Kellie-Those pictures are great. Eric Benjamin does a good job capturing the emotions of the event. I would like to point out that while the pictures show the DK200 racers struggling through the mud, the Half Pint 100 and 50 DK Lite riders had to endure this same mud pit of hell. Andy-I had pretty good look using the Force Field Fatty Rumpkins again this year. The were able to shed the mud and I had no flats. I'll have to check out the dedicated mud tires. Several folks used fat bikes, but it was my understanding that they did not fair any better in the mud. I'm going to take a look at the Paul Racer centerpulls. Sounds like they might give me a little extra clearance over the Tektro R559 sidepulls. That first muddy section was anything but fun and I just about called it quits, but I was inspired by the people I helped and who helped me. My shoulders and back are still sore. The rest of my journey turned out great. Because I didn't have to worry about hitting a checkpoint on time, I was able to get some great pictures and take in the beauty and remoteness of the Flint Hills. I rode about 20 miles with a father and his two adults sons. It was the father's dream to get his sons together to experience this ride and they seemed to be having the time of their lives. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Dirty Kanza
Sorry I missed you Tony! I think I set a new personal record for the slowest 50 miles I've ever hidden, but I took my time and met a lot of really great people along the way. That 2-3 mile section of mud about 11 miles in was truly brutal. I quickly learned that the sidepull brakes are absolutely awful in thick mud. I could not get 10 feet before my wheels would seize up and I ended up carrying my bike 2 miles before I finally climbed a fence and pushed it through the grass. I eventually pulled my wheels off and spent about 25 minutes digging out the mud, clay, rocks, and grass. Next year I will be bringing the Bombadil if the conditions are as similiar. Here are some pics of my experience... https://www.flickr.com/photos/101678932@N02/sets/72157653811400305 On Sunday, May 31, 2015 at 8:50:22 PM UTC-5, Tony McG wrote: I wish I had seen this before I left town Thursday morning. [RBW] Re: Betty, Rumpkins, fenders
FWIW, I have a 650b Sam with the silver sidepulls, but the clearances should be similar to your Betty. I ran the Rumpkins with the crème P45 Longboards for a while but the fit was very tight. I switched to the new P50 Longboards and used Sheldon's fender nuts and got a much better fit with the Rumpkins. The fender nut really helps in the front to raise the back of the fender through the fork crown and get it up off the tire. The P50 Longboards are not as long as the P45's and work better on a 650b bike in my opinion. I am currently running Compass Babyshoe Pass EL's and they also fit very well under the P50's. They are about 0.5 cm wider than the Rumpkins according to my calipers. On Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 8:13:10 PM UTC-5, Michael Hechmer wrote: Last year I bought my wife the Betty demo bike as they were going out of production. Of course it came as a complete package, including fenders. When I put it together, it took me a long time to get the fenders to fit around the 40 mm tires. Today I pulled the bike out of the basement for Pat and tried to get it ride ready for the season and again found myself struggling with the front fender. The rear is easy, the front a bear. This time I put a caliper on the fenders and discovered they were only 45 mm wide. No wonder I'm not getting them to run smoothly. I assume ( ?? ) the number on a pair of SKS fender refers to the fender width and that these are cream colored SKS 45 fenders. So what to do? Replace the fenders or the tires? The RBW site recommends the P50 with these tires but that also seems pretty tight, with just 5mm clearance on each side. Should I go to the P55? Also I have never liked the flexibility of plastic fenders and am suspicious of fenders that are recommended for 700, 650, 26 tires at the same time.VO offers Al. fenders that are just 52 mm wide which also seems to small. Peter White recommends a minimum of 18 mm between the tire size and the fender size for metal, and my experience confirm the wisdom of this. This brings me to Honjos from Jitensha or Compass. Great fenders and at 58 mm just about perfect in size. I assume they will fit under the silver brakes, but I guess I'm not certain. (This is one reason I'm a canti fan.) The down side is the price - $149 Or I could just buy a slightly smaller tire. The RBW (Soma) offerings are listed as 34/35 mm actual. Compass offers two at 38 mm, which may be enough to clear these fenders. What to do? I'd like to learn from people who ride Betty's and may have already worked through this. [RBW] Re: 2.35 Knobbies on a Parallel TT Bombadil?
