[RBW] Re: Riv Bike Evolutionary Succession

2013-09-07 Thread Bicyclebill
This is all great stuff and fun reading. Am I missing something or is the
Bleriot being overlooked? I think it preceded the Saluki into the 650B
realm.

let's say I'm a Rambouillet owner and am riding along and get stopped by
someone who is curious about and interested in the bike. The most I would
be able to tell them is that it is the successor to what Riv once called a
Long-Low, though not precisely the same. What I'd really like to be able
to tell them is 1) the differences between these two models and why one
replaced the other, 2) the succession of bikes since the Rambouillet up to
the current model, and 3) the differences between successive models along
the way. In this way the inquirer would have a complete picture of the
Rivendell company/business philosophy toward bikes and be more likely to
make a future purchase. I don't know if Riv has ever published something
like this or if it's ever been hashed over someplace in a blog thread, but
it would be very worthwhile info to have.

[RBW] Re: Velocity rim questions from first time 650b owner.

This is very good information as I also have a Bleriot. I'm curious as to
any further thoughts as to the origianl question to tire width availability
in 650B size
.

Being new to Rivs and 650b wheels, I have a couple wheel questions. I hope
you all can clue me in to the scene.

I have Deore hubs with Velocity Rims. Width measures about 3/4 inch.
Velocity Twin Hollow 32 Hole printed on the label.

 1. The Velocity rims on the bike have the heads of the spokes anchored on
the inside of the rims and can contact the tube of the tire. Not recessed,
 like on 700c rims.
Is there any special rim tape I should use for this? I have never seen
this as my 700c bike rims have the recessed spokes. So I was wondering.

 2. Does anyone here use tire liners with their 650b tires? I am used to
using small 700c tires that need protection, and I don't know how the
heavier 650b tires fare in reference to punctures. Let me know what you all
 do.

 3. Will any 32-41mm 650b tires fit those rims of mine? I don't know how
many variations of 650b rims are out there and what the standard width is.
The label does not indicate which width tires the rim will take, though
Rumpkins are on it now. But I'd like to throw on some Niftys, which are
 32mm.

 Thanks for any info.

[RBW] Re: All Rounder vs Bleriot for light touring

2012-04-24 Thread bicyclebill
I have the very same Bleriot (including same size) and love it. The
650B's are great and I've discovered a surprising number of great
tires out there. The one thing that I would have liked is canti
brakes, so the All-Rounder gets the edge there. Also, the A-R appears
to be a complete bike whereas the Bleriot (though cheaper) is not.
Also note the size difference: the Bleriot is 57cm c-c and 59 cm c-t.
The A-R is listed as 57.5 cm c-t, so is a slightly smaller frame.

[RBW] Re: Downtube shifter diehards vs. downtube shifter experimenters

2011-08-02 Thread bicyclebill
This will probably get me a lot of flack but please keep in mind that
one of my non-RBW bike is a Claud Butler, so I'm no enemy of
tradition. Having said that, I believe that each generation of
shifters has represented evolution and that the state of the art has
improved. My Butler originally had Campy downtube shifters and, aside
from the question of reach, they were extremely vague and had a mind
of their own about shifting. Before you get on me about adjustments,
please know that in addition to my own efforts these were adjusted by
very experienced mechanics including those at my LBS, Harris Cyclery.

I then went to Campy bar ends and found the position much better but
the shifting equally vague. From there to Sun Tour bar ends and a
whole new world! Using them in friction mode (I've never tried them
in indexed mode), these are still my favorites. For a couple of
years, I had a Cannondale touring bike with Shimano STI brifters and I
have to say they were a pleasure. I spend most of my time on the tops
and on the hoods and the STI's were convenient, effective and very
reliable. While the STI indexing worked flawlessly, I still prefer
friction and have thus resorted to bar ends on both the Butler (Sun
Tour) and my Bleriot (Shimano).

I've heard the arguments that if you're in Katmandu and your STI's
break down, who's going to fix them. Since the next time I'm in
Katmandu will be the first time, that's a bridge I'm willing to cross
later!

In the interest of full disclosure, I also have a Cervelo Soloist with
Dure Ace STI shifters but that's a completely different story!

no matter what height they are. It may have to do with leg/torso/arm
proportions, but I don't think it's intrinsic to being tall.

I think it's a losing battle to ever encourage someone to switch to
dt's. Probably most new users in this era will be self-motivators who
will try it on their own, and some will stick with it. I like it
really well, but no one was gonna tell me to use such an elegantly
 simple way to shift.

The only time that dt's make one's life demonstrably better is while
 experimenting with stems and bars.

barend shifters.  I'm curious if this is true for other tall riders.

