[RBW] Re: Teach me about sealant in tubes?

2019-01-29 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Tubes have to be built with removable valve cores from the start. You can't
swap them out, as it's the entire valve that is different. It's hit or miss
at a LBS when you're trying to find them, so check first.

I've run Stan's in tubes before, and have had marginal success. Maybe 75%
of the punctures (all goathead) sealed. But that means the other 25%
didn't, and that's a problem. You can't field-repair a tube with sealant in
it, as the patch won't adhere to the tube. You can patch it back at home if
you get it clean enough, but it could still be a problem. YMMV of course.

Full tubeless is the way to go. Save your pennies and get a wheelset built
up. I am mostly converted over, and honestly don't ride the bikes that are
not set up tubeless anymore.

[RBW] Re: What epoch of Rivster are you?

2018-10-03 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
This is great, Philip! Way to rule the internets!

I came to Rivendell via B'Stone and iBOB, but from the dirty side. It
started with my MB-2 purchased from Beverly Hills Bikes that was my go-to
ride for many years. So my tastes were formed in the Proto era, but my
finances didn't catch up till the Golden era when I was able to commission
a Joe/Joe custom in 2001. I also had an original Bleriot (shoulda' kept
that one), a second (used) '01 Joe/Joe custom, and have had three different
Quickbeams. My wife had a Glorius, and I would still like to find a larger
one for me! My tastes lean toward single top tubes and shorter stays, and
would love to have a Legolas.

But enough about me...

[RBW] Re: FS: 56cm Rivendell Glorius

2018-07-31 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Interesting story: Upon arrival of the bike, Andy asks me politely if the
seat, front brake, and other misc. parts were included in the sale.
Whaat??? Apparently at some point of the journey north, the secondary
box containing all the parts I took off for packing found a new home. I'm
picturing the chest-buster scene from Alien, but that's how my mind works.

I contacted Bike Flights with the claim over the weekend, and they got back
to me Monday. I forwarded them the pictures of the parts before shipping,
and the ones Andy took of the tampered-with box. By Tuesday morning they
issued me a credit for the missing parts!

Satisfied Bike Flights customer!!!

Keep an eye out on ebay for a Brooks B18 and a Paul Racer front brake...
you know where they came from!

BTW, looking at the Rivbike geometry charts
<https://www.rivbike.com/pages/geometry>, I would say it is pretty close to
the exact geometry of the 61cm Roadeo
<https://www.rivbike.com/collections/framesets/products/roadeo>. You may
notice the price of the Roadeo, and compare that to mine.

FYI, tires aren't that great. Lots of tread (really, I didn't ride this
bike), but the sidewalls are going.

[RBW] Re: FS: 61cm Rivendell Custom

2017-08-31 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
I really do love this bike. But it's literally hanging in the garage
collecting dust and cobwebs. I'm not just blowing smoke when I say that
it's a joy to ride. Definitely faster and spryer than my other bikes. And
having it built by the same guy in the same year as my other custom build
was just a great bonus. My other custom is definitely stouter and designed
to be a trail/multi-surface bike.

If anyone is interested, transportation up the 101 as far north as Santa
Cruz can be arranged. Will happily knock $100 off the price.

I also have a Brooks B17 Champion Special as well as a Professional that
arrangements can be made for. More saddles than I can sit on at one time!

[RBW] Re: PSA: Richard Sachs(!) Rivendell on CL

2017-08-09 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Doug, That's my friend Bryn's bike! You rode with her and Arlo at least
once: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4469017732/

Here's a photo to show how fast she can go on
it: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4469041906/

The frame was made in the transitional years after Joe Stark and Curt
Goodrich stopped building, and when Grant was trying on different builders
for size. Richard Sachs built three Rivendell customs, of which this is
frame number two (RS2).
If it fits you or someone you care about, would be a GREAT road bike.
Classic road geometry, fits a 32mm. I always kept bugging her to do a 650B
conversion on it, as I think it begs for one! Classic garage queen, she
rides her MTB and now her Salsa XC bike a lot more. This one has had
probably less than 50 miles since purchasing the Salsa in 2010. Unmentioned
is that it also has a TA Zephyr triple crankset, the best crankset ever
made according to some highly biased people.

They are flexible on price, so don't let the asking price scare you off.
They're hoping for an off-shore collector type with petro-dollars to burn
that will swoop in and grab it. If that's not you, drop 'em a line and work
something out!