Do the 650b Smart Sam's run true to the listed 2.1/54mm size or do they run a little smaller like most Schwalbe tires? I measured the Quasi-Motos brand new at max pressure on 23mm Synergy rims. They were about 51.5mm-slightly larger than the listed size of 2.0/51mm and they will probably stretch a little over time. They fit just about perfect, but I could probably go about 2mm larger. [RBW] Re: SKS LongBoard Question
I had the new P55 Longboards on my old XO-2 and currently have the new P50 Longboards on my 650b Hillborne. The new P50 Longboards are definitely longer than the P55 Longboards and even the fender itself appear to be a little longer than the old P50's without the flaps (I have a set of those as well). None are near as long as the original P45 Longboards however (got those too). The new P50's fit my Hillborne with 650b x 41 Fatty Rumpkins just about perfectly, but I am using Sheldon's Fender Nuts to get the front fender a little higher and flatter in the fork crown for clearance. In particular if the p55s are the same overall length as the p50. I'd prefer the extra width of the p55, but I definitely want the extra length. Tim, Is your brother-in-law named Paul? He was one of the guys I rode with and seem to remember him telling me he had a bro-in-law with a Rodeo. I think you would be undertired and maybe underbiked with your combo. I'm not sure how capable the Roadeo is, but it is probably better than a lot of the carbon cross bikes I saw last year. I have the Stampede Pass Extralights on my Bridgestone RB-T and would be afraid of those paper thin sidewalls getting slashed. I'd also want a tire with a little more volume for comfort over the 100 miles of rough roads. Maybe a Jack Brown Blue (tougher version) or a 33-35 cross tire with some puncture protection would fit the Roadeo. I used the 650b x 41 Force Field Fatty Rumpkins last year because I was paranoid of getting flats after hearing all the stories of the flint shredding tires. I did see probably 15 riders flat in the 26 miles I road. Tire selection is a hot topic for the DK. I will probably ride with the Rumpkins again, but I'm tempted to try the new 650b BG Rock n Roads or Soma Cazaderos. Tony here on the list unlike me actually road the entire course so may e he'll chime in. The terrain varies from smooth crushed gravel to fist size rocks and washouts on the unmaintained roads and I know there is at least one creek crossing in the Half Pint. There was also a little mud last year that I had some trouble in. Hope you decide to do it! Haha, small world! I met Paul through our riding group sponsored by Velo+ in Lenexa. I've ridden a little gravel with the Nifty Swiftys which I believe are just the 650b version of the JB's. As expected they rolled faster but we're noticeably rougher riding than the Rumpkins. I was running them at the minimum pressure listed on the sidewall. They did measure wider than advertised at 34.5 on synergy rims. If you can fit 35mm tires on the Roadeo, ride light, and pick your lines well, I think the Roadeo will do great. Your Hilsen would be even better, IMHO. The reason I was considering my Bombadil this year is because it doesn't weigh much more than my Sam and I can run just about any 650b tire. My Sam was 25ish pounds stripped down and the Bombadil surprised me weighing in at 26.1 pounds on a digital scale. I'm sure your Roadeo is considerably lighter than both of those and that weight really does make a difference on a long haul. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: Is the Bleriot/Honjos/ Hetres clearance I have not enough?
FYI, I run Fatty Rumpkins (they measure a true 41mm) under SKS P50 Longboards on my Sam. The P50's were a pretty tight fit when I first installed them, but I was able to get at least a couple of mm of additional clearance under the front sidepull by using Sheldon's Fender Nuts and mounting the fender behind the crown. They pull the fender up a little higher behind the crown. I now have at least 1cm clearance all around. Not sure how well they would work with the Honjo's however. On Monday, November 10, 2014 11:58:24 PM UTC-6, lungimsam wrote: Hello, I recently installed H50 Honjos on the Bleriot with my Hetres, as you may recall from an earlier post. I have between what looks like 1-2cm clearance all around. Tightest are under the sidepull brakes. That's the max I can get. Tires spin fine, no rubbing. No rattling. But on the two commutes I did this week, I repeatedly heard pebbles and rocks rattling through the fenders as I rode over them. Does this indicate that the clearances are not ample? Do I need to go to a narrower/smaller tire? I have SKS Longboards and Hetres on my Sam bike and I rarely hear rocks going through, though the clearances look similar to what I have on the Bleriot. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Deacon, so it sounds like you have 0 standover on the Quickbeam? That's where I'm at on the 56cm Atlantis. I can straddle the top tube with both feet flat on the ground with my shoes, not so much in socks. I recently slid forward off the saddle for the first time riding some rough terrain on the 51cm Sam Hillborne and was happy to have that extra 3cm of clearance. That is my biggest hang up with the Atlantis, but maybe I can live with it. Sounds like you ride the rough stuff and have had no problems. I know it fits me comfortably horizontally with the Albatross bars and may even work with my drop bars and a 7cm stem. I would have about 3.5 fingers of seatpost showing on the 56. Yes, Mark at RBW said he was a 82 pbh and felt most comfortable on a 54.5. I think the recommended minimum pbh on the 56 is 82 or 83. [RBW] FS/WTT New-in-the box Waterford Atlantis 56cm
https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-o3XgYwYn8vI/VEqs9H-76JI/BW0/ESvG7xSUoek/s1600/IMG_1740.JPG Hey all, I picked this frame up from a fellow Riv fan locally and was hoping to transfer most of the parts over from my Alba-bar 51cm Sam. After spending some time on the phone with the guys at Riv, I am not so sure now that I'm going to be happy with the fit as it's borderline too big. I am 5'7 with a 81 PBH. It is still in the original packaging and I only pulled it out to inspect it for damage and snap some pics. I am asking $1850 plus shipping, but I am open to other offers or possibly trading for an 53 or 54.5 Atlantis, 48 or 51 Hunqapillar, 48 Bombadil, or even a 54 Hilsen that is new or in decent shape. This is the brand new Waterford frame that Riv sells for $2300. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Fred Matheny roadbikerider.com Compass tire review...on a Roadeo!
