Re: [RBW] OT-Cool Lugged bike for 7 year old (has to be girly)
If she can fit a 24 bike, you have a lot more options over 20 bikes. They're quite heavy, but the older Trek 220 kid bikes are pretty cool. Steel frame, rigid fork, decent serviceable components. Typically very low use. Can find on CL pretty easily cheaply: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cyclotourist/4617382399/in/set-72157594443171032That's a girl' model as it's it slightly lowered TT and is painted dark purple. I think Joe Bunik on this list has one hanging in his garage, along with a bunch of other project frames that will probably never get built (just kidding Joe). My daughter studies French and wanted a French bike, so I found a lugged steel Peugeot mixte in purple. Polished it up, replaced the heavy steel 27 wheels with alloy 700's, replaced the junky Simplex with Shimano, added Nitto Dove bars, and voila, a classy purple get-around town bike. Called out by Jim M!?! Zing... ;-) It's funny b/c I saw your message earlier and was thinking about what to write. Before becoming a dad the they outgrow just em too fast factor always sounded cliche, but now I see there is a kind of bittersweet truth to that... My 6.5yo princess rocks a Novara (bumble bee yellow) w pink Newbaums tape, and a rather horrible-wonderful pink Schwinn w full fenders etc, both 16, but she should probably move up to 20 or larger. That's where the tres ancien juvenile (450A/22.5 tire) racer frame which Mather mocks comes into play - 24/520iso wheels should fit it... but even that is a boat anchor. Pretty sure there were some cool mini-UJB Fujis out there. Perhaps time for Riv to take the Rosco Bubbe project off the shelf... =- Joe Bunik gonna git at my projects, mark my words...
