Re: [RBW] Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2017-01-02 Thread Joe Broach
Classic Blackburn-style low riders have done well on my Romulus for several
tours. I just used p clamps. It will discolor the paint over time. Fork and
tubing are functionally equivalent to your 'bou. Go for it!

Have any Ram owners ever:

   - somehow run low-rider panniers on the stock fork?
   - run low-rider panniers and an additional front bag on the stock fork?
   - had success with an aftermarket fork with a different trail figure?

Long story, I'm thinking of having a couple mods done to my Ram and new
powder done (the Creamsicle is cool, but doesn't match anything -
especially not all the red clothing I have). I would consider adding
mid-fork eyelets if running front low-riders appears to work well for the
bike.

Thanks!

[RBW] Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-29 Thread Bill Lindsay
I would have no hesitation whatsoever to trying a good lowrider on a
Rambouillet. My personal favorite it the Nitto F27, but many people think that
is too much money to spend on a rack. I think it's a bargain at the going
price.

Re: [RBW] Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-29 Thread Patrick Moore
I never used front low riders on my Ram (one of the later ones, FWIW), but
I did have them built and installed on my 2003 custom, and the bike handles
10 per side very well, and I've carried 20 per side, which made the
steering sluggish.

As Steve said, there's a huge difference between carrying a front load up
high over the wheel, and on low riders.

Ah, but you do not need a "front loader" to use lowriders. They work
fine with all geometries, basically.

The Saluki which is the same bike as the Hilsen today was the one sold
as a medium tourer with front and rear pannier rack mounts, while
Atlantis was the heavy tourer. A slot now possibly shared with
Hunqapillar.

8/5/8 OS (which is what the Rambouillet has) is, if I recall
correctly, about as stiff as 531 Tourist grade, 10/7/10 std
diameter, as was used in the Jack Taylor Tourist, one of the most
capable loaded touring bikes of its age. 73 degree head angle was
not unknown among touring bikes of the time either, I believe.

[RBW] Front Low-rider Panniers on Rambouillet?

2016-12-28 Thread Kieran J
I will add that the most extreme (and yet possibly most logical) option would
be to commission a new low-ish trail fork from Tom Matchak or another builder,
and powder the whole shootin' match.

I'm wanting to reserve that as a last and most sensible/costly resort.