[RBW] Re: New England Riv Ride?

2011-07-18 Thread bicyclebill
Steve's not wrong that this is a CHALLENGE but the routes and people
are fantastic. If you end the day not smiling, then it's been a very
bad day!!

I just checked this year's information on the D2R2 and it's 40 miles
(the bailout route) or your choice of metric 100K, 115K or 180K. The
115K is new and the routes get tweeked every year. The longer routes
sell out first for practical reasons, so if you want to really crank
it, sign up early. For Riv types, it's one of the events most aligned
with folks on this forum. I mentioned Peter Wiegle (who rides by the
way) but the bikes you see are off the charts. Many handbuilt lugged
steel bikes from the best frame builders (Wiegle, Circle A, Iglehart,
Moots, Independaent Fabrication, etc.) things like bamboo and wood
frames, classic 60's - 80's French, British, and Italian, etc. ...
the rest stops are an exercise in bike lust! I generally see a
handfull of Rivs but I never to get to see all the bikes in one
place.

If my bones come together in time, I'll be there. If you want to come
home with a great story to tell, this is it!

[RBW] Re: New England Riv Ride?

2011-07-17 Thread bicyclebill
I'm recovering from shoulder surgery so can't join in. Different
month, but if anyone on the list is in central MA or southern VT on
August 27th, check into the D2R2, one of the best events in New
England. I think they have 40 mile, metric century and regular
century options. Part road but mostly gravel woods roads. Lots of
Riv type bikes and guys like Peter Wiegle show up every year. Harris
Cyclery (of Sheldon Brown fame) is always well represented. The D2R2
doesn't have a web site per se but Google it and you'll get a lot of
info. Modest registration fee goes to a land preservation trust.
Tremendous group of riders - music, food and beer at the end of the
day! Should be on everyone's riding bucket list.

time spent will be riding the Bombadil

Several areas that I plan to visit (for which I'm wondering whether
there's any interest from folks on the forum to meet up and ride) may
 include:

 - Cape Cod / Martha's Vineyard (1-2 day ride)
 - Keene NH to Brattleboro VT (1-2 day on rail trail mostly)
 - Acadia National / Cadillac Mountain

It's just a notion at this point... interested to see if there's any
 mutual interest.

I really liked how easy it was to mount, and un-mount, though.

I've heard the LED light interference problem only really happens with

John,

No offense taken, so no apology needed. As a follower of several
bicycle forums, I was just surprised to find this topic being aired in
this venue. I tend to look to these groups for technical advice,
fellow Riv and vintage owners bikes and experiences, etc. I'm
actually very sympathetic to charitable programs and typically ride 2
or 3 charity events each year (e.g. PanMass Challenge, The Prouty,
D2R2, etc.), so I don't begrudge the cause. Anyway, good luck and
keep up the good work.

That said, it was something we thought was important, and we wanted to
get it out as quickly as possible because many of our customers have
given generously to SmileTrain, and figured folks might be reading
this forum more often than checking our web logs.

As Jim said, we wanted to be ahead of the story, and pro-active in
covering the changes at a charity that we feel strongly about, and
have promoted on our web site (which is extremely RBW-specific, in
case you haven't visited it recently).

Now, back to the regularly scheduled program, already in progress

I've  let this run because John @ Rivbike started it, and it directly
relates to one of the primary Rivendell Bicycle Works supported charities.
There have also been a number of sales and matching agreements on
Rivendell products which benefitted Smile Train.  Not least of which is the
  recent Grilver-colored Sam auction.

My opinion was that it's better to let it run and provide information to
this group, which is highly Riv-centric, rather than have the information
appear through a back-channel which might make it look as though RBW was
less proactive in terms of monitoring a charity they have actively promoted.

Still feel that way, and as long as the discussion remains centered here -
i.e. providing specific information about this issue - rather than spiraling
off into general opinions about non-profits/etc., I'm ok with it.  In fact,
since a few of the RBW items I've bought have benefited the organization,
and I was made aware of it through RBW, it's been interesting to gain this
  info.

bears some further investigation before all of us get worked up about it. I'm
 on the board of the non-profit Worldchanging ( http://worldchanging.com ). I
can tell you absolutely that legally...

 •  no way no how one member of a board and four of his employees can make a
decision that changes how the assets of a non-profit can be distributed.
(Only board members can do this, and it has to be at least a majority if not
 unanimous.)

 •  no way no how one member of a board can fire the Executive Director or any

If the events as described did take place, it'd be fraud and embezzlement.

I suppose it'spossible, since Charles Wang co-founded SmileTrain and donated
$27.5 million to get it off the ground, that SmileTrain by-laws could have
given special privileges and powers to Wang.