I don't think this was posted yet, apologies if it was. Looks like a good
bike with a couple of extra shiny bits on it. Ahern bars, Paul Comp brakes.
Worn paint, ugly seat post, questionable sticker on top tube (what's he
hiding in there?). Stock crankset and probably wheels. No affiliation with
the seller, just love 'Beams!

[RBW] Re: Opinion on Jitensha Bar

2016-09-30 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
The Jitensha bars work great, but if you want higher/wider, go with the
MAPs. MAPS are more versatile as you can run your stem lower if they're too
high, and even cut them down if too wide.

Re: [RBW] 2017 Redlands Strada Rossa

2016-09-12 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
René, would be great if you could come down! We have plenty of sofa-lodging
available, and if that's not your thing, motels. Philip has come down
before, maybe you can talk him into carpooling south!

Routes change every year, intentionally.

Here is this year's: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/12362448
2015: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/7148234
2014: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/4102226

You can see the similarities, but they are really quite different. I think
this year's was the best. They're all going to be about 60 miles, and have
approximately 6,000 ft of climbing. That's the magic ratio of 10:1,000 to
let you know you're on an interesting ride!

The BIG built in for all the routes, is that there are multiple good
options to cut the route short, and just meander back under your own power
and still enjoy the day. I think just about everyone that has done the ride
has taken advantage of on of those pinch points to bypass a chunk of the
route, but still stay on the course. Shared experience among riders is a
big goal, so we want people to be on the same course no matter how much
they ride.

There is usually a shorter, 50 km/30 mile route option available. Last year
there was also a 100 mile route, but that stretched our resources a bit too
much. May not happen this year, too early to say.

Here are some great photos to build up some
enthusiasm:

[RBW] Re: How Rivendells are received in your city ... (was: Rivvish Shop in Santa Barbara?)

2016-09-12 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Only positive responses from the shops. Interestingly the older guys are
kind of neutral, the younger ones tend to really appreciate it. On the
trails only positive, mixed in with amazement "Your rode up here on
that?!?!?!" from the MTB crowd.

Funniest anecdote was when another rider at a rest stop one day told me I
would be faster with clip in pedals/shoes. He was possibly right, I
chuckled to myself riding off on the Quickbeam, thinking that adding 28
more gear ratios would make me faster as well.

[RBW] Re: 2017 Redlands Strada Rossa

2016-09-12 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Fourth year... We're no longer toddlers! RSR is a fun, challenging,
exhausting, and amazing event. It partly developed from some of the SoCal
Riv Rides that happen occasionally. The idea is to put chunks of dirt
together with nice on-road connectors. 100km/62 miles to make it
challenging, but doable without super-athletic training. Need a bike that
can go anywhere. Self-paced. Sound like anyone you know???

[RBW] Re: 700X42C Tire Recommendation

2016-09-07 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Thanks for that one, Chris.

I'm going to mount up the Nomads languishing in storage. I quit running
them on my single because at lower pressure they really flopped during
cornering and that was a bit disconcerting. I think at the higher pressures
I'd be running on a tandem, they will do great. I don't recall how big they
got, at least 40. Maybe 42 I can't find anything listing max pressure
recommendation for them, hopefully 80psi won't be too much. That will also
let me judge better if the 45mm (nominal) Supremes would fit. That would be
sweet!

To reiterate, nothing wrong at all with the Little Big Bens. They're just a
touch below would I can fit and therefore want to max out capacity. They
measure right at 38mm on the casing, measured between the sipping in the
tread. Their thicker tread would probably feel a bit clunky on a single,
but on the tandem with the extra weight and higher pressure, they feel
good.

2016-09-06 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Bill, I've thought about those, great tires, right! But am just a touch
reluctant to have them on a tandem. The LBBs are just a little too
overkill, and I think the BPs would be a little under. The Supremes are
probably just right, but checking my options before I go on a Bike24 buying
spree! It's an upright meander about sort of tandem, so really it's just me
being picky...
Thanks!

Little Big Bens I'm using now. Those measure about 38mm, and I have room
for a bit more. Would like to maximize flotation! I know there are the
Marathon Supremes listed at 42mm (40mm actual is my guess), and those are
probably my go-to tires. Just wondering if there is anything else out

[RBW] Re: AHH For Loaded Touring?

