[RBW] ?Appaloosa versus Sam Hillborne
Ride difference between my Sam and my Appaloosa (prototype) seems to be in the 40mm vs 50mm tires on them at max clearance. 50 lets me run lower pressure and rides softer. The longer stays don't make much difference to me. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] ?Appaloosa versus Sam Hillborne
The Appaloosa is specifically marketed as a touring/light-trail bike, so you may want to lean that way for camping. I own one and haven't ridden a Sam, so I can't do that comparison for you. All I can say is I ride pavement only with light loads, and I couldn't ask for a nicer road bike. I'm 54 and kind of a cruiser, so I can't speak for true roadies who like to hammer, but I think it would match your pace well. It's very stable with a slight "spring" in its gate, like it wants to keep going, yet feels very maneuverable without being twitchy. I'm an HUGE fan of this Riv, and I've owned a bunch of them. Grant really nailed it this time. Joe Bernard Vallejo, CA. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "RBW Owners Bunch" group. [RBW] ?Appaloosa versus Sam Hillborne
Guys, I have a good problem to have. I'm in the process of deciding between an Appaloosa and a Sam Hillborne. I'd very much appreciate your input; particularly from folks who are familiar with both of these bikes. 90%+ of my riding is on pavement. The rest is light trail riding over occasionally bumpy terrain. I am planning on some longer touring, specifically doing the Great Allegheny Passage and C Canal this Spring. I will likely do this with a mix of camping and B stays. I am an older guy (pushing seventy). Comfort is definitely a consideration. In reading previous posts I have noted that some feel what they describe as a sense of ease on the Appaloosa. That sounds appealing. For those who share that perception could you characterize that more fully? I also understand that the Sam is a more "spritely" ride. For those who have ridden both bikes how would you describe what distinguishes the two? Are these differences relatively subtle or easily noticeable? I hope that the above makes sense. I am more than happy to provide additional info. Unfortunately at present there are no Rivendell dealers in my region nor have I yet to see a Riv in the wild in my neck of the woods.
