Great news on bike and baby. Very nice looking build on that bike.

Congrats on both the baby and the Ram. I had one of the vintage and it is a
great ride.

[RBW] (Belated) New (to me) Bike Day: Rambouillet!

2018-08-06 Thread Jeremy Till
I'd recently been finding myself pining after the aesthetic of many
mid-2000's Rivendells, looking longingly at pictures the Quickbeam I used
to have but sold to another list member (hey, Wally!), when a 64cm
Rambouillet popped up on a nearby craigslist. It seemed like just the
thing, with the usual spot-on Rivendell build and some really nice
finishing touches: Dura-Ace hubs, hammered Honjos, Gilles Berthoud bag,
titanium B.17. I decided to move on a few other projects and spring for
this one. Connecting with the buyer and seeing the bike was one of those
"it's meant to be" moments: he literally lived across the street from my
sister-in-law's apartment, and when I hopped on to test ride, the saddle
was already in the perfect position for me--no adjustments needed.

And that's kind of the point with this bike. I usually like having
projects, building or re-building my bikes so they're a reflection of me.
But I have a baby on the way any minute now, and probably will have less
time and attention for projects moving forward. The Rambouillet is done up
so nicely I don't feel the need to change anything on it just yet. I
bought it thinking I'd put drop bars on it, but the Albatross build is
reminding me of when I had my Quickbeam and Long Haul Trucker set up
similarly and I'm really enjoying it, at least on the short rides I've done
so far. The handling is great with a few pounds in the Berthoud bag.

Being red-green colorblind, I'm usually not one to really notice paint
jobs, but this one is really nice! There is something about the
Rambouillets' paint, maybe it's the pearl coat that they used, that gives
it a real depth. Ironically, the red-green colorblind guy has ended up
with two green Rivendells (my Clem is also green), but I'm really happy
about it. Looking forward to many great miles on it!
