The first big ride for the year is the Fleche - the famous 24-hour non-
stop randonneur team ride around Easter. We have a lovely course
around the Olympic Peninsula, where we reach the Pacific Ocean around
sunrise and then have breakfast at the historic Lake Quinault Lodge.
We finish by approaching Olympia, WA, on beautiful gravel roads. At
the finish, we meet the other randonneurs and share each others'
courses and experiences. A write-up on a past Fleche is here:

A couple of people mentioned the Trace. If you get to it, check out
theCycler's Rest

Franklin, Tn. I stayed there with some friends last year and it is a

woods.

I'm in Charlotte NC. Since riding is such a big part of my life, I found
the bike stuff was half of my entire year's highlight list. I have a Betty

ride everywhere all the time. I'm not athletic and I don't race. I'm the
turtle doing one mile at a time but it adds up. Here's what's going on in
Charlotte NC. If anyone is in town, let me know and we can ride around.
Charlotte is not known as a bike town but I've found I can get around to
most places by bike just fine.

 Dear Bike Friends,

Thanks for riding with me and helping me make this a great year for
bikes. Bike stuff is growing and happening and there’s so much to do and
see. As you can see, there’s all kinds of fun things to do a bike. The
more bikes on the road, the safer it is for bikes, cars and pedestrians.
Resolve to get on your bike and ride this year. Come ride with me on a
 Tuesday Night.

As always, if it’s not raining tomorrow (at 7:30 pm), I’ll be at Common
 Market at 7:45. We’ll ride at 8.

 Ride safe,

 Pam

 *Bike Highlights of 2012*

 Fun rides:

- “Zombieland” Alleycat presented by Spoke Easy
- “Princess Bride” Alleycat presented by Spoke Easy
- Cranksgiving at Independence Park
- NoDa - Freedom Park ride at Dolce Vita
- Urban Assault Ride presented by New Belgium Brewing
- Critical Mass rides every month

 Rides this year:

 · I host a ride every week for the Charlotte Area Bike Alliance
on Tuesday nights at 8. We meet at 7:45 and figure out a route then ride
for about an hour. This ride is meant to be for anybody who just wants to
ride and have a good time. It’s nothing serious and everyone is welcome.
We don’t go far or fast but we all like to ride. There were a total of 84
riders last year (including me). We were rained out 4 times, I had to
cancel 3 times and there were times were no one showed up. But hopefully
it’s a small contribution to help people get comfortable riding on the
roads and share shortcuts and safe roads. Since I started riding at night,
it’s my favorite time to ride. There are less cars out than any other time
or day. It’s very peaceful. I once saw a deer on the greenway and was
thankful I was with someone (Nat) who yelled “deer” before I got trampled.

 · There are more and more rides around. Zeke Safdy and Maurice
are organizers of the Charlotte Area Cycling Meet Up group and host rides
all the time. There’s a facebook group for “The Gentlemens Ride” and
“Charlotte Critical Mass”. Of course there are lots of road bike rides
listed on WeeklyRides.com. Jeff Viscount compiles all kinds of events and
rides and has added a social ride category for the Tuesday Night Ride.

 The National Bike Challenge:

 · This challenge ran from May 1st to August 30th.

 · Our team was named “The Charlotte Spokes People”.

 · Our team consisted of James Stewart, Ryan Stachurski, Bill
Fehr, Jon Harding, Ann Groninger, Hernan Atencio, Katherine Whitton, David
 Spranger, Alex.

 · Thank you to everyone who joined the team.

 · Our team was ranked #1 in the Charlotte area and #67
 nationally.

 · Our team logged 12,638 miles. All riders on NC logged 140,476
 miles.

 · I’m sure I’ll do this again this year. Let me know if you want
 to join my team.

 The Long Road Home Project:

In August, I had the good fortune and privilege to meet Casey Miller and
his team of intrepid veteran bike riders who formed “The Long Road Home
Project.” They were from various units of the armed forces. They were a
team of 5 people who rode across the country in 90 days. I had the honor
of meeting them for dinner then riding with 2 of them for 32 miles to
Oakboro. Although it was raining and cold, I could hardly wimp out on Jr.
and Steve. You see, they are not only veterans but paralympians riding
across the country on handcycles. I figured if they could do it, so could
 I. As I struggled to keep up, Steve told me Jr. was one of the leading
handcyclists in his division in the Paralympics so I didn’t feel too bad
for slowing them down. I turned off after 32 miles. They continued on for
about 18 more miles that day.

 Local highlights:

 · Bike Fest on Thomas Avenue in Plaza Midwood was on May12th. It
was the second year of this Open Street event. Thanks to James Stewart,
Angie Courtney, Kelly Sturges, Tobe Holmes, Kevin Kennedy, Nicole Storey
and Leslie Sykes for making this possible.

