Re: [RBW] Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH
Excellent feedback guys! Thank you very much. Jeffrey the pictures are particularly helpful and Steve as always your experience with this exact frame is great to hear. I haven't gotten up close with Honjo's but I was kind of blown away by Berthouds on several of Rob Perks bikes earlier this year (as blown away as one can be by fenders that is... ). The stiffness and solid installs really stood out. $74 vice $150 doesn't hurt either. In thinking I may try out the Berthouds and if I really am not comfortable with the clearance for 42's I could go to 38's or swap them to another frame. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. The second gen of those fenders are quite nice quality, too, with good hardware. Re: [RBW] Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH
I have VO Zepps on two bikes with 42mm Hetres, and they really are just about the ideal fender for that tire. Plenty of clearance, but they don't look fat and oversized, either. No issues on either setup, both of which have seen very rough, rocky and fast gravel riding. At half the price of Honjos, they are a bargain. [RBW] Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH
After riding a bike with these stainless beauties and given that I have some time to 're-imagine' my Saluki I've got two fender questions for the group; 1. Anyone mounted the 50mm Berthoud fenders (650b) on a saluki/ahh using 42mm tires, any issues with clearance at the stays or unacceptable clearance for the tire, or other install notes/thoughts? 2. Anyone had their Berthoud fenders powdercoated/painted? If so did you coat the fender stays as well. Thoughts or opinions on coated/painted to match fenders vs shiny metal finish? Thanks! I used to have Berthoud fenders on that very Saluki when I first got it, with Col de la Vie 38mm tires. When I switched to Hetres I switched to wide Honjos. I don't think Berthouds are wide enough for a 42mm tire. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. Re: [RBW] Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH
As you know I hung on to the Honjos when we swapped Salukis. They've acquired more beausage while in my care since I got them from Steve. In spite of my inability to install them with JPW-perfect fender lines they have great fit and function hovering over the red Hetres on the AgapanthuSaluki. If I were fender shopping for replacements I'd buy the very same ones. Tony If you have Steve's Saluki, then you have cantilevers. That will give you some extra headroom. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups RBW Owners Bunch group. They're the Compass fluted Honjos, 58mm wide. http://www.compasscycle.com/fenders_650_fluted.html $149 I did have to make some surgical alteration to the end of the fender to get it to fit at the chainstays, which is documented on my flickr site. It's possible a more skilled workman than me could have devised a way to get them to fit without cutting, and it's certain that said skilled workman could have done a much more elegant job if cutting was inevitable. At least, you know in advance /something/ has to be done; I didn't find that out until well into the installation, and it was a real Holy $%^! Re: [RBW] Berthoud Fenders on Saluki/AHH
When I had my Saluki, an early cantilever one, I used Berthoud 60mm stainless fenders. The 50mm model did not offer enough clearance on the sides of the Hetres for my tastes. Perhaps a bike with more vertical clearance can work with the 50mm fenders easier. Others have used them but I much prefer a flatter, wider fender profile. The fenders are often sold as 26x60mm. They work over 42-45mm 650b fenders with no hassle. Keep in mind that you will need to trim the fork crown daruma to clear the tire.
