Re: [RBW] OT: Is there any effective protection for iPhone 6 glass?

2017-06-13 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks, all. Someone gave my daughter the name of a local Apple tech whom I
met and who impressed me with his knowledge. He replaced the glass ($79)
and sold me for $25 a case and stick-on glass that, he said, was not as
good as the Otterbox Defender, but which works well and which is much
cheaper.

I had told my daughter about the Defender (apparently it's far better than
the second and third tier Otterbox models), but she objected to the bulk.
This new case + glass is far less bulky.

[RBW] OT: Is there any effective protection for iPhone 6 glass?

Get some Gorilla Glass to cover the glass with. It's basically a stick on pane
of glass that goes over the iPhone screen.

Pelican cases also provide good protection. The key is a case with a decent
lip so if you drop the phone the screen doesn't hit the ground.

nice, i've gone through more phones than i care to admit due to water. got
tired of putting my phone in a dry bag in my bike bag, and finally got a
lifeproof case plus warranty.

it's amazing how expensive it was for what seems like rubber, and some
plastic that seems like high-tech saran-wrap.

Re: [RBW] OT: Is there any effective protection for iPhone 6 glass?

2017-06-04 Thread Jeff Lesperance
Otterbox is the defense of choice for wife and daughter's iPhone 6, I think
the specific mode is the defender. That said, I still choose to buy
insurance on daughter's phone as she's only as responsible as her
undeveloped prefrontal corerex allows. I have also successfully replaced an
iPhone 5 screen with a $30 kit from Amazon - it's a delicate operation, but
not impossible. When the cost of a used phone in the model of your choice
approaches the cost of professional screen replacement, it's worth it to
give it a go I say.

[RBW] OT: Is there any effective protection for iPhone 6 glass?

2017-06-04 Thread Patrick Moore
Daughter needs to get glass #3 replaced on her just paid for 6.

Is there a more or less foolproof case or cover to protect the thing when
it is (inevitably) dropped from 3 or 4 feet? Context: take carelessness for
granted; she's just shy of 16.

The Otterbox in some model or other is said to be the best protection, but
reviews are of course ambiguous. Is this the best option, or are there
better ones? Bulk is not a problem! (Since it will prevent her from putting
the thing in the hip pocket of her tight jeans.)

'Nother question: does anyone have any Helpful Hints (Heloise! Yes I'm old)
for iP 6 protection, or information about iP 6 liabilities?

Riv content: I use my iP 5 for Cyclemeter (free version) and I've dropped
it any number of times, including dropping it while riding the bike slowly,
and it has come through unscathed, as did my 4 and 3 before it.

Thanks. Making daughter pay, but she is saving for her choral group's
Dublin trip, and this is the 2nd $100 she will be shelling out.
