I have to partially dissent from my esteemed colleague Anton, having

porteurs).

For anything more than a small handlebar rack (e.g., a large porteur

attached up high. This is why you don't see a lot of large porteur racks
 attached to mid-fork braze-ons.

between the companies as interesting as the differences. Looking at the
bike industry as an outsider, I'm guessing that there will always some
subliminal cross-pollenation of ideas even between the true innovators, but
I also think it's possible for different people/companies to come to
similar conclusions in different ways.I personally found and fell in
love with Rivendell because they shared convictions that I already had,
about the folly of letting racing drive fashion, and of advancing
technology strictly for marketing sake. (And I'd never quit wearing
wool, either.) I'm not convinced Surly isn't just coming from the same
place. The irony, as we all know of course, is that BOTH companies
actually end up influencing design trends more than all others combined

same category?) But here's the thing: Speaking as a mountain biker

smart bikes that are accessible to more people, has done *more* to
improve the sport than anyone in 30 years - including Rivendell.

 Hey all.

My normal google fu is not turning up answers for this, nor has a call to

 This is my problem:

I replaced my Sugino XD2 stock chainrings with the Rivvy Rings. I didn't
think that I needed the spacers as I had new rings (boy howdy was I wrong,
lesson learned). So now the space between the middle and the small
chainring is bigger than the space between the Large and the middle, which
causes the chain to hang in between the two rings. I purchased .6mm
spacers, which moved the middle chainring over just far enough so that the
problem becomes the same, just between the Large and the middle chainrings
(i.e. the .6mm spacer is too thick).

So, does anyone have any idea where to get more of these? Or what size
they are? I have one in my hardware box, pic is attached so you know what
 I am talking about.

Also, if you have a Sugino crankset, keep these, they are important lol.

and 2.1 knobbies to use for this purpose but ended up loaning the bike out
to a buddies son who needed it for a Boy Scout ride over the same weekend.

So anyway, I decided to try and make the Saluki into an off-road axe/saw
hauling utility vehicle to access some family property in Winchester VA.
I'm hoping to spend alot more time up there in the next couple years and
think a dedicated off road bike (dare I say fat bike?!?) is in my future.
Bottom line was I didn't bring the 4wd vehicle so I was either riding or
hiking in. I particularly wanted to finally demo the sweet Hultsfor Bruk
American Felling Axe I picked up off the list a month or so ago but hadn't
gotten any use out of it and my 36 bow saw.

Yes that's surly junk straps and old toe clip straps holding the axe and
bow saw on. I'm not endorsing or suggesting anyone else try this! I will
be doing some more garage work to figure out a better, safer and more
secure way to mount these things for the next iteration (and probably on a
knobbier tired bike w/out fenders). It did, however, get the job done. My
'ride' out to the site I was working on is less than 1.5 miles and there
was so much mud early and then hill after that I hike-a-biked most of it.
The way back was easier to ride... I'm amazed how difficult I find
starting up off-road hills from a dead stop. It is very disconcerting to
have so much trouble getting the bike moving!

do its job exceptionally well. I much preferred it for the big tasks than
using my Fiskars X15 chopper. These two trees were standing dead pines
that are adjacent to a semi-permanent campsite I'm putting in. I limbed
both and stripped the bark and I'm hoping to go back and process them
further to use in some construction projects!

On the way out I walked the bike, rolling it on the edges of this
morass... what a mess. On the way back I carried the bike as best I could
which worked better. The mud was so thick and has alot of clay so it
 really sticks good.

 https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-l8Kl0K5wlpQ/U6j9XzVEAPI/EeA/fFjwDJTPbjM/s1600/DSC_3940.jpg

The mud eventually jammed up the fenders and brakes as you can see a bit

New to the group. Have a Hunq on order. I've seen a number of threads
dancing around this topic (including the recent 'Hunqapillar as a true

many mountain bikes do you own, what are they, and when do you decide to
 take which bike out?

