[RBW] Dumbell Spanner

2012-10-16 Thread dweendaddy
I lost one of my favorite tools the other day - the 10 in 1 dumbell spanner
brought from Rivendell. I was googling around and found it at:
http://www.vueltausa.com/vuelta-daily-specials/dumbell-spanner.html
$1 a piece.
I bought 5 so I can give away a few!

I like the NEOS over shoes (boots).

I wore them all winter long in southern New England and now barely wear them in
Nashville. The great bonus for commuting is that you can just take them off and
have normal shoes underneath!

Devil's gear was getting more Riv ish when I lived there a few years ago,
embracing Civias, Brooks saddles and other things. They are getting more
into cargo bikes, too, and helped us get our Joe Bike boxbike delivered.
They are the LBS for our friends at full

Matt, the owner, is a former racer, but what bike shop owner (Riv included)

They are a bit more punky/critical mass oriented than Riv is, but they are

Grant Peterson will discuss and sign Just Ride: A Radically Practical
 Guide to Riding Your Bike

In the same way that Michael Pollan’s slim bestseller Food Rules brought
a gust of common sense to the everyday activity of eating, Just Ride is a
revelation. Forget the ultralight, uncomfortable bikes, flashy jerseys,
clunky shoes that clip onto tiny pedals, the grinding out of endless miles.
Instead, ride like you did when you were a kid—just get on your bike and
discover the pure joy of riding it.
A reformed racer who’s commuted by bike every day since 1980, whose
writings and opinions appear in major bicycling and outdoor magazines, and
whose company, Rivendell Bicycle Works, makes bikes for riders ready to opt
out of a culture overrun by racing, Grant Petersen shares a lifetime of
unexpected facts, controversial opinions, expert techniques, and his own
maverick philosophy. In 87 short, two-to-three page chapters, it covers:

 • Riding: Count Days, Not Miles; Corner Like Jackie Robinson; Steer with
Your Hips, Shift with Your Legs

 • Suiting Up: The Shoes Ruse; Ponchos—the Ultimate Unracer’s Garment

 • Safety: #1 Rule—Be Seen; Helmets Aren’t All They’re Cracked Up to Be

 • Health and Fitness: Why Riding Is Lousy All-Around Exercise; Saddles
Don’t Cause Impotence; Drink When You’re Thirsty—Not Before

Also includes chapters on Accessories, Upkeep, and Technicalities as well
as a final chapter titled “Velosophy” that includes the essential,
memorable thought: Your Bike Is a Toy—Have Fun with It.

Also, just as an FYI type of thing, it *really* helps the author if you
enjoy something that you read if you leave a positive review on amazon.
The more of those that a book gets, the more likely someone from outside
the regular sphere will buy it.

So, if you get the book, and love it, maybe take the extra step of going
to amazon and leaving a review. I am certain that it would help.

If you aren't compelled to leave a review, that's cool too, but i just
wanted to make a little mention of it, as I am certain it is not the type
of thing that Grant or anyone at Riv would ever bring up, but I bet would
help out. also not the type of thing that usually occurs to me to do.

[RBW] Big Guy Saddle Question

2011-05-30 Thread dweendaddy
I have a VO Model 8, sprung and similar in dimensions to the B67. I
have it on my cargo bike and ride upright. I am 210 pounds and I think
I am a bit big for it. I don't know if it is my size, but the two
rivets on the side of the nose failed.
I have a few questions:
1. Is the B67 leather thicker or more substantial? I think it is 5mm
wider - would that make a difference?
2. Did my weight cause the rivets to fail?
3. Do I need to step up to one of the heavy duty (and heavy cost)
Brooks models like the B33? How would I attach such a thing to a
typical single rail seat post?
4. Do I need to replace those rivets? If so, how?

Thanks in advance for the advice.

[RBW] Re: Decision Potential

2011-05-24 Thread dweendaddy
I am around the same size as you and have been looking longingly at
Hunqas. According to the Riv site:
5-9 to 5-11: 54cm
Long-legged 5-10 to 6-1: 58cm
Long legged 6ft to 6-4.4: 62cm

Just wondering - why are you thinking 62 vs 58? If you want it do be
maximally different than the Sam, you might want to put big tires on
it and then, according to the site:
62cm Hunqa: 91.5-100cm PBH (Saddle hight 82-90cm, standover on biggest
tire is 91.5cm)

Now I like big bikes, but having a standover taller than my PBH is
stretching it, so to speak!

My only beef is that the gray is a bit drab for my tastes.