2016-08-06 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Hi Hunter, there is no rule that says no, you can't use an AHH as a loaded
tourer. Load it up and go! The only downsides are that the frame will be
really flexy with all that weight, and tire size is limited (especially
with fenders). But people have gone touring with flexy bikes and skinny
tires for the last 120 years, so you'll be fine.

The flip side is, if you want a solid bike when you're weighed down, and
want some fat tires with fenders, I think you'll feel limited with an AHH.
An Atlantis would be the better bike to address those shortcomings. My
recommendation would be to get an Atlantis for what you mentioned. If you
want the one bike that does it all, that's the way to go.

YMMV of course.

And we're lighting up the no vacancy sign! Every bed is accounted for,
which is pretty awesome! Working on menu items and Saturday route options.

Saturday is 114% an open ride, we hope many of the locals can come out and
ride around Marin with us for the day. Most likely riding trails from WPI
down to Fairfax, touring the MTB museum, then meandering back up the hill.
A casual pace will be maintained!

Dinner is being cooked by Jacquie that evening, and everyone can join in on
that, whether they are spending the night or not. It's encouraged and hoped
for, actually!
More details to follow!

Thanks to all who jumped on-board for this, it's actually falling into
place perfectly!!!

[RBW] First weekend of riding... ouch.

2016-05-16 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Big weekend of riding for me... the first real riding since I broke my
clavicle on March 9th. Both days this weekend for pleasantly overcast and
temps in the high 60-low 70 range. Perfect days to ride. I started out
"just" ring the local path out to the river. A nice easy rail to trail
grade out and back, right. After getting to the end of it, enjoying the
weather, and seeing the minimal elevation dirt trail in front of me, I had
to give it a try. At least until it gets bumps (it's all bumpy). Oh what
the heck, might as well ride to the end, it's all down-hill from there. Now
at the end, I might as well take the dirt trails back home, they're just as
down-hill as the streets are!
In all, 17 miles with 700 ft of elevation... pretty mellow, but bumpy.

Favorite pic from the day:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/26414997023/

Next day, I said I'll take it easy. Just go for a ride with the 13 y.o.
Same plan, nice and steady. 25 miles and 1700 ft later...
 well, my clavicle is
definitely hurting today. D'oh!
Not too many pics from Sunday, but sure found the best back yard to hang
out
in: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/27039068645/in/photostream/

Have decided I don't care of Albatross bars for long rides. I put them on
to take the weight off my arms/shoulder, but instead they force my
shoulders up too far, and make me feel like I'm hunched up. Lowering the
bars puts too much weight on my hands uncomfortably. Probably back to my
Moustache bar stand by...

So good times this weekend!

The Entmoot/Jamboree two years ago was a fantastic, grass-roots event
that everyone enjoyed and talked about for a while. It seemed like
everything really fell into place (except I had to leave early) for a
fantastic weekend. That enjoyable event got us thinking about something
similar. We talked about it, but nothing came of it.

Fast forward to last December when Hugh, Jim, and myself made a trip
to the West Point Inn , and had a
phenomenal time there celebrating Jacquie Phelan's (and Philip W's!)
birthday. An absolute blast. We can't recreate those moments, but we
want to have another opportunity back at the Inn with any like minded
 folks
to celebrate life, life on a bicycle, the historical context, in one of
 the
most beautiful storied areas I can imagine. So with Jacquie's help we
are hosting a SoCal/NorCal get together in June!

We have reserved the entire facility for those two nights, and want to
pack in as many people as we can. We hope many of you living in the Bay
Area that we don't get to visit can make it! Maybe even some people from
out of the area can make it there as well (Looking at you, PDXers)!

The costs are very reasonable. For the two nights, it is $2,400. If we
can get 30 of us, it will be $80 a person. Throw in another $20-50 for
Saturday night dinner and breakfast, and you're looking at a bit less than
$150 at most for a unique two night experience in a very special (magical
even!) place. I/we hope many of you can come.

For those not able to do the whole stay, we are planning on a Saturday
ramble of a ride, followed by the above-mentioned dinner. Thinking
the Pine Mountain Loop, Repack to Fairfax to the Marin Museum of Bicycling
back to the Inn. Plenty of alternative routes if someone doesn't want to
 do
that. Just kind of a cool way to really take advantage of what the area
 has
to offer. So for sure, plan on being there for the ride and dinner!
We'll figure out a cost per person for just the dinner, it won't be much.
Won't even worry about it if it's just a few people, but hoping to get a
 decent sized group there.