 · Plaza/Commonwealth pedscape is finally finished. 8? bike
racks, a bike maintenance station, pedestrian crosswalks, sharrows, reverse
 angle parking and new

I will be building up and riding an Atlantis alot this year. That cool
vibe (homeless guy) I've been putting down on the bike trail riding one or
another of my harem of restored 80's MTN bikes is due for a major
makeover. How you like me now?

As Manny advised above, I've started to stop in the middle of my ride to
take in the sights. I might even carry a flask on a cold day and enjoy an
 adult beverage.

I also plan on finding out where that trail that goes under the bypass

getting close to finally getting on my new Riv. My riding plans are to at
first try a commute to work which would be round trip 35 miles, perhaps do
this at least once per week, then ride for fitness two days during my work
week with a longish Saturday ride. I'm planning a light tour with my
Brother and Nephew from Salinas ( Maybe San Francisco) to SLO via Big Sur,
maybe a longer tour in the fall doing a circuit around San Diego county.
And trying to hook up with Southern California Riv riders. Taking delivery
of my new Riv is a great way to start 2013.

I want to ride with more local Riv riders, including the Allingham boyz

I would like to organize at least 2 big rides this Spring:

- Riv Rally East (Late April/Early May, location TBD)

We have infinite room at the Midwest Riv Rally. It's gonna be based in
southern Minnesota, probably around Spring Valley. You all are in for a
treat.

If you need any logistical assistance for the Katy let me know. We live in

[RBW] Re: 2013 Riding Plans anyone?

2013-01-07 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Yep, this last year was the lowest on record for me. Fewest rides and
shortest overall distance in a while. Oh well, all miles are good, all
horizons inspiring.

So, for me, it's just getting out more regularly and reconnecting with ride
buddies I haven't seen in a while. It's been such a shift to full-time VO
work this year that everything was in a bit of a turmoil, schedule-wise.
But, I've learned some tricks with my new work setup, and think I found
some times and places where I can expect to get some miles.

Still have a tangential desire to try an S24O, but that's something I
figure will happen at the appropriate time.
Would love to do at least a Populaire this year, and it would be nice to
have the form for a 200K. But, the SFR Lighthouse Ride on the 26th is a
bit optimistic (though the Populaire is that same day...)
Also plan on signing up for the Gran Fondo, as there needs to be at least
one bike with fenders and realistic tires on that outing.

That ought to give some form to the year.

If anyone does this, Drop me a note and I'll try and get over to pedal at
least a while with you.

September - or Natchez Trace

We have a number of RUSA and organized charity century type events here in
Alabama for those so inclined and there are a few RBWs scattered around as
well. I'd love to ride with any visitors coming though.

My wife was asking me where do you want to go and ride this year? just
the other day and to be honest I really don't know! Maybe another section
of the MS River Trail? I did a 3 day piece solo on the Saluki in '09 and
enjoyed it a lot.

Tailwinds and safe sailing in 2013.

Plan more overnight trips.*

The last four/three years traditionally my buddy Tommy and I would catch
the Tour De California either as an overnight or a day ride. This year

This year the tour is doing a mountain top finish at Diablo on *May 18. *
This for sure will be an overnight at Juniper.

Steep Ravine is good want to do more of this.

bored or to take pictures of interesting things.

With the success of the New Years Ride up Diablo (one of which I didn't
even plan, which may be the reason why it turned out so well) Hoping on
loosely planning some mixed terrain rides that have some sort of sense of
exploration. So far the Sunday rides with the Rivendell crew has been
money and those don't have any routes planned.

Bay Area Rivendell Ride maybe in the fall. When was the last one? This
could be a good annual one.

Ultimate goals*
Meet more people
Explore new places.
Get lost
Maybe take more pictures.

On a non-cycling goal might take up some freelance photography when I get
the courage to build up a portfolio. This group will be the first to know
if this comes into fruition.

Manny

I hope to see you on 1/26. It's my plan to rock the Lighthouse. We can
revisit the gravel grind through SP Taylor! I'll be on the Hilsen this
time, most likely

I also want to be pencilled in for Juniper in May

The other thing I want to share is that I've gotten into the habit of
commemorating each year of cycling like a season. I built a little time
capsule of memories for 2011 and 2012. Stuff that goes in the time capsule
is brevet cards and medals, photos, patches. I also use one cycling cap
and one bandanna for the entire year and put it in the time capsule on Dec
31. I also have a snap-on bracelet that I wear on every long ride, that I
treat as my reminder to ride safe and ride smart and survive to ride
another day. I replace that every Dec 31st as well.

My 2013 cap is a Pace that I bought at Naia gelato shop in Berkeley
My 2013 bandanna is a black Oaklandish one
My 2013 bracelet is red with black skulls on it

I'm going to stock up on future years' bandannas from the recent Riv
additions

[RBW] Re: 2013 Riding Plans anyone?

