And the hunqapillar and seat post are sold!

Also have a Nitto big front rack, same thing, a few dings here and there
but p great shape. *$150*

Paul Touring Canti Brake, Silver* $75*

Paul Neo Retro Brake, Silver* $75*

These prices don't include shipping, will figure out whatever shipping
costs are and pass them along to you. If you want the Hunq and don't live
in Portland, I will try and find a place to box and ship. More pics, but
couldn't figure out how to get them to post.

Philip,

You’ve got it!! This is exactly what I’m looking for. I’m going to try it with
my next mustache bar (I don’t currently have one).

This is awesome, I didn’t think it’d be possible. Anything special to note with
how you did the conversion?

Cheers,

Re: [RBW] Re: Weird handlebar idea

2020-08-08 Thread Zack Medow
So I maybe didn't describe this well enough. Just imagine a mustache bar
but with the brake hoods in the standard position for a drop bar. So it's
like a normal dop bar, but all parts of the bar are on the same plane. The
idea is to have a normal hoods position, plus a swoop back part of the bar
that's on the same level with the drops.

[RBW] Weird handlebar idea

2020-07-28 Thread Zack Medow
Ok so for me the perfect road handlebar would allow me to run drop bar break
levers in the typical way for “endurance” riding, then with back sweep to allow
me to sit up and change my back angle. Basically I’m visualizing this as an
albastache bar but with the break levers vertical instead of horizontal. Or
like a dirt drop, but with all the hand positions existing on the same plane.

I could see how you’d do this by bending the tubes down in the way you
typically would on a drop bar, and then sideways and back for the sit-up
position. Has anyone ever seen a bar like this? Is this a very stupid idea?

RBW Owners Bunch I need your help!

I'm looking to venture into the world of my first Rivendell/Bridgestone.

I'm at an impasse right now. I'm thinking of putting in an order for a
Roadini and set it up with the new Shikoro 38mm tires Riv is carrying. But
there's also a mint condition XO-1 right now on eBay in my size.

I'm going to be using this bike for road and city riding, maybe some very
light grav grav. I have a Jones for a trail bike, so that's not really a
concern. My goal is to find a supple steel bike that fits a wider tire
without resorting to a disc break and the stiff fork that comes with it.

Which one would you go for?? Is this a silly comparison??

GP would probably say that they have loads of bikes like that. More mounts =
weight = any of their touring oriented models. But if you’re referring to
cheaper tig welded models, then yes I definitely agree.

Hey all -

Am thinking about selling my 62 cm Hunq frameset. It's in great condition
with a bit of beusage. Kidney bean and grey paint. Have some other things I
could throw in (seatpost, crank, Paul brakes) if you are going to build it
up from scratch and want a head start.

Can add pics soon.

Located in Portland, OR, can ship, but would want to do it through local
bike shop rather than box myself.

Start at $1500 for F/F/HS? Plus shipping if you aren't here? Not sure what
good condition Hunqs should be selling for, life stuff has pulled me away
from having my finger on the pulse of Rivendell pricing. If I am too low or
too high please let me know.

[RBW] Re: New Rivendell

2016-07-09 Thread Zack
I liked them so much I made
these: http://www.cafepress.com/doubletoptubesrule

But seriously, it's all good, the function that they provide (strength on
the bigger frame, a nice place to grab when you lift the bike, etc) far
outweighs any downside from a design standpoint.

I think my 2TT Sam is a beautiful bike, and often hear the same from others
who see it.

[RBW] Re: FS: Big Guy Wool

2016-04-26 Thread Zack
let's make it *$20 *for the sleeveless, i never wear it.

adding a blue striped and purple striped long-sleeve, both size xl. the
purple one has some problems with the hem, the thread came loose, it
actually came this way from riv but i didn't bother with fixing it or
contacting them to fix, it looks just fine. both worn lightly.

*$45* for the blue, $*30* for the purple.

Ibex Boucle, Dark Madder Heather, XL. Also worn a couple times. No real
signs of wear, but you could probably find some if you went crazy searching
for them. Zips up. Nothing *screams*cardigan about it, let alone says
cardigan, but that's what they call it. It is warmer than a baselayer,
it's pretty thick, good for cold mornings. *$75* Pic here:

Add $5 for shipping for first item, free after that.

[RBW] Wheel not centered?

2016-03-18 Thread Zack
Hey All -

Question for ya.

I have a 64 cm canti Sam, I switched tires to Rock n Roads, and I don't
have enough clearance between the chainstays. Plenty of room everywhere
else.

The odd part of it is the wheel is closer to the left chainstay than to the
right. It's not a huge difference, maybe 4-5 mm, but I feel like if the
wheel was centered, the tires would fit. I double checked to make sure the
tire was sitting correctly in the dropouts, no dice.

