Re: [RBW] Re: 26 Tire Suggestions?
I have the Kojacks 26x2.0 on my Atlantis and they are actually 44mm wide on 22.5mm rims. I have the Compass 26x1.75 on an XO-3 and they measure 43mm on 20mm rims. The Compass tires feel noticeably faster to me but it might be the bike not the tires. Maybe the X0-3 planes? Both bikes have drops but the XO-3 is a bit sportier geometry and build overall. -Dave J On Sunday, April 13, 2014 9:36:21 AM UTC-4, Michael Ullmer wrote: Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Michael, Congratulations on finding a Valley Runner! I have one too set up with albatross bars and Big Bens. I love riding it. Here's a photo with Big Bens mounted - sorry its not a close up. https://flic.kr/p/j747TN My vote is for the Big Bens. They are 2.15 but a really great tire; good on the road and great on gravel/fire trails and not insane single track (haven't done much of that though, to be honest). I haven't tried putting fenders on there yet, but it looks like there is plenty of room still. I haven't tried other tires so can't comment on the offerings from Compass or Schwalbe. Re: [RBW] Re: 26 Tire Suggestions?
I love the Compass tires on my other bikes, but I haven't tried the 26 x 1.75 ones. I wish they were 2 or bigger. For now, I really like the ride of these cheap tires on my Schwinn KOM, ITS DJ Mk2, only $18 a tirehttp://www.jensonusa.com/Tires-and-Tubes/Intense-Tires-Micro-Knobby-26-DJ-Tire. They're fluffy and have a nice, micro-knob tread. Pretty light and fast, good on hard dirt, gravel, and road. But, they have no puncture protection. I've had no punctures yet in commuting, but maybe I'm lucky. No thorns around here, just broken glass in the gutters. Re: [RBW] Re: 26 Tire Suggestions?
I love Schwalbes, but they're pricey. If you like slicks, Kojaks are awesome. I have em and really like em... I do miss having some bit of tread (like the Big Apples). My favorite cheapo tire is the Grand Tycoon brick tread (they run closer to 2.2 in), but they're supple, grippy, they last, and THEY'RE CHEAP!!! And they come in a variety of colors. Duro also makes a clone of the Grand Tycoon (which incidentally itself is a clone of the Schwinn Westwind brick tread tire from the Typhoon era)... Keeping that Schwinn golden era spirit alive... gotta love it. BB On Friday, April 11, 2014 9:45:30 AM UTC-4, AaronY wrote: Michael, Congratulations on finding a Valley Runner! [RBW] Re: 26 Tire Suggestions?
I've had good results on 26 with both Compass 1.75 and Big Ben 2.15. The Compass is speedy and nimble, while still good for mixed-terrain use; the Big Ben takes a little longer to get up to speed, but rolls over the damnedest things without complaint. I run the Compass on a Surly Trucker DeLuxe that gets a lot of road use, and the Big Bens on an elderly GT Karakoram that spends the Winter as an ice bike and spends the rest of the year as a balloon bike (this reminds me it's time to change the tires on that one). Both tires are great fun, in different ways. rod On Wednesday, April 9, 2014 1:21:22 AM UTC-4, Michael Ullmer wrote: Hi all, I just acquired a Koga Miyata Valley Runner frame that I've got to outfit with some new wheels and tires.