Dinner Friday night is potluck. Sat a.m. breakfast leftovers and
communal pancakes or similar. Sat lunch on your own. Sat dinner
provided. Sun breakfast leftovers/communal. Pretty low key. We're hoping
 to
have some beer provided, but everyone bring a six pack or bottle of your
favorite is a way to do it as well.

Sleeping arrangements are somewhere in the range of hostel level. Four
 to five beds per room.

[RBW] Re: Strada Rossa March 19th... you all are invited!

2016-02-05 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Finalizing some trails this weekend, but if it goes according to plan, the
English century is going to be on the epic side. Approaching Leadville
elevation numbers:

   - English Century: 104 miles (60 dirt) with 12,100'
   - Metric Century: 64 miles (32 dirt) with 6700'
   - M 1/2 Century: 36 miles (20 dirt) with 3600

The metric century and half-metric are pretty much in the can course-wise.
Going to be more dirt on it this year than previous, especially in the
English century (~60%). The half-metric will be a really nice course, with
great sampling of terrains. That's the main course the ride was built
around. All three will hit what I feel is the golden ratio of elevation
gain: 1,000 ft for every 10 miles.

If you're on the fence and doubting your ability, the half-metric will be
very doable if ridden at your own pace. Metric will be tough, but still
doable. English century... well, good luck with that one :)

Food and post-ride refractory period will be top notch as well. Feel free
to just come out for that! We're going to be moving up to the next level
for the food, two kegs of local brew, hopefully some locally made softdrink
as well. Obviously motels in town, but we'll find a couch or floor
somewhere if that's how you roll. No excuses to not come out and enjoy the
day in some form! We're over 130 registered for the 250 spots. It probably
won't hit the cut off, but if you're planning on it, better get a move on
that registration thing:
http://iebikingalliance.org/content.aspx?page_id=87_id=961736_id=483217

And most importantly: Storms have pretty much cleared all the route of
goatheads!!! The talisman works!

Yeah, only part that seems a bit vague. I try to find out head tube length
from sellers, as that's a less subjective measurement than seat tube
height. So then if the head tube is 145mm or whatever I can look on geo
charts and determine the frame size from that. Presuming the HT measurement
is posted of course.

[RBW] Re: Do you ever find yourself tempted by brifters?

2015-12-10 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
I like them a lot. I didn't go out of my way to get some, but they came on
a used bike I bought. And, they're great! Especially for spirited off-road
riding, when you're in the drops and don't want to let go of your grip to
move your hand. Amazing in that application!

But they do wear out *significantly *faster than bar-ends, and I can see
how they're prone to ride-ending damage in a crash. I almost treat them
like a replaceable wear item like a chain or even tires. They last longer
than those of course, but nowhere near what bar ends (decade) or friction
(lifetime) shifters do.

Very intrigued by the Simergo 11 to 9 set set up, and will probably do that
when my current Ultegras wear out (they're starting to shift poorly right
now).

Original price was $1,400, so maybe you're right in that it's overpriced. I

I guess if someone has always wanted one and has the liquidity, it's there

I've wanted to put together a more dirt-oriented version of the Redlands
 Strada Rossa for a while
now. The RSR has about 50% dirt, and it's high quality stuff, but a lot of
asphalt connecting it. Kicked around some ideas and came up with this:
 http://ridewithgps.com/ Only
about five of the 38 miles are asphalt, which anyone in marketing can
explain to you is the same as 100% dirt!

It includes all kinds of surfaces. Santa Ana River crossing on dry
beach sand. Sandy roads. Rocky flat-ish singletrack. Buffed singletrack
climbing. Fire road descents. Suburban sprawl roads. LOTS of goatheads.
Weather should be beautiful. Rain the last couple days packed down the
 sandy portions a bit.

Rolling at 9:00 on Saturday the 14th, leaving from in front of Augie's
Coffee in downtown. Finishes at Gourmet
 Pizza Shoppe
  also
downtown. Bring a U-lock and leave it downtown for when you get back as
start/finish are right by each other.

Serious about the goatheads. If you don't have Slime, tubeless, liners
or all three, you will be walking home.

Unlike the RSR, this is not an organized ride. Just some locals and
internet friends getting together to explore out in the hills. We're slow,
we meander, we like carbs. Feel free to jump aboard!

