Ah, good catch, Keith. Is this some kinda Rosco experiment with CLEM bendy
stays and decals? Hmm...

Question: your photo is cut off and just barely shows it (perhaps by design?),
but what's up with the seat cluster? Looks like the one lug that the clem had
is going away? Did they burn through all of the unused tall bike lugs that
prompted the project in the first place? Or is the design changing? Or is
this a one-off experiment? I thought Grant said recently that they weren't
likely to do any more clear coat bikes, either. Interestig and attractive,
though.

I better not go look at it. I just sold an Appaloosa to cover a tax bill (and
because I wasn't riding it much)..the last thing I need is to discover that
this CLEM is my size and the only one like it and BUY IT RIGHT NOW TODAY! Is it
a 52cm? Don't answer that!

[RBW] Clem in the raw

2017-06-04 Thread Surlyprof
I assumed so. As much as I was drooling over the 650b Hunq... I was only in
the market (and budget) for a couple of rolls of Newbaum's.

Having bought other tig'ed bikes in the past, you could often tell that the
paint or powdercoat was masking less than even good welding. I even bought a
painted Brompton over the raw laquer one because the raw one was so
unapologetic about the mediocre welds. In that world, this Clem stood proudly
in the front of the showroom. It was a lot shinier than most clear coated
bikes I've seen in the past. I wonder if they polished it before spraying. If
you want to see it, better get there soon. I can't imagine it hanging around
long.

That's pretty sweet. It looks parked in the showroom, not outside like an
owner's bike would be. Are they selling it?

Re: [RBW] Clem in the raw

2017-06-04 Thread Patrick Moore
I recall seeing long, long ago (nearly 25 years ago) a custom, 650C ("See")
titanium road bike owned by a local woman roadie, a Spectrum, I think. The
tigs were so lovely smooth that I asked her if the frame was fillet brazed.
A lot of filing, she said, in effect.

But for untouched beads, those are the nicest I've seen, and I agree the
frame looks beautiful.

I'm glad Grant apostatized on his pledge never to join tubes with anything
except lugs. (Long ago, in a Reader.) I hope he'll eventually become more
liberal toward disc brakes, too -- someone suggested an option, with
removable canti bosses; I think that makes very good sense. The real
virtues of a Rivendell frame, IMO, are far less the aesthetics, though this
counts, than the "feel", fit, and handling, which at their best (just
referring to my own experience of them and my taste) are unsurpassed.