Sorry to take this post further off topic, but regarding goatheads, I recently inadvertantly road my Sam through a nasty patch and picked up at least 20 in each Force Field Fatty Rumpkin tire and have yet to have a flat. The longest thorns were maybe 3cm. Needless to say, I am continually impressed by how though these tires are! I can remember riding the same area as a kid and having to use tuffy liners and slime in my bmx tires as I was continually getting flats. I just put the Compass extralight Stampedes on my RB-T and am not sure I would try the same, though they do ride nice! -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Re: I raced my Riv.
The gravel in Flint Hills of Kansas is notorious for shredding tires. Its not unusual for people to get 6 flats during the race. Consider that the Native Americans used the flint for their arrowheads. Just google Dirty Kanza tire choice sometime if you are up for some light reading... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. [RBW] Re: I raced my Riv.
Tony, I hear you about the tunnel vision. On the car ride along the route back to Emporia, I realized I had passed several herds of cattle and not even noticed them. Maybe coming from a rural background I'm just used to being around cattle. The Sam handled the rough roads beautifully! I've even taken it out on some smoother single track and am surprised at how capable it is. I actually swapped out the albatross bars for noodle drop bars two days before the race. IMHO, the alba bars are hands down the most comfortable bars I've ever ridden, but it's hard to get a good aero position and I like the brakes out front when riding down the rough and lose hills. They seemed to be a better choice for the DK especially if the winds would have been stronger. I went with cork tape versus shellacked cloth on the drops to dampen some of the vibration. I figured either the Force Field Fatty Rumpkins or Schwalbe Marathons were the best options for riding roads covered in sharp flint. Not a lot of other options in 650b. I could not believe how many riders were flatting. I saw a least a couple people flat in the first mile or two. I will probably save the Rumpkins for next years DK and go with a lighter, faster, more supple tire. I was also running them at 45 PSI and probably should have gone lower. How did the roads in the DK compare to the Alamanzo and Trans-Iowa. I also should have used a Revelate type frame bag with a bladder and easy access to food. The Riv Boxy Bag I used for food and energy supplements swayed a lot and the zippers were hard to open while riding. I also would have preferred not to use my Camelback. Like you Tony, I went a little overboard and was too much stuff. Chad -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Those pics are awesome. Despite my failed BB, I still had a blast and plan to be there again next year with my Sam! [RBW] Re: I raced my Riv.
Tony, you were not the only Riv in the Dirty Kanza this year. I was riding my new Sage Green 650B Sam in the Half Pint and saw you pass me when we first hit gravel. I also saw your Atlantis outside the theatre Friday night and had to take a pic since I figured the Rivs would be few and far between in the DK. Unfortunately, I had to drop out at the water stop 28 miles in because my bottom bracket went out. I was really disappointed since I probably had less than 200 miles on the Sam and was just getting in to the fun part of the race. I will say the 28 miles I rode were tough and I'm not sure I could of made the full 111. This was my first endurance event, but definitely not my first time on gravel. My goal was to at least make it to the 59 mile checkpoint. The guys I rode with that finished were pretty beat up. I can't imagine doing 200. FWIW, most of the guys I rode with were running Clements MSO 40mm or Surly Knards and did not have any flats. I was running the Force Field Fatty Rumpkins and also had no problems. I can't believe how many people were flatting! Chad in KC On Monday, June 2, 2014 9:21:13 PM UTC-5, Tony McG wrote: My Atlantis was not the only Rivendell in the Almonzo 100, but I am pretty sure that there was not another Riv in the Dirty Kanza 200 or Half Pint. The bike performed flawlessly except for my sloppy friction shifting. About a year ago, I drove up to Spring Valley, MN and rode with Jim Thill and a bunch of country bike cyclist on the Almonzo 100 course. After that experience, I decided that gravel was a lot safer and more scenic than riding on pavement. I built a Surly LHT into a gravel grinder and started riding with Guitar Ted on Saturday mornings for a 3-hour gravel ride. I found the Atlantis on this forum and realized that it was a much nicer ride than the Trucker; the Surly has been hanging in the garage since. I wasn't out to win, just finish. I haven't heard where I placed in the Almonzo, but I finished the DK Half Pint in the top 1/4 of the starters and the top 1/3 of the finishers. I carried too much stuff, and should have run lower air pressure in the tires. I was afraid of pinch flats on the cattle grates, but I was able to wheelie or hop the bike over most of them. After the race, one of the more experienced riders suggested 35# in the front and 40# in the back; I was running 45# in both of the Schwalbe Dureme 700cX40. I am looking forward to trying the Half Pint (111 miles) again next year, but I doubt if I will ever do the 200. After 8 hours of gravel, wind, hills, heat, and sun, I am ready to get off of the bike. https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-JlyB_Hn0W2E/U40w_8fY_OI/ACk/U43mvfA3SuQ/s1600/DK_1225-%28ZF-0500-46390-1-001%29.jpg I love this bike and really love passing guys half my age on carbon fiber 'cross bikes... -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group.