I just got into mountain biking/trail riding after years of road riding
(Bay Area, mostly fire roads for now, some single track). I suck at it.
Trying to get better. Salsa El Mariachi with front suspension.
My interest is in exploring mostly, not necessarily going fast or racing,
but that being said I haven't met a downhill that hasn't resulted in a
crash or three (including the demo ride in Shell Ridge I took the Hunq on).
When I ordered the Hunq the idea was to use it as an all-rounder (mix of
fire roads, light trails, city riding, commuting) and my Salsa El Mariachi
29er to take on more technical terrain and single track. But after another
couple more harrowing rides, I decided the Salsa wasn't for me and sold it
(I think it was the 29er wheel size that I didn't like, I am short and it
wasn't nimble enough, though maybe it was the general geometry of the
frame). So now, I'm left with the choice of running the Hunq as my only
mountain bike with two sets of wheels (2.1 smart sams on one and 1.75 green
guards on another), or using the Salsa money to buy an additional
singletrack specific bike with front suspension (and using in conjunction
with the Hunq, the ole N+1). Curious to what other people are doing.

For those of ye riding a 55, what are yer vital stats? I'm 5'9, 84cm PBH.
Yes, I know the 55 should fit... but the TT was too long on an older 56 I
tried once and so I'm wondering if the 55 hopefully shrunk a bit. I run
bars at or just below saddle height.

Thanks folks!

[RBW] Re: Surly-Riv-rivalry?

2013-12-11 Thread rcnute
One of my favorite setups as seen in the RR was the Riv'd out Surly
Pugsley...

We here are all fans of Surly and regularly (if not constantly) refer
people to them, when ours are clearly out of range. I've often said, at
least to myself, that a high compliment to any bike, even tho it doesn't
sound like a compliment, is that it's Not Dumb. Surlys are not dumb. That
is huge in an age of manydumbikes. So many bikes, even and especially super
costly ones (not just the cheap ones trying to look like the super costly
ones) are dumb (of course by my standards, I'm not saying they're
objectively stupid)--and Surlys are smart. They're still (good). They fit
decent tires and racks and fenders.
But buying a bike isn't like buying a pen or a wallet. It has to fit, has
to have the right parts on it for the riding and the weather and the
 weight.
Surly copy Riv? You know, early on I heard it from a reliable but not
ironclad source that one of the early Surlys copied exactly the geometry of
 a Bstone RB-1...but that's not a RIV, and if I cared about that I wouldn't
publish our geometries. If somebody thinks they're worth copying, please
do! More smarter bikes will be out there in traffic then.
Years ago, the Gios Torino catalog was a crackup in that way. Every frame
from 46 to 64 (those were the size) was listed as having parallel 75-deg
seat and head tube angles. Why publish THAT?
In the '80s or '90s---what's a decade here or there?--the Eddy Merckx
bikes geometries were almost complete, and I think even EVEN had the
front-center measurement. But the head tube angle was listed as
 proprietary. That was funny.

We had an interview with Dave Gray (Surlyguy) in an old RR. I've never had
a bad experience there and have never heard any Riv employee denigrate
Surly, ever---and it's not because they have orders not to, it's because
they like the bikes, as do I !

Surly has done a lot of good out there, continues to, and I can't speak
for Surly people, but I can speak for me, and I'm sure all Rivpeople
agree...and we are fans. The brands diverge at some point, but neither is
 dumb.

[RBW] Re: Repainted and rebuilt low trail Hunqapillar

2013-03-31 Thread rcnute
Rene, your builds are always a treat for me to look at and I'm sure many
others here.

Ryan

On Sunday, March 24, 2013 10:36:16 PM UTC-7, René wrote:

 Hi all,

After spending all weekend in the delicious task of rebuilding my newly
painted Hunqapillar with its low trail fork, I'm happy to report that I'm
mostly done and share the photos that proved I worked hard and loved every
 minute of it.