Any ideas on why the tire might not be centered between the stays?

[RBW] Re: More Sam Love--and do you ride your Riv through winter?

2015-07-20 Thread Zack
I rode my sam through vermont winters. I had this same dilemma, was
thinking about finding a winter beater, then figured why ride a bike i
don't love in the winter?

I frame-savered the frame, wiped it off after riding, and then gave it a
deeper clean every once in a while. i would say it probably made the
drivetrain age faster, but the frame and everything else is fine.

good luck!

[RBW] Re: Compass Barlow Pass Tires

2015-04-29 Thread Zack
hmm.

i have barlow passes on my sam. i am not sure they make me a whole lot
faster. i sure do think they are more comfortable to ride, and i feel like
i can ride much longer, and the bike rolls better. i replaced some
marathons as well.

i think it's like running in hiking boots and then putting sneakers on. i
may not be way faster in sneakers than i am in boots, but it sure is more
comfortable to run.

(just wanted to say this in case someone came across this thread and was
somehow dissuaded from trying some new tires, the barlow passes are the
single biggest improvement i have made to my bike since i actually bought a
riv that fits)

[RBW] Re: Clydesdale's -- Which Riv Model are you riding?

2015-03-26 Thread Zack
First, and most importantly, talk to the guys at Riv about any and all
sizing and weight/height issues. They will not ever steer you wrong. If
you aren't near enough to SF to visit Walnut Creek, follow the instructions
explicitly for measuring your PBH. At Riv, if the best option is the
cheapest option, they will tell you so. It's a different buying experience
than at 99% of the places you buy things in the world. They are awesome,
they will help you, and that is good. You won't get any pressure sales
tactics, I would say it's more like talking with a genius friend about what
might work best for your situation.

Next: I am 6'3, of varying weights depending on how many pizzas donuts and
carrot cakes i am consuming at any given time, from about 215 to 250. I
have a Sam and a Hunq. Both are most excellent bikes. I just got back
from a camping overnight on the Sam, loaded up, and it was totally fine. I
have the 64 cm double top tube. I don't ever think about putting too much
stuff on the Sam. I certainly don't think about it on the Hunq. I took
the Sam because it currently has fenders on it and the Hunq doesn't. The
Sam rides better when there is less stuff on it (but is still eminently
rideable when carrying a load), the Hunq feels better when it's loaded up,
but is still fun to ride when it isn't!

[RBW] Re: Go fast-ish tires on the Hillborne

2015-03-12 Thread Zack
John -

I think the compass tires are blissful, light-ish, and go-fastish tires
which are perfect for road riding in the summertime on the Hillborne. The
Supremes, not so much.

I have yet to get a flat on the compass barlow pass extra lights. Fingers
crossed, but it just hasn't happened yet, with about a year of riding on
them. They are most excellent, and the ride is so so smooth.

I'd go for the barlow pass 38's. Supple is v nice. I also had marathons
on the sam before switching to the compass. I prefer the compass by a
goodly amount.

Good luck!

[RBW] How to Beat Old Man Winter: Tips for Sailors in Cold Climates … How to Avoid Colds, Thaw Out Frozen Fingers

2015-02-10 Thread Zack
I thought you all would get a kick out of this, based on recent
winter-based clothing conversations. It's from the January 1944 *All Hands*,
which is (was?) the official magazine of the US Navy. It's like it was
written by Deacon Patrick!

Here is the link to the article:
 http://156.112.98.23/library/online/uniform_cold.htm#how

*How to Beat Old Man Winter: Tips for Sailors in Cold Climates … How to
Avoid Colds, Thaw Out Frozen Fingers*

Howling wind, driving rain and sleet, mountainous waves of icy salt water
 - pity the poor sailor on a night like this! Yet, you can beat old man
winter at his own game. What it takes is knowledge about what kind of
clothing to wear, how to act under varying weather conditions, what
 first-aid may be necessary.

You know from personal experience that sometimes, even when you get all
bundled up from red flannels to peajacket, you still can't keep the upper
hand over winter cold. Maybe you've been on watch, heavily clothed, and
step inside to warm up a bit. You don't take off your outfit, or even open
it up - because you're cold and you want to warm up fast before going back.

Well, you warm up fine, even begin to perspire. Then you step out again
and find you get cold very quickly. You feel chilled to the bone, commence
to shiver, and you're much more uncomfortable than before having gone
 indoors.

This is what happened: You got cold while you were on the first part of
your watch because your body was losing heat. Your body stores heat inside
and also produces heat as the result of digestion of food and physical
activity. However, the low temperature and wind had taken away much of this
heat and had caused the blood vessels supplying the skin (particularly in
the fingers and feet) to contract. Much less blood was flowing to the parts
and thus they got less heat.