2015-11-12 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
Goatheads are the worst if you have regular tires. But if taking
precautions not that big of a deal.

But yes, why organize a ride if food and beverage aren't your first
priority???

I hope this will be a great ride. It mixes all kinds of dirt terrain
together. That's really what all my riding has been lately. So I tried to
put it all together in one grand loop. 40 miles of dirt isn't the longest
ride in the world, but it's definitely tougher than most our rides. Trying
to make it worth the drive out here!!!

Feel confident ordering directly from Germany. I've bought from Bike24

Returns are probably a non-starter, but you could probably re-sell with
minimal depreciation.

What Steve said.

A 29x3" tire. Not quite a fat bike (>4") but larger than your everyday 29er
hovering around 2.25".

A 27.5+ wheel (3") seems like the "it" size of the moment, especially as
you can retrofit them into a 29er frame that can fit a 29X2.4" tire.

But as I mentioned above... mass. I like my wheels light! That's my one
problem with 29ers, and why I'm toying with going to a 27.5 MTB (non plus).

2015-10-09 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
I don't know... my regular 29ers are way heavy with a lot of inertia...
there's a lot of mass there. 29+ just seems like I'd be moving a lot more
rubber and metal around. 27.5+ seems a lot more reasonable to work with.
Especially with a diameter/circumference similar to a regular 29er
wheel/tire. Haven't been on either, so happy to be proven wrong.

[RBW] Re: Tire Review: WTB Nano 40

2015-10-09 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
I agree with everything Mike wrote! In fact, I bought based partially on
his experiences with those as well as the
MSOs http://www.blackmtncycles.com/2012/06/tale-of-two-tires-part-2.html

I'd say the two are comparable, with the Nanos being a bit better in
dirt/looser stuff, the MSOs a bit better on road/hardpack. I have both
mounted on different bikes, and have no real inclination to pull them off
for road rides!

Follow up: I did go over the Nanos last night picking out the thorns that
broke off, and both tires flatted. But like I mentioned, it wasn't a
problem in the field, which is where it counts!!!

[RBW] Tire Review: WTB Nano 40

2015-10-08 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
I've had these on my Salsa for most of the summer up to now, and they have
been riding great. They're a touch slower on the road than my favorite
all-rounder tire, the Clement X'Plor MSO . But a lot more grab in the dirt,
including singletrack. What really impressed me yesterday and inspired this
posting was riding through a lot of goathead thorns. Almost all of the
thorns were embedded in the raised tread portions and didn't puncture the
tube. I was able to pull them all out. The few that were in the regular
surface I was able to break off without releasing the pressure. Rode home
without catastrophe!!! Still have to face the consequences this afternoon,
but not having to change a tube mid-ride makes all the difference!

[RBW] Re: Schwalbe big apples 29x2.35 on 58cm Atlantis? And other fatties

They're light, flexible, offer decent cornering grip in the dirt, and ride
well on asphalt. They best thing I can say is that I don't notice they're
there on pavement. Can't say that about many 2" knobbies!

[RBW] Re: Albastashes on a Cheviot; advice sought!

2015-09-29 Thread cyclotour...@gmail.com
L, sounds like you've worked through this already, but as others have
mentioned, the Alba*tross* is lower and more forward than the Boscos.
Direct swap of mountain-style levers as well. I've swapped between the two
on the same stem, and for me, the Boscos are too close, whilst the Albas
are too low. Wish I could get the height of one and the reach of the other,
but not to be found in nature.

So there you go, more muddle for you!

Schwalbe seems to be the way to go! I had some on a bike I sold, and no
problems. Of course the Q-tubes are problem free on the other rims as
well... :-)

Third flat in two years from valve stem ripping out of the tube on my
front Velocity Synergy rim. First two were catastrophic during rides,
almost dumping me. The third time was this morning when I went out to the
 garage.

Rim tape seems fine. No burrs on valve stem hole. I put an extra layer
of Velox tape over to reinforce the area. Cut out a small 1X1cm of tube
 and
slipped over the valve stem to reinforce that. I don't over-tighten the
valve lock-nut and am leaving it off after this morning repair.

Running out of options here! Any suggestion? If not, is this possibly a
warranty issue for defective rim? I'd hate to send it back and have
Velocity write about me on their blog.

I don't know about Bonty, but Novara tubes are made in China vs. Taiwan for
Q or Indonesia for Schwalbe.