 Pictures to prove it: http://www.flickr.com/photos/orthie251/

Afterwards, I took the bike on its maiden ride to test everything around
the paths in Stanford University and stopped for a beautiful sunset moment
in the garden outside the Rodin museum.

I did several updates to this build:
 - Went with a 175mm 26/40 Sugino crankset, but will likely replace with a
172.5mm 24/38 I just converted. I've had some hip issues and seem to handle
the 172.5mm better, although the Betty has the 175 and I've been doing fine
with it. Go figure. Maybe the repeated attempts to stay on the Low
Carb/High Fat diet with progressively shorter relapse intervals is
working... The 24 will definitely help me in the climbs, at least until I
lose significant weight, and for the same reason, the 38 may be a bit more
friendly on the flats, especially when riding loaded or on a headwind.

 - Went with the 55cm steel Bosco handlebar instead of the previous 58cm
Bullmoose Bosco. While the Bullmoose is awesome and very stiff, after
riding it for a while before the repaint, it seemed a bit too wide. Riding
the much narrower GB Promenade handlebar on the Betty has made me realize I
prefer narrower handlebars than what I used to ride. While the Promenade
may be too narrow for the Hunqapillar, especially off-road, the 55cm Bosco
seems like a perfect middle ground. I've also noticed than as I've started
riding narrower handlebars, my shoulder and neck pain have also
significantly improved. Even when riding the GB Randonneur bars on the
Atlantis with their more forward position. Another improvement I chose is
to use reverse brake levers in order to get the full smooth sections of the
Bosco bar while improving the hand positions that still allow me access to
the brakes. I currently have a set of Tektro 4.1 reverse levers, but will
try a set of Paul's reverse brake levers as they provide more versatility.
The Tektro reverse brake levers also seem to provide a very flexy braking
experience, so I want to see if the Pauls work better.

 - After much thought, I decided to not mount the Pass Stow rack that I
had before and instead, mount the Nitto Mini + Tubus Nova that I first used
on my Bombadil. I'm still keeping the Pass Stow rack and may install it
again, but I didn't like the Porteur bags so much and will try using front
 panniers instead.

 - Decided to try a pair of 50mm Schwalbe Big Ben tires, and I have to say
I'm quite impressed. They roll very nicely, and on the dirt and rough
pavement provide a definite cushy ride. Did I say I'm quite impressed?

 - Still pending is the taping of the handlebars. I'd like to experiment
with the full leather sewn-on bar cover that Velo Orange sells, but may
also end up using Brooks leather tape or the super cushy Cinnelli gel-cork
tape I'm using on the Atlantis. I really like it. I'll probably end up
taping the handle bars next weekend, once I'm sure everything on the
cockpit is the way I want it.

Happy riding and planning an S240 soon, since I couldn't make it the last
 one organized through this list.

 René

[RBW] Re: Shimano bar-end shifters Albatross bars for commuting

2013-03-27 Thread rcnute
The combination works great.

The plastic outer covers can crack but the shifters will continue to work
just fine.

Ryan

On Wednesday, March 27, 2013 3:41:46 PM UTC-7, WETH wrote:

Background (may be skipped as it may not be fully relevant to answering
the question and is quite wordy):
I purchased albatross bars for a bike my son and I are repainting and
building up for him. While waiting for him to select a frame color, I
mounted the albatross bars on my daily commuter (a Surly LHT with riv
purchased racks and Rivendell sackville bags). I was running trekking bars
with grip shifters, which I liked well-enough for my 16 mile round trip
commute, but I found them less comfortable on longer rides. I really like
the albatross bars and am considering making them permanent. (I will have
to purchase a 2nd pair from Rivendell for my son's bike!) However, my most
aggressive riding occurs while I am commuting; it is an urban commute on
roads with buses, aggressive commuters and clueless pedestrians. I shift
gears excessively on the 7 speed cassette using the gripshifters. I often
am quickly index shifting through 6-7 gears as I rapidly approach a
stoplight. (I stop at all red lights.) I like to start up from the easiest
gear and up/down shift through the gears as needed. Often, I am quickly
shifting to keep pace with the traffic. Given the heavy vehicle traffic, I
like to maintain as consistent/predictable a presence as possible, which
usually requires both hands on the handlebars. I am considering replacing
the gripshifts on the albatross bars with Shimano bar-end shifters sold by
Rivendell. The grip shifters feel and look a bit strange on the Albatross
bars--though they work fine. However, I have never used bar-end shifters,
only thumb (index), grip (index) and downtube (friction). If you are
patiently still reading, here is my question.