When you came inside, the clothing began to absorb heat while the body
gradually began to warm up. The body had filled itself with heat and was
again ready to begin giving off extra heat. The blood vessels had opened up
and circulation increased. Since you did not take off your heavy clothing
this extra heat could not get away and soon the skin temperature rose so
 high that sweating began.

Doctors who have studied these matters know that when this happens the
body gives off heat about four times faster than usual. Your clothing got
damp from perspiration and began to take away heat at a faster rate than
normally. So when you went out-of-doors again the more exposed parts of the
body lost a great deal of heat into the atmosphere, and your damp clothes
took away a lot more heat. These losses were so rapid and so great that
they immediately caused pain. As a matter of fact, in a short time you lost
more heat than you lost during the whole time of your early watch.

Another angle is that when you were first outside you had been exercising
somewhat and your body was producing extra heat. When you came inside your
activities stopped and your body also stopped producing extra heat and
instead soon began to lose heat. When you went outside again, therefore,
your body was not producing heat to help keep you warm, but rather was
 working the other way.

Now if you can take the pain which comes along with this reaction until
the body readjusts itself, you'll be fairly comfortable. However, your
clothing is going to be rather damp and the whole discomfort is unnecessary
if you follow a few reasonable rules based on the scientific facts of what
the doctors called body heat balance. These rules are:

 1. Immediately upon coming indoors, shed your outer heavy clothing and
gloves. Avoid yielding to the temptation of warming up rapidly by retaining
all of your clothing protection, especially if additional outdoor work is
 scheduled.

 2. Avoid sweating. It will dampen clothing and start heat loss when you go
 out again.

 3. Stay indoors only long enough to get reasonably comfortable. If you get
too warm you will upset your body heat balance when you go outside again.

 4. If your hands and feet are cold, a change to dry gear will afford
 relief.

Putting on lots of clothing doesn't mean you're going to keep warm.
There's a right way and wrong way to keep warm, based on scientific fact.

There are three layers of clothing involved in protecting yourself from
winter cold. These are the underwear layer, the insulation layer, and the
 wind-and-water-resistant layer.

*Underwear* is one of the most important elements of cold-weather
clothing. It serves as sort of a heat filter to slow down body heat loss
and at the same time to take excess moisture away from the body. Underwear
should be form fitting, moderately dense, lightweight, soft but with
sufficient body to withstand compression. One-piece woolen underwear is
preferred since it absorbs a large amount of perspiration, keeps the body
 relatively dry, eliminates

[RBW] Re: The Worst

2015-02-03 Thread Zack
I too support the wurst!

This is actually timely, despite my joke about the dude who wrote the
best article, as I have just done a huge culling of extraneous stuff in
my life which coincided with a move (the culling was more about getting rid
of things I only sort of liked and didn't really use - a classification of
things which has a way of dominating a space - than about a quest for the
best, but I definitely ended up keeping almost everything which I think is
close to the best. And concur that it's a good reminder that the worst
has something to teach us and can have significance in our lives (which is
prob the point of having stuff at all, to add some sort of significance or
utility to our lives) too.

Reminds me a bit of the first bike that I rode when I got back into riding
as an adult. It was a 53 cm Trek 520. Those of you who have seen me in
person prob just got a great fat guy on a little bike visual (!) and I
was actually probably 40 pounds heavier than I am now. I received the Trek
as a gift, and rode it back and forth to work for about a year. It was
pretty much the worst, like running a marathon in sneakers FIVE sizes too
small haha. (Great bike for a short person though, it's definitely some
short person's best, somewhere). At any rate I learned that I loved
riding and could do it every day in Vermont, that it could be a useful mode
of transportation as an adult, figured out how to fix a flat, do some minor
maintenance and upkeep, lost the 40 pounds or so, and treated the Trek with
love. Also, since it happened to be a steel framed road bike, it caused me
to go to Old Spokes Home when I decided it was time to upgrade to a
different bike (I actually didn't even know how small the Trek was for me
at the time), and I think I imagined getting either a fixie or a carbon
road bike, as was the style at the time, and they were like uh, why
don't you get a steel tourer, you won't regret it. that's what we all
ride. And that Trek turned into a Salsa Casseroll from OSH, which was a
sweet bike, and that steel touring bike search term led me to find
Rivendell, which I do consider the best, for me, which led to saving up
some loot and getting my Sam as a present to myself for finishing my MBA,
which meant I had a bike that fit me really well which I could ride pretty
much wherever I wanted to go, which has been awesome.
