re: [RBW] MIT Atlantis and chain length

2019-07-03 Thread WETH
I can’t speak for all models, but they have this text at the end of the
description for Cheviots:
“NOTE ON CHAIN LENGTH: Because the chainstays of the 55 and 60 Cheviot are
longer than a normal bike, you will need to use two chains, or 120-124ish
links, depending on your drivetrain configuration. Start with 6 extra lynx and
use your best judgement. The chain is the right length when it pulls the
derailer cage free of and parallel to the chain itself when wrapped around the
smallest cog and the smallest chainring -- i.e., the derailer cage will be
flexed slightly. Here's the venerable Sheldon Brown's method, for an alternate
take.”

2019-02-15 Thread WETH
Patrick,
I’ve been following this with interest. I also have no single/fixed speed
background. I was following along with the flip hub concept, but am lost as to
how 2-3 chainrings would work. Chain tool to adjust chain length? Some other
method I’m too obtuse to see that allows you to deal with cabin length when you
change rings? Sorry to make you explain the “ah ha”, but I’d love to
understand more.
Thanks,

[RBW] Kickstand tire rub

Hi Bob,
I had a similar issue with my 56cm Hunq and 650bx2.4 tires. I called Riv and

A pictures worth a 1,000 words: https://flic.kr/p/2a71pS1
So, I’d call Riv if you haven’t.

[RBW] 650b vs. 700c Atlantis: anyone with experience?

2018-12-16 Thread WETH
Mark,
Another significant difference will be the chainstay length. The new Atlantis
has longer by 7cm. I used to own an Atlantis, older style 56cm with 26”
wheels. I currently own a newer style 56cm Hunq with 650b wheels. The longer
stays make for a more stable feeling ride. Others will be able to describe the
difference longer stays make more articulately.
If you live near Washington DC you are welcome to test ride my 56cm Hunq.

Dear Patrick,
I think it is pants from a pair of pants which is a shortened form of
“pantaloons.” Pantaloon was a singular leg cover hence a pair of pantaloons or

[RBW] Re: Billie bar / choco bar

2018-10-04 Thread WETH
Jason,
I switched from albatross to flipped albastache bars, so I get a bit of
rise. The position of the brake levers keep my hands forward like on a
flat bar, but I can hold the bars on the swept back portion when I want to
be more upright. Photos: https://flic.kr/p/MX3cbk,

Best wishes,

[RBW] Aspen Aurora

2018-09-18 Thread WETH
Patrick,
you capture the light perfectly in this set of photographs! What a beautiful
place. Your posts often, and this one in particular, remind me of one of my
favorite Wendell Berry poems:

i
Make a place to sit down.
Sit down. Be quiet.
You must depend upon
affection, reading, knowledge,
skill—more of each
than you have—inspiration,
work, growing older, patience,
for patience joins time
to eternity. Any readers
who like your poems,
doubt their judgment.

ii
Breathe with unconditional breath
the unconditioned air.
Shun electric wire.
Communicate slowly. Live
a three-dimensioned life;
stay away from screens.
Stay away from anything
that obscures the place it is in.
There are no unsacred places;
there are only sacred places
and desecrated places.

iii
Accept what comes from silence.
Make the best you can of it.
Of the little words that come
out of the silence, like prayers
prayed back to the one who prays,
make a poem that does not disturb
the silence from which it came.

Safe travels,
Erl

Chris,
Congratulations on the new Hunq. Having owned an LHT and several Rivs, the

have them completed.

If you need a lot of height try this

I used it on a bike and had no issue ordering from American Cyclery.

I have been eyeing those. Thanks for heads up on the discount. Might still be
a bit too pricey for my budget, but I have a few days to ponder. Do you have
the smock? Did you size up to allow layering underneath or does the garment
fit loose in your recommended size (going by chest measurement)?
Thanks again