Question: For those who use or have used the Shimano bar-end shifters,
especially on Albatross bars, how easy is it to index shift rapidly across
several gears on the rear cassette? Is it as easy as moving the lever up
or down the needed number of clicks? (On my gripshift, index shifting, one
click equals one sprocket change on the cassette.) Are the Shimano bar-end
shifters durable enough to take somewhat rough handling every day? (I
think I have read about a washer cracking easily.) As I mentioned, I ride
hard on my commute. I do not mean to insinuate that the shifters are not
of good quality, it is just that I am quite hard on my gear when commuting.
Hence, the Surly LHT with 26 x 2.35 tires. Specifically I would be using
the shifter set compatible with a 6-7-8 speed cassette.

As always I appreciate and always benefit from the individual and
collective wisdom of this group. I apologize for the wordiness of this
 post.
 Many thanks,
 Erl

 Uses

 1) Everything except carrying heavy loads
 2) Riding fast near and far on smooth or rough roads
 3) Regularly carrying a light front load (= 5 kg) on a small front rack,
 such as the Nitto M12
 4) Occasionally carrying an extra front load in panniers on a removable
 low-rider front rack

 a) Light and high-performance. I weigh about 65 kg.
 b) Can accommodate 650B x 38 mm tires with mudguards. Bonus points for
accommodating 650B x 42 mm tires with mudguards.
 c) Cantilever brakes for good clearance, braking power, and looks
 d) Lugged or fillet brazed for good looks
 e) Frame and fork cost = USD 2000

I'm considering both new and used bikes. In the new bike category, i've
read that the Ebisu All-Purpose, the Box Dog Pelican, and the Boulder
All-Road are excellent matches. By the way, is there a clear winner among
 those three?

 Thanks for your attention.

I'm like you, I think. As I think you know, I've got a Hilsen and a
Rawland. Unlike people who say the difference between high trail and low
trail is night and day, my experience has been a bit more nuanced. In
summary, I'm like Esteban, in that for me they both work.

The low-speed stability trick that I can do on my Rawland that no other
bike I've owned can do: I can ride up a 10% grade no-handed. I'm not
saying that's a critical enhancement, but it is for me an objective
empricism that tells me there is a difference in ultra low speed stability.
Take that for what you want. What I've noticed as well is that now that
the seed was planted in my mind that riding in a straight line up a hill is
possible, I find myself wanting to ride my Hilsen in a straight line up
hills as well. It forces me to keep my upper body very quiet with a very
light touch on the bars. I get leverage on the pedals with my lean, not
with a death grip on the bars. I think it's made me a better climber, and
it's helped me work on my flexibility.

The other difference is that my Rawland does shimmy coasting no handed at
above 16mph or so and the Hilsen does not. Maybe I'll get a needle bearing
headset to try and get after that a little. My Hilsen is totally
shimmy-free. For long brevets if my neck and shoulders are getting tired,
being able to sit up on the Hilsen is really nice. Neither the Hilsen nor
the Rawland has ever had a rear rack on it, so whether there's a shimmy
difference with a rear load, I wouldn't know.

