Re: [RBW] Re: Cherry Blossoms Season!

2020-04-15 Thread tuolumnebikes
Mariposa and Tuolumne Counties requested NPS to shut down the park. Per
NPS news release: As of 3:00 pm today, Friday, March 20, 2020,
*Yosemite* National Park is *closed* to all park visitors until further
notice. This *closure* will be enforced 24-hours a day/7-days a week and
there will be no access permitted to *Yosemite* National Park.

So even the high country is closed. The concern is that the two counties
have so little health care capacity to deal with people attracted to
recreation. The Forest Service has also closed their roads to the
primary recreation areas. It's looking like the bikes only days when
Glacier Point Road and Tioga Pass open probably won't happen.

Carl,

Those are very nice, thanks. I am presuming that you are near Yosemite
National Park. I know that the park is closed, similar to many parks
around the state. However, many state and county parks near me in the
Bay Area are still open to non-motorized access by people on bikes and
on foot. Do you know if that is the same situation for Yosemite?

Thanks,
Franklyn

The Mariposa lilies are starting now. They're very simple--one
leaf, one flower growing on exposed hillsides. They are the kind
of flower that you have to watch for. The dogwood flowers are
coming soon.

My basic 13 mile out the door loop ascends a big hill (Big Hill),
wraps around the north side of the ridge on gravel and descends on
the south face on pavement. The north side has lush drainages with
dogwoods and big leaf maple--all just starting to leaf out. The
light is awesome now while the trees are still letting the sun
through.

Jason,
You have gorgeous trees near you. Must be fun to ride around
in town in this season.
I can imagine drivers complaining about fallen blossoms
sticking all over their cars!

Franklyn,
I can't tell if they're cherries either, but it must be a joy
to admire them while riding. Beautiful.

Tirebiter, Steven, and Roberta,
Glad to know that you are enjoying this thread.
Cherry blossoms are already falling here, but then peach
blossoms are in full bloom.
I think I can take pictures of them next weekend.

Re: [RBW] Re: 30 Days of Biking!

2020-04-09 Thread tuolumnebikes
Next time I'm up there I'll get out a compass and do a quick feasibility
study. It's right off the road. There's such a cool variety of surfaces
in there, but not likely to displace Yosemite firefall as a
photographers destination.

Carl, thanks for the John Prine reference.  He was such a talented

I love the idea of tree henge...will you keep checking that and let us
know if/when it happens?

Ya' know that old trees just grow stronger
And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day
Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello"

Re: [RBW] Wald Bag

2020-04-09 Thread tuolumnebikes
Looked up Wald--nothing, Jandd has a Jandd-jp account with 428
followers. Swift has 57.2K followers, and there's no need to follow them
since their message is multiplied by influencers and happy customers.
Clearly it's up to the companies to do their marketing consistent with
their price points, and kudos to Swift for their products and marketing.

My point is that while developing markets for high end stuff is good for
the diversity of the marketplace, it has the unfortunate downside of
training people to think that perfectly good or maybe even excellent
ordinary stuff is not quite good enough which raises the bar for people
of modest means or those traditionally less represented among bike
riders to join the party. I don't mean to discount the LBSs, coops, and
coalitions doing great work to get and keep people riding and smiling at
modest cost. Any support for Taiwanese Fender Day?

White for the pancakes, varies for the bread. I don't mind the bread
being denser with whole wheat, but she really wants the voids to come
out right.

Mark - also let’s add #clemantics. I love #clemocracy and #imacleminist as
well. This is too funny. Hurry up and build your Clem so you can post photos to
Instagram and join in with the hashtags. Slim Wonder uses #thatclemlife, also
good. Hashtags are great for business - we are gonna grow Rivendell, one Clem
at a time. Yesterday on Insta, Utility Bicycle Works posted a photo of what I
think is a 2019 green Clem. They had this to say about it (and I’m parsing it
for the sake of brevity): “We installed new pads, cables/housing, rear rack,
and made slew of adjustments before blowing the bicycle 67 kisses and sending
it home...Clems ride soft and nimble, like a jet-ski in a pool of Cool Whip.”
I’ve begun to think of Clems as the bread and butter of Rivendell - which may
or may not be true. They hit such a sweet spot in the market - nothing has been
sacrificed in the way of comfort and practicality, they are still beautiful,
and they are less expensive than the fully-lugged models. My husband would have
never bought that 2015 Clem had it been the price of a Sam. My son certainly
wouldn’t be riding a little Rivendell for the same reason. But because the
Clems exist and at such a friendly price, we are practically collecting them. 

Carl - I make sourdough pancakes, too! My recipe is similar to your wife’s, but
I’m going to try hers just to see. Does she use whole wheat or white flour?

Got a FaceTime call from E last night - he had a couple intelligent questions
as he was working with his starter. I think his first loaf will be baked today.
Man, if that kid gets good at sourdough his mother is going to have to ration
him. He’s totally nuts about this bread!
