Re: [RBW] Gentleman Sam Hillborne but more of a story to it and a bit of drama
I have been riding 46cm Noodle Bars on my '99 Heron since I replace the 44cm Noodle Bars I had on it originally. For the style of riding I enjoy (distance mainly), the Noodles have been ideal. Long, flat, comfortable. My hands have never been happier on a handlebar. That having been said, I am not a huge fan of upright bars for distance riding. I find too upright a posture to be nearly as uncomfortable as too bent a posture. After having noodles on my Atlantis since I got it in '03, I've lately been fooling around with upright bars. The current set-up is Origin 8 Space Bar but it lacks enough forward sweep for climbing (not a high priority at the moment, though). I've had hand issues the last couple of years, hence the desire for something different. The eggplant tape looks great. dougP On Sunday, May 4, 2014 10:26:07 PM UTC-7, Tom Virgil wrote: It has been almost a year since Jared at Rivendell and I discussed Sam, elected a build kit, and pulled the trigger. Re: [RBW] Gentleman Sam Hillborne but more of a story to it and a bit of drama
That's a very nicely built up and set up Sam! And I do like that slightly slate-grey blue (if my eyes see it right, and if the screen faithfully reproduces it) -- it's a color I often use for elegant but not gaudy accents in my (not cheap) resumes. On to the bar: I've tried a huge number of different sorts of bars over the years and the end result consistently is that traditional drop bars are the only shape I can comfortably ride for more than a few miles. The heel of my left hand's palm is very sensitive and gets numb very quickly when on any part of any bar except the ramps, hoods, or hooks of a traditional drop -- even the last have to be pretty much horizontal; no downward angle. Interesting: with all this experimenting, I've found pretty much conclusively in my own case that shape and positioning of the bar is far, far, FAR more important than padding, be this tape or gloves. I don't use gloves myself except for cold and prefer unpadded ones.