They are both splendid bikes, and choosing one for a ride is like choosing
between a Les Paul and a Gibson (and no, I don't know how to play guitar).

the back. I'm not sure if this is a design flaw or an operator error. For
what it's worth, these little issues are not heinous enough to deter me

Incidentally, I am currently running the proper reach caliper up front

and ride characteristics. I currently have it set up as a townie with
fenders, 32mm tires, drop bars, and a basket (*contemplating a dirt
drop stem and flat bars with cork grips*). I also have a San Marcos set
up as a commuter, club ride bike, and cyclocross bike. My San Marcos has a
mix of Shimano parts, 32mm tires, a Velo Orange rack, and drop bars. *To
answer your original question, the San Marcos is an excellent choice for a
 go fast bike.*

 *San Marcos Criticism #1*

I'm not sure if this is true for different sizes, but you'll need
standard reach brake calipers up front and long reach calipers in the rear
if you purchase a 54cm San Marcos. I am not sure if this is true of the
other sizes or with any other 54cm San Marcos frames. I am running Tektro
R559 brakes on this bike--the fit of the rear calipers is spot on however
long reach calipers up front don't seem to fit properly. Have a look at the
attached photo and you'll see that the fork was not designed for long reach
brakes. Conjecture says that this bike should use standard reach brakes and
that the rear brake bridge on my bike was welded too far upwards,
 necessitating longer reach brakes.

 *San Marcos Criticism #2*

The dropouts on this bike suck compared to the ones on my Sam. As you
can see from the photos, the front dropouts originally come with lawyer
tabs--I quickly filed those off after acquiring the bike. The rear dropout
eyelets are welded too closely to the frame and cause interference when
trying to mount a rack or fenders. The welds get in the way and prevent you
from mounting accessories in a flush manner. The second photo shows a
slight gap between the rack tab and the eyelets because the welds get in
the way. Moreover, the decorative part of the Soma dropouts interfere with
the quick-release hub skewer--this is not the case with my Sam.

With all of that said, the San Marcos is an excellent bike and I am very
pleased with it. I have no trouble maintaining an average speed of 23mph
while on club rides. It is quite comfortable however feels very sporty and
agile when compared to the Sam Hillborne. Since you already have a Sam, try
to imagine your bike with easier maneuverability, a lighter feel when
climbing, and less squirrel*liness*. If you go with mainly Nitto parts,
more spokes than less, and wide tires, you'll have no worries about
durability if you end up with a San Marcos.

I haven't had the chance to test ride a Roadeo, but I imagine that model
to be much more suitable for fast riding than the San Marcos. The Roadeo is
a gorgeous frame, and would probably be the ONE frame I would have if I
could only own one bike. But since I'm fortunate enough to

[RBW] Re: Signal police

If people can't figure out what you're doing when extending your right arm
straight out to the right (like I do) we have much bigger problems as a
society.

It was nice of you to be nice to him.

the left arm only, but in WA state, either way is legal, and it feels more
obvious that I'm going to turn right if I put out my right arm and point
that way in the same way I signal a left turn intention.

I pointed out that both were legal, and thanked him for his opinion. He
sort of backtracked and apologetically said he often uses his right arm,
too, but he noticed that it may be harder to see a right arm signal from
 behind. Hmmm - sounds suspicious.

This also begs the question of what side to mount a headlight and
taillight on your bike, if not in the center line...

Revised Code of Washington State 46.61.758
 Hand Signals.

All hand signals required of persons operating
bicycles shall be given in the following manner:

 (1) Left turn.
 Left hand and arm extended horizontally beyond the side of the bicycle;

 (2) Right turn.
Left hand and arm extended upward beyond the side of the bicycle, or
 right hand and arm extended horizontally to the right side of the bicycle;

 (3) Stop or decrease speed.
Left hand and arm extended downward beyond the side of the bicycle.
The hand signals required by this section shall be given before initiation
 of a turn.

[RBW] FS: Silver DT shifters $25 shipped

2012-11-15 Thread rcnute
Anyone want these? They're just sitting around at my place and I don't
have a need for them. They are covered with blue cloth tape. Best I
remember they work fine. No cables/housing.

Kinda busy so no time for photos. If they're not what you thought you can
always send 'em back.

Thanks!

I also house a 1991 MB-1, which may possibly morph into a 1994 in the near