2013-01-07 Thread RJM
This year I am going to do a week trip on the Katy trail with a friend,
probably in spring.
I am going to ride many of the same local charity rides I rode last year.
Stuff called, Spokes for Strokes, Tour de Corn, Horsey Hundred, Tour de
Shawnee, Tour de Reelfoot, Misaligned Minds, Superman Bike Ride.
Going to do some bike camping at an area about 30 miles away from my
house...s24o style.
Going to do a ton of club riding this year. I actually have some goals to
tackle hills and get faster this year. Not really a plan set out, just
would like to hang with the fast group a little.
Possibly will do RAGBRAI, but don't know about the vacation time.

September - 2 weeks and do the Erie Canal or Natchez Trace or USBR 35 From

October - Hilly Hundred 2 day ride
November - FestiVELO 4 day ride

I'll be at the Lighthouse brevet. I'm planning on volunteering and
checking people in and then riding with the bunch. I'll do it rain or
shine, but shine would be preferred :). I'll be riding my 650b Ram.
Everyone is welcome to give it a spin if interested.

Hoping to make the Riv Rally Midwest this year (although not on a Riv
unless a total midlife crisis hits). Other than that - no real plans.
It's usually harder for me to plan any bike events in the winter.
Spring/summer seems so far off at the moment, especially as I'm just
recovering from a fairly nasty cold bug.

2013-01-06 Thread BSWP
I'm going to do something new in 2013 - a long multi-night ride, my first
tour. I have a riding partner, and we're now working on a route for late
May, either down the coast to the south and back inland, or up through wine
country with a return on the north coast. Either way, heading southerly on
the coast sections. Much as I would like to take the QuickBeam, the hills
will move me to the LongLow with its half-step + granny gearing.
Self-powered the entire way, door-to-door.

Now for the training!

[RBW] Re: 2013 Riding Plans anyone?

2013-01-06 Thread Mike
Kelly, looks like you got a lot of good stuff planned for the coming year.
Last year I was super ambitious with lots of randonneruing related
plans--R-12, SR series, 1200k, Fleche--and multiple 3 day bike camping
trips. Things didn't pan out as planned. I did 200k, 300k and 600k brevets.
No R-12, only two 200k perms, and only two overnight camping trips that
were tons of fun but left me wanting more. I did manage to ride and finish
the Cascade 1200k which was pretty neat but I don't know, not quite as much
fun, or even as difficult as I anticipated. The weather was horrible for
the event. A combination of unexpectedly adopting a puppy and a loss of
motivation curbed my grandiosity. But I did have a lot of fun urban rides
explores roads and stretching the legs on roads closer to home during our
glorious summer that we had this year here in Portland.

For 2013 things are pretty toned down. I'll definitely do 200k and 300k
brevets although I won't be bike touring this summer. There's some things
going on later this year that just trump cycling. I may try and get out for
a winter camping trip in Feb or Mar but even that is gonna be hard. I think
for the most part I'll be making do with shorter rambles in the 4hr/max
range that include Forest Park and the West Hills.

After 5yrs of big mileage it's probably good to tone it down for a year.
I've been cycling now for 20yrs and hoping to cycle for another 30 to 40
more. With less time on the bike I'm looking forward to being less tired
and staying up later reading.

Happy New Year to everyone on the list. Looking forward to following your
adventures as you post about them here. Which reminds me. One other plan
for this year is to get together with the PDX Riv enthusiast crew from the
New Year's Day ride and doing more riding.

I hope to keep commuting by bike and do a couple metric centuries, the

Maybe an English Century if I get the gumption.

Maybe this year I will look into learning how to do touring like Jim just

[RBW] Re: 2013 Riding Plans anyone?

2013-01-06 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
I second the thing Mike said above about getting out and riding with the
PDX area Riv folks. The crew that showed up for New Years Day
ridehttp://www.flickr.com/photos/15966859@N07/8335963977/was excellent, but I
know there are more in the area. I hope to meet
them/you.

I've been eyeing the OR Randonneurs calendar and debating if I want to
brave a 200k. I think I do. The rando season kicks off in March with a
100k. I'll be there and will decide if I want to commit to a 200k then.

A couple buddies and I have been talking about doing a tour of Eastern
Oregon. Perhaps explore part of the Old West Scenic
Bikewayhttp://youtu.be/ZSVYwzk9q78
.

Plans are already underway for the 2nd annual Kidical Mass PDX Family Bike
Camping Trip... Leave the Minivan at Home. http://youtu.be/cQEX-sfWeXk

The wife and I have been talking about the possibility of a bike tour out
to the coast with the kids. The logistics of that kind of trip with a 4 and
6 year old on board are a little intimidating, but the possibility of
family fun and adventure seems pretty high as well. The jury's still out.

I've got several day trip and overnight type destinations on my radar too
but those will largely be last minute type trips... not really stuff that
needs advanced planning.

All of this is basically a means to the same end... to go neat places with
cool people.
